"Study lines, draw lots of lines, either from memory or nature, and you will become a good artist." Advice given by Ingres to Degas) As an artist Edgar Hilaire Germain de Gas is unique and refreshing in that he can not be totally categorised into any of the various trends of his era. Placing too much emphasis on line and draftmanship to be considered an impressionist, moving away from traditional patterns, to develop a style of his own makes it possible to call him a classicist only for a short time early in his career. Similarly he stands apart from the Romantisists, Realists and Neo-Impressionists to be in a category of his own. His reputation as a loner in terms of his art style was mirrored somewhat in his social life, although he had a few close friends such as Manet, Renoir, Gaugin and Monet he was a lonely man remained unmarried and was never known to have had any love affairs. Degas was born July 19, 1834 to a wealthy Parisian family. His father Auguste moved from Naples to Paris and changed the family name from Degas to de Gas to make it appear he came from a noble French background. Degas' schoolboy dreams where of becoming an artist, and he was greatly influenced by his lifelong admiration of Ingres plus many visits to the Louvre and Italy to view the work of the great masters. In his last years fading eyesight saw him painting less and turning more to sculpture and modelling.

Artists Edgar Germain Hilaire Degas Born 1834, Died 1917
Painter, Photographer, Draftsman
French
“No art was ever less spontaneous than mine. What I do is the result of reflection and study of the great masters; of inspiration, spontaneity, temperament . . . I know nothing,” claimed Edgar Degas. From a wealthy Parisian family, Degas devoted himself exclusively to painting without needing to sell a canvas. His training was conventional: he spent five years in Italy, studied the Old Masters in the Louvre, and trained under one of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres’ students at the École des Beaux-Arts. Fellow Impressionist Berthe Morisot remembered him saying that the study of nature was meaningless, since the art of painting was a question of conventions, and that it was by far the best thing to learn drawing from Hans Holbein. By the mid-1860s Degas was turning to modern themes, particularly contemporary Parisian life. Unlike other Impressionists, he emphasized composition and drawing, and he usually did not paint outdoors. Degas was primarily concerned with depicting movement, from horses to women in various guises—dressing, bathing, and as cabaret performers. He painted the first of his ballet dancers around 1873. Almost blind for his last twenty years, Degas worked mostly in pastel with increasingly broad, free handling. He also made wax sculptures that were posthumously cast in bronze. Degas, Edgar
Degas, (Hilaire-Germain-) Edgar (b. July 19, 1834, Paris, Fr.d. Sept. 27, 1917, Paris) French artist, acknowledged as the master of drawing the human figure in motion. Degas worked in many mediums, preferring pastel to all others. He is perhaps best known for his paintings, drawings, and bronzes of ballerinas and of race horses.
Encyclopaedia Britannica
The art of Hilaire Germain Edgar Degas , b. Paris, July 19, 1834, d. Sept. 26, 1917, reflects a concern for the psychology of movement and expression and the harmony of line and continuity of contour. These characteristics set Degas apart from the other impressionist painters, although he took part in all but one of the 8 impressionist exhibitions between 1874 and 1886. Degas was the son of a wealthy banker, and his aristocratic family background instilled into his early art a haughty yet sensitive quality of detachment. As he grew up, his idol was the painter Jean Auguste Ingres , whose example pointed him in the direction of a classical draftsmanship, stressing balance and clarity of outline. After beginning his artistic studies with Louis Lamothes, a pupil of Ingres, he started classes at the Ecole des Beaux Arts but left in 1854 and went to Italy. He stayed there for 5 years, studying Italian art, especially Renaissance works.

1885-88 (100 Kb); Pastel on panel, 11 7/8 x 16 in; Philadelphia Museum of Art R ACE HORSES AND JOCKEYS , even more than dancers, occupied Degas throughout his long career as an artist. Paul-Andre Lemoisne catalogued some ninety-one works in this category, spanning the period from 1860 to 1900a number that did not include Degas's equestrian waxes and bronzesand they embrace a range of sizes and mediums. As with the Paris Opera, the spectacle of the turf gave Degas the base material from which to forge images of modern life in an alloy that fused references to the art of the past with details observed from life and scrupulously documented. But more than any other of his subjects, this was a genre that fed upon itself and spawned countless variations and adjustments. From a repertory established very early, Degas proceeded to select individual jockeys and rearrange them, to repeat poses and refine them, until this hermetic world lost all connection with the reality of the race track... This diminutive composition of Race Horses , which falls toward the end of the first phase in this development, is immediately distinguished by its unusual support. It is pastel, and not oil, on panel: the wood here, possibly light mahogany, is the kind that might be used for cigar boxes. Although pastel on panel is not a unique combination, it is extremely rare in Degas's oeuvre, and testifies to his continuing pleasure in experimenting with techniques and supports.

Gradually, Degas turned away from the medium of oil painting, perhaps because of his failing eyesight. He produced more freely executed, glowing pastels and charcoal drawings. His works in sculpture include many notable studies of dancers and horses. A number of his paintings and sculptures may be seen in the Metropolitan Museum. Many of his most celebrated works, including Absinthe, The Rehearsal, and Two Laundresses (1882) are in the Louvre. Ranked among the greatest of French artists, Degas profoundly influenced such later artists as Toulouse-Lautrec and Picasso. Degas. The Complete Etchings, Lithographs, and Monotypes
