    Giorgio de Chirico
(Redirected from Giorgio Chirico Giorgio de Chirico ) was an Italian painter born in Greece , and with Carlo Carra founded the scuola metafisica art movement. He studied art in Munich at the Academy of Fine Arts , where he read the writings of the philosophers Nietzsche and Arthur Schopenhauer and studied the works of Boecklin and Max Klinger De Chirico is best known for the paintings he produced between 1909 and 1919, his Metaphysical period, which are memorable for the haunted, brooding moods evoked by their images. At the start of this period, his subjects were still cityscapes inspired by the bright daylight of Mediterranean cities, but gradually he turned his attention to studies of cluttered storerooms, sometimes inhabited by mannequins. He won praise for his work almost immediately from the writer Guillaume Apollinaire , who helped to introduce his work to the later Surrealists Yves Tanguy wrote how one day in 1922 he saw one of de Chirico's paintings in an art dealer's window, and was so impressed by it he resolved on the spot to become an artist although he had never even held a brush! Other artists who acknowledged de Chirico's influence include Max Ernst Salvador Dalí , and René Magritte De Chirico also published a novel in Hebdomeros, the Metaphysician.

Giorgio de Chirico and the Myth of Ariadne
November 3, 2002 - January 5, 2003 The enigmatic paintings of Giorgio de Chirico (1888-1978), with their dream-like imagery of deserted city squares, filled with mysterious shadows, stopped clocks, and sleeping statues, had a profound influence on Modern Art. These "Metaphysical" works began around 1912, with a series of 8 Ariadne paintings in which the artist depicted a reclining statue of the Princess of Greek mythology in an empty, sun-drenched piazza. According to the legend, Ariadne was abandoned by her lover, Theseus, on the desert island of Naxos, after he had slayed the Minotaur with the aid of her thread, which had helped him to navigate the labyrinth. The melancholy subject appealed to the artist, who had a nostalgic interest in the classical past. A symbol of exile and loss, the anguished figure of the sleeping Ariadne haunted de Chirico's imagination during his early years in Paris, a time of intense loneliness for the artist. The mystery and melancholy found in these pictures, completed between the Spring of 1912 and the Autumn of 1913, resonates in the artist's work throughout his long career.

DE CHIRICO, GIORGIO. Monsieur Dudron. Autobiographischer Roman. Beitr. von Jole de Sanna, Johannes Gachnang u.a.
