David, Jacques-Louis E E Pronunciation Key David, Jacques-Louis David studied with Vien , and after winning the Prix de Rome (which had been refused him four times, causing him to attempt suicide by starvation) he accompanied Vien to Italy in 1775. His pursuit of the antique, nurtured by his time in Rome, directed the classical revival in French art. He borrowed classical forms and motifs, predominantly from sculpture, to illustrate a sense of virtue he mistakenly attributed to the ancient Romans. Consumed by a desire for perfection and by a passion for the political ideals of the French Revolution, David imposed a fierce discipline on the expression of sentiment in his work. This inhibition resulted in a distinct coldness and rationalism of approach. David's reputation was made by the Salon of 1784. In that year he produced his first masterwork, The Oath of the Horatii (Louvre). This work and his celebrated Death of Socrates (1787; Metropolitan Mus.) as well as Lictors Bringing to Brutus the Bodies of His Sons Marat (1793; Brussels), his iron control is softened and the tragic portraits are moving and dignified. The artist was imprisoned for a time at the end of the Reign of Terror.

David was the virtual art dictator of France for a generation. Extending beyond painting, his influence determined the course of fashion, furniture design, and interior decoration and was reflected in the development of moral philosophy. His art was a sudden and decisive break with tradition, and from this break modern art is dated. David studied with Vien, and after winning the Prix de Rome (which had been refused him four times, causing him to attempt suicide by starvation) he accompanied Vien to Italy in 1775. His pursuit of the antique, nurtured by his time in Rome, directed the classical revival in French art. In that year he produced his first masterwork, The Oath of the Horatii (Louvre). This work and his celebrated Death of Socrates (1787; Metropolitan Mus.) as well as Lictors Bringing to Brutus the Bodies of His Sons (1789; Louvre) were themes appropriate to the political climate of the time. They secured for David vast popularity and success. David was admitted to the Acad©mie royale in 1780 and worked as court painter to the king.

    Jacques-Louis David
    In 1766-1774 David studied at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, in Vein's class. The goal of practically every Academy student was to win the premier student prize: the Grand Prix, or Prix de Rome. David took part in the competition every year starting from 1770, until at last in 1774 he finally won it with Antiochus and Stratonice . After that he spent 5 years in Italy (1775-1780), where drew from antique models. On his return to Paris in 1780, Ancient history and mythology became his favorite subject. In 1781 David was made an Associate member of the Academy for his work Belisarius , which was much admired, and two years later, in 1783, he became a full Academician for Andromache Mourning Hector . In 1784, he fulfilled Louis XVI’s commission - The Oath of the Horatii The Intervention of the Sabine Women In 1797 he met Napoleon and was granted a single portrait sitting, during which David did not manage to paint much, but was absolutely captivated by Napoleon's personality. Later on David created many paintings devoted to his new hero and his relatives: Bonaparte Crossing the St. Bernard Pass

    Jacques Louis David es el fundador del Neoclasicismo francés . Nació en París en 1748, iniciándose en la pintura a temprana edad. Se formó en el taller de Vien, pasando después a la Academia de París (1766), obteniendo como premio una pensión para trasladarse a Roma. Allí descubrió la Antigüedad clásica, interesándose por la pintura idealista de los Carracci durante su breve estancia en Bolonia. En Roma también se interesaría por Rafael y Poussin . En la Ciudad Eterna será captado por los teóricos del Neoclasicismo, Winckelmann y Mengs especialmente. Años después realizaría un segundo viaje a Roma, estancia que duró cinco años, adoptando una técnica tenebrista aprendida de Caravaggio . Simultanea grandes composiciones históricas con retratos para ganarse la vida. De regreso a París, se vio inmerso en la Revolución Francesa, participando activamente y ocupando importantes cargos, hasta convertirse en el pintor oficial de la Revolución. Su amistad con Robespierre le llevará a la cárcel, siendo liberado en 1795 para convertirse en el retratista oficial de Napoleón, preocupándose por la captación psicológica de los modelos. Su escuela se convirtió en la más famosa de Europa, recibiendo jóvenes de diversos países, entre los que destacan los españoles José de Madrazo y Juan Antonio Ribera , estandartes del Neoclasicismo español . David rechazó importantes cargos para realizar grandes composiciones cargadas de significado ideológico, realizadas con un delicado dibujo y un cromatismo cálido y variado. En 1814 fue desterrado, tras la caída de Napoleón, retirándose a Bruselas y dedicándose especialmente al desnudo, obras que anuncian las que realizará su discípulo

    From the outset, David was in active sympathy with the Revolution, and =his majestic historical paintings (especially the Oath of the Horatii, Death of Socrates, and Brutus's Sons) were universally hailed as artistic demands for political action. He orchestrated the great festival of the people, 14 July 1790, and designed uniforms, banners, triumphal arches, and inspirational props for the Jacobin club's propaganda. He was elected a Deputy from the city of Paris, and voted for the execution of Louis XVI. He was active in numerous agencies of the reign of terror, and historians have identified more than 300 victims for whom David signed execution orders. He was president of the Jacobin club on the day when his good friend and fellow Jacobin, Jean-Paul Marat, was killed. Marat, friend of Robespierre, Jacobin deputy to the Convention, and editor-in-chief of L'Ami du Peuple, was a fiery orator; he was also a violent man, quick to take offense. Some saw him as an intransigent patriot; for others he was merely a hateful demagogue On July 13, 1793, a young Royalist from Caen, Charlotte Corday, managed, by a clever subterfuge, to gain entry into his apartment. When Marat agreed to receive her, she stabbed him in his bathtub, where he was accustomed to sit hour after hour treating the disfiguring skin disease from which he suffered. David, Marat's colleague in the Convention, had visited him only the day before the murder, and he recalled the setting of the room vividlly, the tub, the sheet, the green rug, the wooden packing case, and above all, the pen of the journalist. He saw in Marat a model of antique "virtue." The day after the murder, David was invited by the Convention to make arrangements for the funeral ceremony, and to paint Marat's portrait. He accepted with enthusiasm, but the decomposed state of the body made a true-to-life representation of the victim impossible. This circumstance, coupled with David's own emotional state, resulted in the creation of this idealized image.

    Jacques-Louis David Deputado à Convenção durante a Revolução francesa, regicida por ter votado a morte do rei de França Luís XVI, pintor histórico, principal expoente da reacção neo-clássica contra o estilo rococo, foi um dos raros grandes artistas franceses da época. Nasceu em Paris, em 30 de Agosto de 1748;
    morreu em Bruxelas em 29 de Dezembro de 1825. David nasceu no ano em que novas escavações das ruínas de Pompeia e de Herculaneum começavam a encorajar um regresso ao estilo da Antiguidade greco-romana. O pai era um abastado comerciante têxtil, que morreu num duelo em 1757, fazendo com que o jovem David fosse educado por dois tios maternos. Depois de ter realizado os estudos literários e um curso de desenho foi colocado no estúdio do pintor histórico Joseph-Marie Vien, o mais célebre pintor de história e professor do seu tempo, e que pintava de acordo com o novo gosto pelas coisas greco-romanas, sem abandonar completamente o erotismo e o sentimentalismo em moda no princípio do século XVIII. Aos 18 anos David entrou para a Academia Real de Pintura e Escultura, de França, mas os primeiros tempos de estudo não correram bem, o que o levou a tentar o suicídio à maneira estóica, pela fome. Finalmente, em 1774 ganhou o Prémio de Roma, uma bolsa que não só lhe possibilitava uma estadia em Itália, mas também lhe assegurava futuras encomendas de trabalhos. O quadro premiado «Antíoco e Estratonice» mostra que ainda estava influenciado pela pintura rococo de François Boucher. Foi para Itália no ano seguinte, acompanhado por Vien, tendo sido influenciado pelas principais escolas italianas, a de Caravaggio, a de Nicolas Poussin e a seiscentista de Bolonha. Mas o mais importante foi a sua visita às ruínas de Herculaneum, às colecções de antiguidades de Pompeia existentes em Nápoles, e aos templos dóricos de Paestum. Frente às colunas e aos vasos antigos sentiu-se «como se tivesse sido operado a uma catarata nos olhos».
