Richard Dadd (1817-1886)
Best known for his fairy pictures and the sad circumstances of his life, the artist Richard Dadd grew up in Chatham on the Medway, going to school at Rochester ( on these pages for its artistic interest ). Many of his family were involved with shipbuilding, and Dadd's early interests were ships and sketching the landscape around where he lived - Rochester Castle appears in the background of some of his pictures. He studied at the Royal Academy, where he came under the influence of painters such as Etty Maclise Mulready and Henry Howard, and began to paint fairy subjects from Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' and 'The Tempest', as well as increasingly his own subjects. He was also a member of the group of artists known as the Clique. In 1842, Dadd went on a 10 month trip with a wealthy lawyer, Sir Thomas Phillips, to draw his journey as he travelled through Europe and the Near and Middle East, and while on this trip he began to suffer headaches and delusions. Eventually, feeling himself to be under the command of the Egyptian god Osiris, he returned to England, murdered his father, and escaped to France, before being captured and sent to the London lunatic asylum of Bethlem Hospital in 1844. He was kept there for 20 years before being transferred to Broadmoor Asylum in Berkshire, where he was to live out the remainder of his life. Dadd's most important pictures were The Fairy Feller's Masterstroke and Contradiction, Oberon and Titania

    British
The fourth of eleven children of a chemist and druggist, Richard Dadd began his artistic training at the age of thirteen. He studied miniature painting, portraiture, and landscapes and was accepted to the prestigious Royal Academy for further study after turning twenty. Academy professors remarked on his gentleness, cheerful good nature, and great promise as an artist. Dadd's Neoclassical paintings of ancient subjects, theatrical in concept, followed in the tradition of Lawrence Alma Tadema. He painted scaled-down human figures in small, luminous landscapes of carefully rendered plants and flowers. In 1842 Dadd left England on a one-year drawing trip throughout Europe and the Middle East. Shortly after his return, he lost his sanity, as had three of his siblings. Dadd murdered his father, attempted to kill a stranger, and spoke of killing the pope and the emperor of Austria, insisting that the Egyptian god Osiris requested these acts. In 1843 the courts and his family committed him to an insane asylum, where he remained for the next forty-three years, continuing to paint. Send us your e-mail and get informed

The painter Richard Dadd (1817-1886) is chiefly remembered for the two extraordinarily-detailed masterpieces he painted during his incarceration in Bethlem Hospital: Contradiction. Oberon and Titania (1854-8), and ca. Beginning in 1853, Dadd painted a series of about thirty watercolours under the collective title Sketches to Illustrate the Passions , each one focussing on a single virtue, vice, or state-of-mind. Subjects for the sketches included love, hatred , jealousy, treachery, idleness, brutality, raving madness , and melancholy (pictured above). The quality of these compositions varies widely: some seem weirdly stilted, others are straightforwardly naturalistic. Of the oil-paintings from this period, Potrait of a Man Among the independent watercolours Dadd executed during his Bethlem years, his Sketch of an idea for Crazy Jane The year 1860 saw Dadd complete two more minor masterpieces in oils: Negation (for which, alas, I could not find a good-quality colour image), and Mother and Child madonna Bacchanalian Scene . This could almost be a detail from Each man then has his own unlucky fate both here and beyond - like must be added to like, and ones due paid to the appointed spirit.
