Autumn Landscape
oil on canvas
DESCRIPTION
This painting could be considered more impressionistic than realistic in its use of soft edges and rich color, rather than line, to define shapes. Cropsey uses short brushstrokes and splotches of paint to create the details of this rural scene. His color palette ranges from vibrant greens of the grass and reds of the foliage, to paler, pearly hues of golds and browns in the sky and trees. The painting's sun-dappled light effects create a very warm setting. A calm body of water sits in the middleground; a couple stands by the water's edge - appearing very tiny on the canvas as they lend a sense of scale to the painting. Two cattle rest under a tree, closer to the foreground. Their central location on the canvas, as well as their leading gaze invite spectators into the autumn scene. The foreground is busy with trees, foliage, and ground cover, done mostly in shades of brown, but contrasted with paler hues representing reflected light. The sky is not a single color, but a smooth gradient of whites and pale color. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
Cropsey was a second generation member of the Hudson River School and a follower of Thomas Cole. As the father of the Hudson River School, Cole's artistic aims were towards an "intellectual and emotional stimulation and moral instruction," as seen through the illustration of the vast early American landscape (Talbot 14). "Nature was seen as a symbol of creation and a divine past. It was this natural past, rather than one of human history, which was thought unique to America. Even more importantly, wilderness not only implied a natural past and provided a moral lesson for the present, it also represented the undeveloped future of the nation, America's manifest destiny" (Talbot 15).

Biography
Provenance Exhibitions Literature ... Large Image ln its glorification of the American autumn and in its overall luminist qualities, Lake Wawayanda is a quintessential example of Jasper Cropsey's mature style. The measured horizontal space, smooth facture, delicate tonalities, and cool, glowing light evoke the silence and tranquility characteristic of luminist landscapes.
Lake Wawayanda ("Lake of the Winding Water") is actually part of Greenwood Lake, which straddles the New York-New Jersey border, approximately halfway between the New York cities of Hastings-on-Hudson and Port Jervis. Cropsey began his artistic association with these connected lakes in 1843, and continued to visit the area often; in 1869 he built a house and settled there until 1885. His house and its natural environs became a sustained and peaceful retreat from the market and exhibition pressures of New York City, where he spent the winters. The area held profound associations for him, and he painted Lake Greenwood/Wawayanda at least thirteen times.
The sense of serenity and contentment so evident in Oberlin's Lake Wawayanda may reflect positive events occurring in Cropsey's life during 1876. Not only did he exhibit three paintings at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia that year, but he was alsoin his capacity as architectchosen to design the stairways, waiting rooms, and platforms for the Sixth Avenue Elevated in New York City.

He began his career as an architect, but began his career as an architect, but began painting shortly after. In 1842 Cropsey had begun to do landscape studies from nature. A two-week trip to New Jersey produced two different paintings of Greenwood. While in Greenwood, Jasper met Maria Cooley, and they were married in May of 1947.

Jasper Francis Cropsey Student Activity What is Real? What is True?
Dawn of Morning, LakeGeorge
Jasper Frances Cropsey sketched during the summer and painted in his studio during the winter. His later work showed autumn scenes with vivid colors. When Cropsey brought his artwork to England, the British did not know about the brilliant colors of the Northeastern United States leaves. They said that Cropsey did not paint true nature. To prove the colors were real, Cropsey hung some brightly colored autumn leaves next to his paintings. This way, he was able to show the British that his vivid leaf colors were not imaginary. Look at Cropsey’s painting of Lake George. Compare it with his Autumn on the Hudson River Do you believe that Jasper F. Cropsey was showing real nature in these paintings? Why? How did Cropsey answer accusations that he was "being untrue to nature"? Do you think that was a good way to respond? What do you feel when you look at this painting? What part of it "catches" your eyes? Have you ever seen nature that looks like these paintings?

A biography and accompanying painting from BYU's Museum of Art.

Jasper Francis Cropsey Sunset, Hudson River (Near Hastings-on-Hudson), 1897 Oil on canvas, 12 x 20 in. Gift of Dr. Robert W. Metcalf Growing up in Staten Island, New York, Jasper Cropsey moved to New York City in 1837 at the age of fourteen, where he was first apprenticed to an architectural firm. Six years later he devoted himself to painting and, possibly as early as 1845, began depicting the autumn season for which he became known. In 1847 Cropsey made the obligatory tour of Europe, but it was during his second, extended trip to London in 1856 that he fully developed his autumn oeuvre. Hailed as having "no superior as a painter of autumnal scenes," Cropsey won great acclaim in England for his monumental Autumn on the Hudson River of 1860 (Metropolitan Museum of Art). It may have been his English experience that cemented the autumn motif in his work. The nature-loving English, whose autumn seasons lacked the vibrant colors found in America's deciduous trees, were fascinated with the visual delights peculiar to American autumns, where the "forest surpasses all the world in gorgeousness." The British reaction to Cropsey's brilliant hues was often one of incredulity, causing the artist to display preserved autumn leaves pasted on cardboard next to his paintings.

Jasper Francis Cropsey (1823 – 1900)
Jasper Cropsey was born on his father’s farm in Rossville, Staten Island on February 18, 1823. As a young boy, Cropsey had recurring periods of poor health. During these periods, while absent from school, Cropsey taught himself to draw. His early drawings were architectural sketches and landscapes drawn on notepads and in the margins of his schoolbooks.
Cropsey Farm, Staten Island His artistic skills improved rapidly as Jasper mimicked whatever paintings, drawings, and architectural renderings he could find. At the age of fourteen, Cropsey entered an architectural model in a contest and won a diploma from the 1837 Mechanics Institute of New York fair. Soon Jasper Cropsey began a five-year apprenticeship for Joseph Trench, architect. Trench realized young Jasper’s artistic ability and provided him with studio space and art supplies in order to develop his artistic skills. Jasper took advantage of Trench’s encouragement and sketched and painted whenever he could. Cropsey mostly painted landscapes, copied from engravings of Claude Lorrain and other landscape artists. Cropsey received his early training as an architect and set up his own office in 1843. He began painting shortly thereafter and first exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1844. A year later he was elected an associate member and, in 1851, a full member. Cropsey's interest in architecture continued throughout his life and was a strong influence in his painting, most evident in his precise arrangement and outline of forms. But Cropsey was best known for his lavish use of color and, as a first-generation member from the Hudson River School, painted autumn landscapes that startled viewers with their boldness and brilliance. He traveled in Europe from 1847 to 1849 and lived in En gland from 1856 to 1863. Surviving sketchbooks indicate that Cropsey was in the White Mountains in the summer of 1852 and in 1856. He may have made another visit to the area in 1878. His sketches from nature done on these trips are often marked with color notes as well as the subject or location. Cropsey became interested in Luminism after the Civil War and also in watercolor painting. He founded the American Society of Painters in Water Colors in 1867. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Boston Athenaeum, and at the Royal Academy in London. His work has been preserved by the New York Historical Society, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and the Peabody Institute.
