Studies: An early painted study for the composition is in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge from the collection of Charles Ricketts and Charles Shannon where it was attributed to Frederic Lord Leighton. Provenance: Commissioned by Miss Monk, Rome 1872
Mrs Irene Wilberforce
Commentary by Hilary Morgan
The ' Death of the Year ' was painted by Crane at the end of 1872 in Rome, where the twenty-seven year old artist was enjoying an extended honeymoon. It was his most complex and ambitious imaginative work up to that date, and its qualities stem from the intensity of his first experience of Italian life and art. The artist himself described the picture: The Death of the Year was also one of the subjects painted in Rome the months following the bier of the dead year; Time as a priest reading from a service book, and love swinging a censer, being no doubt reminiscent of what one may have seen in some Roman Church (Crane, 1898). The subject derives from Shelley's Dirge for the Year , written in 1821 and published posthumously. Crane's chief inspiration was the fourth and final stanza.

Walter Crane, RWS 1845-1915: An Overview
Biography
Crane was a prolific illustrator of children's books and a painter, decorative designer and theorist on art and on society . He was a central figure in the aesthetic and the Arts and Crafts movements. In 1859 the young Crane was apprenticed to the wood engraver W. J. Linton as a-draughtsman and from 1863 began designing the Toy Books for Routledge that would do so much to improve the standard of Victorian children's book design. Japanese prints were a formative influence on Crane's bold book illustrations. Crane also began to work as a watercolour painter of poetic and romantic subjects. With two exceptions his work was consistently rejected by the Royal Academy so he joined a coterie of like-minded artists exhibiting at the Dudley Gallery. They were united in their admiration for Burne-Jones and the critics dubbed them the 'poetry-without grammar-school'. In the 1870s Crane began to paint in tempera and in oil and exhibited regularly at the Grosvenor Gallery and later at the New Gallery. The ' Renaissance of Venus ', shown at the first exhibition of the Grosvenor Gallery in 1877, was bought by the painter

Bernard Quaritch Ltd.
CRANE, Walter. Kunst en samemleving ... Amsterdam, Scheltema en Holkema, 1903. Square 8vo., pp. xiii, [3], 171, [1]; uncut, with woodcut headpieces throughout; original publisher's decorative wrappers, extremities a little chipped and rubbed; near contemporary inscription on front free endpaper. First Dutch translation of Walter Crane's The Claims of Decorative Art, first published in 1892. 'According to Crane, art evolved in a harmonious society from the most fundamental manifestations, such as folk art, to the most refined. However the links between arts and society had been severed, so that this natural development could not take place. There were two ways of healing the breach: one was to create a better, Socialist society through political action. In such a society, good art would emerge again in and of itself. The other possibility lay in the hands of the artist: he could contribute to the realization of the new society by creating the image of future beauty' (Kaplan). The covers of both the bound and this simply stitched edition were designed by G.W. Dijsselhof: its elegant presentation served as the model for Nieuwe Kunst. Thick handmade paper was used to underscore the authors' anti-industrial theme, and Dijsselhof's woodcut vignettes, combining design with folk art, portrayed fauna prevalent in the Dutch countryside.
