Curtains had been used in portraits since the Renaissance, both for decorative purposes and to suggest interior spaces adjoining the sitter's space, and English painters of the generation of Thomas Hudson (1701-1779) employed them regularly; but they became nearly ubiquitous in Copley's portraits during the 1760s, joining an array of other materials. He typically placed a curtain on one side of the background or the other in his pictures of both men and women and often included either a draped table or an upholstered chair - all in addition to the fabrics of the rich, complex costumes in which his sitters were dressed. Here as in other details Copley missed the mark in terms of contemporary British usage, for by the 1760s Reynolds, Gainsborough , Allan Ramsay, and the like had long since given up such extensive display of fabrics. Copley's reliance on fabrics was made possible by the settings he utilized, which most often represented either interiors or ambiguous porchlike areas, while the British painters by this time had moved their sitters largely to the out-of-doors.

John Singleton Copley is considered to be the foremost artist of colonial America. He is also one of its most prolific. Copley was born on July 3, 1738, in Boston, and was trained by his stepfather, a mezzotint engraver. Copley's early work shows the influence of the Boston painter John Smibert and of English rococo portraitists. From the latter he learned the device of the portrait d'apparat, in which artifacts used by the subject are included in the portrait, as in Paul Revere (1768?, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston), an intense likeness of the patriot-silversmith holding one of his silver teapots. By 1760 Copley's distinctive style had crystallized, characterized by meticulous technique, clear verisimilitude, and a vivid, balanced palette. His sitters included famous politicians (John Hancock, 1765, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston) and wealthy New Englanders (Mrs. Sylvanus Bourne, 1766, Metropolitan Museum, New York City).

Along with his friend and some-time rival L Benjamin West, John Singleton Copley was the first native-born American painter to achieve fame at home and abroad. Born on Boston's Long Wharf, Copley was instructed in art by his stepfather Peter Pelham, a mezzotint engraver and portrait painter. Copley also learned from the paintings of Joseph Blackburn and Robert Feke, but he was, to an extraordinary degree, self-taught. Like West, Copley aspired from the start to be a history painter, but was forced to find his principal livelihood in portraits. Copley's likenesses perfected a style that gave special attention to technical dexterity in surfaces-the sparkling sheen of fabric and the detailed reflections of polished furniture, rendered with strong chiaroscuro-yet still probed the inner personalities of the prosperous sitters who commissioned them. Emboldened by the favorable reception in England of Boy with a Squirrel private collection) and by the encouraging words of West, Copley sailed on June 10, 1774

The Art Institute Purchase Fund, 1947.28 Despite the great influence of European styles, American art has expressed since the founding of the colonies indigenous sensibilities and materials. Largely self-taught, Bostonian John Singleton Copley often relied, like English artists, on European prints for compositional models. In fact, the pose, gown, drapery, and billowing cloud in the background of Mrs. Daniel Hubbard were inspired by a mezzotint portrait of an English noblewoman. Achieving a balance between honesty and sophistication, Copley created convincing images of 18th-century Americans that continue to move us through their incisive characterization and vigorous execution. John Singleton Copley
Portrait of Copley by Gilbert Stuart John Singleton Copley July 3 September 9 ) was an American artist of the colonial period, famous for his portraits of important figures in colonial New England . Born in Boston, Massachusetts , his portraits were innovative in that they tended to portray their subjects with artifacts that were indicative of their lives. In , Copley travelled to England to continue painting there. His new works focused mainly on historical themes, and are sometimes dismissed by critics as lacking the vibrancy of his earlier portraits. He died in London in 1815.

14. Artist Biography: John Singleton Copley
John Singleton Copley. return to Artists List. John Singleton Copley (1738–1815)is an artist with few peers in the history of eighteenth century American art.
http://www.kgny.com/biographies/johnsingletoncopley.html
John Singleton Copley
In America at this time, there were, of course, limners, printmakers, wood carvers, japanners, and others engaged in various forms of artistic work. John Smibert and John Greenwood were two prominent practitioners, both of whom had a virtual monopoly on the New England portrait market. The young and eager New Englander learned a good deal from both but, in less time than anyone could have predicted, went on to surpass them.
Despite his success, and as much as he struggled to overcome the limitations of his American colonial environment, Copley dreamed of the unseen world that lay on the European side of the Atlantic. He resolved that he would one day make the grand tour to inspect master paintings firsthand. He also longed to move from portraiture into the field of historical painting, then considered a higher form of artistic expression. Until he could do this, he was busy enough with portrait commissions in various American households, and with the painstaking preparation of a book of anatomical drawings based on two European anatomy books. These show his strength as a draftsman and his determination to rise to the top of his profession. He kept the book with him as a guide throughout his career.
Eventually, revolutionary rumblings interrupted Copley's career in New England. In his view, politics and art did not mix: indeed, he was convinced that politicking was to the artist's disadvantage. Interestingly enough, his sitters in America at this time constituted a mixed following of radicals and high Tories. Thomas Gage and John Wentworth were two of the many Tories he painted, while the flaming revolutionaries Paul Revere and Samuel Adams sat for him as well. When we consider the 1770s were years of volatile politics, we must admire Copley's aplomb. In the artist's correspondence about America's moves toward independence, there are some pacifist undertones, but he was firmly decided on going abroad. He left the colonies in 1774. The pursuit of his art was the overriding concern.

American Painter
Self Portrait ,Oil on canvas, 1780-1784, NPG.77.22 National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC John Singleton Copley is generally recognized as colonial America's preeminent artist. By age nineteen, he was a well-established portrait painter in Boston, dabbling in engraving, pastels, and miniatures. Despite his success with portraits, however, Copley wanted to paint historical scenes, a subject that was in vogue at the time. In 1766 he sent his painting Boy with a Squirrel (1765) to England for exhibition at the Society of Artists, where it received marked praise from the renowned American expatriate artist Benjamin West, who encouraged Copley to study in Europe. However, Copley was reluctant to leave his prosperous career in the colonies. Finally, in 1774, with war looming, he moved with his family to London, where he took up history painting. His American portraits are characterized by fine, detailed representations of faces and fabrics. One key to Copley's success in England was his choice of contemporary subjects that were of interest to his audience. Brook Watson, a London merchant, commissioned Copley to paint a scene from his youth: while swimming in Havana harbor, Watson had been attacked by a shark and lost part of his leg. He subsequently recovered and went on to become a prominent public figure. For Watson, the attack and recovery symbolized his triumph over adversity, and he hoped that the painting would provide "a most usefull Lesson to Youth." The result was a work entitled Watson and the Shark.
