Collinson, James
(British, 1825-1881) The least known painter member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (excluding FG Stephens, who abandoned the practice of art in favour of writing about it), James Collinson would have met Millais Rossetti and Hunt as fellow students at the Royal Academy Schools. Born on 9 May 1825 in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, where his father was a bookseller and printer, Collinson was living in London by 1846, when he exhibited a study of a head at the Society of British Artists. He was a member of the Cyclographic Society in the summer of 1848, and was proposed by Rossetti as a member of the Brotherhood.
A quiet and nervous young man (nicknamed 'the dormouse'), he was teased by Hunt for his lack of camaraderie, needing "to be waked up at the conclusion of the noisy evenings to receive our salutations". A convert to Roman Catholicism, he returned to the Church of England in order to be accepted as Christina Rossetti 's financé, having first proposed marriage in 1848; the engagement ended in the spring of 1850, when Collinson reverted to the Roman faith and resigned from the Brotherhood on the grounds that he could not, "as a Catholic, assist in spreading the artistic opinions of those who are not". He produced The Child Jesus, one of the four etchings in The Germ, and his most important painting in the Pre-Raphaelite style was also of a religious subject, An Incident in the Life of Queen Elizabeth of Hungary (1850).

James left school at the age of sixteen after achieving his GCSE's and within weeks was sitting his entrance exams for the British Army. On 10th September 2001, James had joined the army and spent eighteen weeks training. He passed out on 18th January 2002 when he was posted to Deepcut barracks in Surrey for his second phase of training. The following month, James passed his driving test and was making plans to purchase his first car. He boasted to his Dad about his forthcoming H.G.V training and was making plans to return home on leave over the Easter weekend to be with his Sister for her birthday. On Saturday 23rd of March 2002, James was found dead with a single gunshot wound to the head whilst patrolling the parimeter fence of Deepcut Barracks. Since James's death, the army have insinuated that James had took his own life. Family, friends, teachers, workmates and anybody who knew James disagree.

Chapter Three. Typological Symbolism in the Works of Other Members of the Pre-Raphaelite Circle
    James Collinson's "The Child Jesus"
William Holman hunt was not the only member of the Pre-Raphaelite circle to employ typological symbolism. Although such iconography ultimately proved far more important to him than to any of his associates, he was not alone in using it, nor was he the first member of the Brotherhood to do so. Precedence would seem to belong to Dante Gabriel Rossetti, who made typological allusions in "Ave" and other poems written in 1847. If Rossetti's editors are correct in assigning one of his letters to September 1848, then James Collinson's poem "The Child Jesus" was completed by that date and hence the first Pre-Raphaelite work to employ elaborate prefigurative symbolism ( Letters, I, 43). Collinson's typological poem, which we shall examine in detail, was not published until 1850, when it appeared in The Germ, and this year also marks typological poems and pictures by Rossetti, Hunt, Millais, and Collins. Grieve's assertion that the Pre-Raphaelites came under the influence of the High Church party in Oxford at about this time is thus supported by the works of Collins, Hunt, and Millais, though the earlier date of Collinson's poem suggests that he, like Rossetti, drew independently upon High Church doctrine. Collinson's "The Child Jesus. A Record Typical of the Five Sorrowful Mysteries" is the single most elaborate use of typological symbolism by those associated with the Brotherhood during its early years. Originally, the poem must have had three sections, for Rossetti wrote to his mother that Collinson "has augmented it with two new incidents, by which addition it is now made emblematical of the "five sorrowful mysteries" of the Atonement" (44). As the poem appeared in print, each of its five sections narrates an imagined event from Christ's childhood which prefigures the Passion and Crucifixion. Like George Herbert, Collinson uses the title of each part of his poem to introduce his basic conceit. Thus, the opening section, "The Agony in the Garden," uses Wordsworthian lines to relate how the child Jesus suffered when a hawk killed a pet dove's only fledgling.

    The Empty Purse 'For Sale'
    James Collinson (1825-1881)
Collinson was one of the original members of the Pre-Raphaelite
Brotherhood. He resigned from it in 1850, briefly trained as a Roman Catholic priest and then resumed his artistic career in about 1854. His art was always rooted in the tradition of domestic genre painting, against which, the Pre-Raphaelites rebelled.
The thoughtfulness he gave to his subject matter and his attention to detail were the main legacies of his flirtation with Pre-Raphaelitism. They are apparent in this work.

COLLINSON, WALTER JAMES (1855-1943). Walter James (Frank) Collinson, buffalo hunter, cattleman, and student of the frontier, was born on November 13, 1855, in Yorkshire, England. Shortly after his sixteenth birthday he left boarding school in Beverly and sailed for the United States aboard the San Marcos . He landed at Galveston, Texas, in the fall of 1872 and went to work on the Circle Dot, Judge George H. Noonan's qv horse ranch near San Antonio. In December 1873 Collinson went to work for rancher John T. Lytle qv in southeast Medina County, where he once helped round up and brand a herd of 3,500 cattle and drive them to the Red Cloud Indian Reservation in northwest Nebraska; there the stock was turned over to George Armstrong Custer. qv In October 1874 Collinson became a partner in the two-wagon, six-mule buffalo-hunting outfit run by Jim White and Thomas L. (George) Causey. qv After buying supplies at Frank Conrad's store at Fort Griffin, Collinson moved westward onto the Llano Estacado qv and helped complete the destruction of the southern buffalo herd. In spring 1877 he returned to Fort Griffin with 6,000 tongues, 11,000 hides, and 45,000 pounds of dried meat (
