Born on 9 May 1825 in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, where his father was a bookseller and printer, Collinson was living in London by 1846, when he exhibited a study of a head at the Society of British Artists. He was a member of the Cyclographic Society in the summer of 1848, and was proposed by Rossetti as a member of the Brotherhood. A quiet and nervous young man (nicknamed 'the dormouse'), he was teased by Hunt for his lack of camaraderie, needing "to be waked up at the conclusion of the noisy evenings to receive our salutations". A convert to Roman Catholicism, he returned to the Church of England in order to be accepted as Christina Rossetti's fiancé, having first proposed marriage in 1848; the engagement ended in the spring of 1850, when Collinson reverted to the Roman faith and resigned from the Brotherhood on the grounds that he could not, "as a Catholic, assist in spreading the artistic opinions of those who are not". James Collinson Contributions to The Germ II. The Child Jesus Collinson was born in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, to a bookseller. A student at the Royal Academy school, he exhibited "The Charity Boy's Debut" there in 1847, attracting the friendship of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and later William Holman Hunt. One of the original seven Pre-Raphaelite Brothers, Collinson had recently embraced Catholicism, and grew increasingly disinterested in art, resigning shortly after the demise of The Germ . He retreated to Stonyhurst, where he lived in seclusion until his 1854 marriage to a friend of J. R. Herbert, RA. Collinson eventually resumed painting, but his subjects were now of a domestic and humorous character. He continued to exhibit at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, and the Society of British Artists (of which he was a fellow until 1880). According to William Michael Rossetti, Collinson was one of Christina Rossetti's two suitors (the other was Charles Bagot Cayley, a translator of Dante). Ostensibly Christina Rossetti rejected him on religious grounds. This broken engagement and Collinson's defection angered William Michael Rossetti to the point of expunging him from The PRB Journal . While Collinson's 1850 letter of resignation is printed there, William Michael Rossetti's resentment is evident in his record of the PRB roster: "Hunt, Millais, Dante and William Rossetti, Stephens, Woolner, and another."

Collinson, James painter england 9 May 1825, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire - 24 Jan 1881, Camberwell Son of a bookseller and printer. In 1847 he first exhibited at the Royal Academy Schools with "The Charity Boy's Debut". This painting impressed Gabriel Dante Rossetti, who recommended him for the Preraphaelite Brotherhood, of which he became one of the founding members. In 1848 he became engaged with Christina Rossetti (and asked for her hand) and converted to the Church of England. In 1850 he returned to Catholism and the engagement came to an end. He left the Preraphaelite Brotherhood in 1850, sold all his artistic equipment and joined the Jesuit College at Stonyhurst in 1853. In 1854 he abandoned his education for priesthood and took up painting once more. In 1858 he married Eliza Wheeler, the sister in law of the painter J.R. Herbert. He was on good terms with W.M. Rossetti again and his pictures were part of the Exhibition of British Art which toured the USA in 1857/1858. He also exhibited regularly at the Society of British Artists.
