Julia Margaret Cameron's women are, in a word, lovely. The 19th-century photographer was best known in her lifetime for her portraits of such major figures of the era as Robert Browning, Thomas Carlyle, Charles Darwin, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Alfred Tennysonmany of whom were her friends and neighbors on England's Isle of Wight. But her rich images of women, which convey a wide range of real emotion and experience rarely openly expressed during the Victoria era, are arguably her stro...

A STUDY IN THE METHODS OF DICKENS
BY

LONDON NEW YORK TORONTO
CHAPTER III
THE ILLUSTRATIONS ON THE WRAPPER
M UCH attention has been given to the illustrations on the wrapper and their significance. So far as I can find, the question was first raised in the Spectator . On 1st October 1870, in a review of the first edition of Edwin Drood , the Spectator complained that the publishers had not given a facsimile of the vignetted cover. The critic proceeds: "By whom was the lamplight discovery of a standing figure, apparently meant for Edwin Drood, in the vignette at the bottom of the page, intended to be made?" He inquired also whether the man entering with the lanthorn was John Jasper, and what were the directions given by Mr. Dickens as to the ascent of the winding staircase represented on the right hand of the cover. The Spectator asked for any authentic indications which might exist of the turn which Dickens intended to give to the story. "Nor can we see how it can be possible that no such indications exist, with this prefiguring cover to prove that he had not only anticipated, but disclosed to some one or other, many of the situations he intended to paint." Since then others, and in particular Mr. Andrew Lang, have with much insistency declared that the bottom picture represents a meeting of the risen Edwin Drood with his horror-stricken uncle, John Jasper.

CHAKA KHAN
Chaka Khan is an American musician. She was born Yvette Marie Stevens in 1953 at Chicago . She began singing professionally at the age of 11, forming a group called the Crystalettes. At, 13, she was christened Chaka by an African shaman, and by 15, she was performing in local clubs under that name, (she acquired the Khan part after a brief marriage). At 18, she found herself in Los Angeles , fronting a group of fledgling musicians by the name of Rufus . Chaka brought to the ensemble a vocal range that can only be described as primalher impassioned and perfectly pitched contralto was in a class by itself. The proof of the powerful voice was apparent in the band ' s 1974 'Rag's To Rufus' Album, which netted Chaka's 1st Grammy for 'Tell Me Something Good' which was written especially for her by Stevie Wonder. In the years to come, Chaka and Rufus would prove to be one of the most popular and influential groups in music, effortlessly bridging the gap between pop, rock and soul. In just five years, they notched 11 chart albums and nine Top 40 hits, including 'Sweet Thing,' ' Once You Get Started' and 'You Got The Love.' In 1978 she left the band and went solo.

TO THE MEMORY OF
CHARLES ALLSTON COLLINS.
(9th April, 1873.) FIRST SCENE.
The Cottage on the Frontier. PREAMBLE. THE place is France. The time is autumn, in the year eighteen hundred and seventythe year of the war between France and Germany. The persons are, Captain Arnault, of the French army; Surgeon Surville, of the French ambulance; Surgeon Wetzel, of the German army; Mercy Merrick, attached as nurse to the French ambulance; and Grace Roseberry, a traveling lady on her way to England. CHAPTER I. THE TWO WOMEN. IT was a dark night. The rain was pouring in torrents. Late in the evening a skirmishing party of the French and a skirmishing party of the Germans had met, by accident, near the little village of Lagrange, close to the German frontier. In the struggle that followed, the French had (for once) got the better of the enemy. For the time, at least, a few hundreds out of the host of the invaders had been forced back over the frontier. It was a trifling affair, occurring not long after the great German victory of Weissenbourg, and the newspapers took little or no notice of it. leading from the bed-chamber into the yard, was locked; and the wooden shutter protecting the one window of the room was carefully barred. Sentinels, doubled in number, were placed at all the outposts. The French commander had neglected no precaution which could reasonably insure for himself and for his men a quiet and comfortable night.

The pre-Raphaelites worshipped nature - until their obsessive attention to rocks and leaves brought on a crisis of faith
Kathryn Hughes
Saturday February 7, 2004 The Guardian
Last year's pre-Raphaelite exhibition at the Royal Academy in London reanimated that old conversation about where British painting of the third quarter of the 19th century fits into the grand narrative of modern art. Andrew Lloyd Webber's collection of figurative Victorian painting, dominated by Burne-Jones, was a gift to anyone looking for an easy way to damn pre-Raphaelitism by association with one of its most enthusiastic private collectors as kitschy, commercial and critically debased. So a new exhibition at Tate Britain comes as a bracing reminder of the breadth of the pre-Raphaelite project and of its centrality in British and European painting. It concerns itself with nature painting and explores the way in which the pre-Raphaelites, both the original brotherhood as well as the much looser second generation, chose to follow Ruskin's rallying cry in Modern Painters to paint nature with a renewed attention to detail, "rejecting nothing, selecting nothing". By throwing off the clutter of inherited schemata and looking at the natural world with an innocent eye, Ruskin hoped that a new generation of painters would rediscover their reverence for God's extraordinary handiwork. Generalised washes of sky, a splatter of green for trees, the downgrading of landscape to mere background would no longer do, on aesthetic or moral grounds.
