Cole, Thomas Cole, Thomas, , American landscape painter, b. England. He arrived in the United States in 1818 and moved to Ohio, where he was impressed by the beauty of the countryside. In 1825 he went to New York, where his landscape paintings began to be appreciated. Largely self-taught, he depicted the scenery of the Hudson River valley and the Catskills, which he discovered on long walking trips, becoming a leader of the Hudson River school . In 1829 he went to Europe, where he spent some time sketching in England and Italy. In Paris he greatly admired the landscapes of Claude Lorrain. After he returned to New York, he was commissioned (1832) to paint his five famous allegorical scenes, farfetched and neoclassical in style, known as the Course of Empire (N.-Y. Historical Soc., New York City). This series and the Expulsion from the Garden of Eden (Mus. of Fine Arts, Boston) reflect his strong moralizing tendencies, combined with elements of fantasy; they are far less successful than his landscapes. Other works, such as Oxbow (Metropolitan Mus.) and

Cole, Thomas Voyage of Life: Childhood/Youth/Manhood/Old Age
On-Line Art Medium Art Art Form Oil on canvas Keywords Aging Death and Dying Nature Religion ... Time Summary The Voyage of Life series is an allegory of the four stages of man: childhood, youth, manhood, and old age. In each painting, accompanied by a guardian angel, the voyager rides in a boat on the River of Life. The landscape, corresponding to the seasons of the year, plays a major role in telling the story. In childhood, the infant glides from a dark cave into a rich, green landscape. As a youth, the boy takes control of the boat and aims for a shining castle in the sky. The last two pictures reverse the boat's direction. In manhood, the adult relies on prayer and religious faith to sustain him through rough waters and a threatening landscape. Finally, the man becomes old and the angel guides him to heaven across the waters of eternity. The wild, untamed nature found in America was viewed as its special character; Europe had ancient ruins, but America had the uncharted wilderness. As his friend William Cullen Bryant sermonized in verse, so Cole sermonized in paint. Both men saw nature as God's work and as a refuge from the ugly materialism of cities. Cole clearly intended the Voyage of Life to be a didactic, moralizing series of paintings using the landscape as an allegory for religious faith.

I thought we had done two other images during our meeting with Jelilli. Are they going to be loaded up? It seems to take quite a while for WebChat to boot up and the quality of the images is disappointing. It is hard to read the intensity of the fire in the second image, which I like a lot. Since I have been looking into the geological meaning behind 'The Deluge,' the lava replacing water is interesting. I hope the image we produced with the rainbow did not get lost. We decided to add one to the Cole painting because it is a common motif in depictions of Noah's ark.
anonymous: . . . . Tue, Dec 5, 12:24AM EST (-0500 GMT)
I really like the "lava as water" manipulation. It was the second one we did and proved to be very difficult to create. The manipulation with the rainbow is not here. I did not like that one as much anyway. The first picture really dramatizes the composition. It is not quite as realistic as the lava picture, but I still like it.

Thomas Cole biography
A biography of a great American landscape painter of the nineteenth century, Thomas Cole, and a discussion of some major themes in his work
The nineteenth century saw the development of a type of painting which came to be called the Hudson River School. One of the founders and greatest painters in the Hudson River School was Thomas Cole. Thomas Cole was born in Bolton-le-Moors, Lancashire, England in 1801. His family immigrated to America when he was 17. Cole probably learned the basics of oil painting from an itinerant portrait artist named John Stein, and in addition spent two years at the Pennsylvania School of Fine Arts. He first exhibited in New York, where painter Asher B. Durand and Colonel John Trumbull saw his work and found patrons for him. bodyOffer(29998) In the nineteenth century there were several ways artists sold their work. Some artists worked on commission, in which case a person, called a patron, would hire them to paint a certain scene or portrait. These patrons often provided money for artists to travel, particularly in Italy, Greece or France. European travel was considered essential to an artists development and training. In addition, artists could make work that was not specifically commissioned, and put that work in shows or galleries where people would see the work, and possibly purchase it. After purchasing several of Coles paintings from the gallery where he was exhibiting, George W. Bruen paid for Coles first trip up the Hudson River, the area he and other painters would return to so frequently in their work that they became known as the Hudson River School.

Cole began his career by exploring nature and making detailed drawings that became the foundations of his painting style. He was “discovered” in 1825, when an artist, Asher B. Durand, and a patron saw three of his Hudson Valley paintings in New York City. His meticulous landscapes were admired, but his allegorical painting, his personal favorites, were not. Cole, unfortunately, died a poor man. Hudson River School Masters Price: U.S. $

Introduction Colonial Portraits Colonial and Federal Decorative Arts Landscape ... Ash Can School American landscape painting came of age in the mid-19th century. Thomas Cole was the leader of the landscape painters and co-founded with Thomas Doughty the Hudson River School. Cole and his colleagues carefully recorded every aspect of nature, from the blazing sunset to the humblest plant, and were also instrumental in creating a new lyrical spaciousness in landscape painting. Frederic Church, Martin Johnson Heade, and other members of the second generation of the Hudson River School (often referred to as the Luminists) added the glowing atmosphere, flickering light, and textural differentiations that so poetically describe the American experience of nature.
American Lake Scene Like many other artists of his generation, Cole sought to express the spiritual in the actual. Here, a small lake, a cloudless sky, a fallen tree, and a lone Indian evoke the peace and tranquility of the American wilderness. A contemporary critic recognized Cole's intention when this picture was exhibited in New York in 1844. "It is the very poetry of solitude," he wrote, "and you hold your breath lest the echo of your voice should frighten you . . . . It looks like the earth before God breathed on it."

Powell Book Description: Thomas Cole (1801-1848) is widely considered the founder of the popular Hudson River School of painting. Cole, who emigrated to the United States from England in 1819, awakened a passion for landscape that would characterize American painting throughout the 19th century and change the way Americans, and the world, viewed the young nation. In a series of breathtaking canvases, painted principally in the Catskill Mountains, Cole portrayed vast spaces, awesome horizons, and vibrant color. Earl A. Powell III, director of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, traces Cole's development and explores the Romantic theories that guided his thinking and informed his vision. Superb color reproductions bring Cole's paintings to life, revealing the America that once was. EARL A. POWELL III, director of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., has written articles and exhibition catalogues on American artists of the 19th and 20th centuries, and has curated exhibitions devoted to the art of those periods.
