Frederic Edwin Church - Niagara Falls from the American Side, 1867 National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh He visited the Falls again in August 1858 and stayed for a month. He chartered the Maid of the Mist to take him to the base of the Horseshoe Falls. The captain kept the steamer headed into the current for 40 minutes while Church sketched. The resulting work was sent to London to be exhibited and draw for chromolithographs. It is lost today. The work above is one of the largest he painted, measuring 8 ft 6 inches by 7 ft 7 inches. One of the nation's most highly acclaimed artists in the nineteenth century, Church painted a detailed and optimistic vision of landscape, reflecting his belief that nature was a transcendental source of strength and virtue. He described the icebergs he painted, with his canvases lashed to the masts of rocking ships, as "a vast metropolis in ice, pearly white and red as roses, glittering in the sunset." Frederic Edwin Church Frederic Edwin Church was the prophet-painter of his era. Church did not call himself that, his adoring public did. He was an artist with the right talent in the right place at the right time, mesmerizing thousands of viewers with the size and magnificence of the landscapes he executed. Landscape painting (The Hudson River School) was then coming into its own in the art world. Overtaking portraiture and historical projections as a more popular art genre, it was considered an exalted form of communion with nature. Nowhere was this truer than in America where the endless uncontaminated stretches of the New World enchanted the eye and breathed notions of immortality to the soul. The wonder of it was that Church was able to embrace such transcendental notions in his canvases. He painted with a spectacular handling of light and an unerring skill in controlling large-scaled artistic conceptions. Church was born in Hartford, Connecticut, and has often been termed a "Yankee of Yankees." His father was a prosperous businessman who was not exactly enthusiastic about his son's inclination toward art, grumbling that it was an "unprofitable" trade. By the time the junior Church was twenty, however, he could live comfortably on the sale of his Hudson River and New England landscapes. Three years later, he emerged a full-fledged member of the National Academy of Design. At the height of his powers, he executed a panorama of Niagara Falls and another of the Andes which captured the imagination of the entire nation. Their appeal even spread abroad where the English generously proclaimed Church a successor to the great Turner, and the French whispered that here at last were the beginnings of a distinctively American artistic tradition.

Signed, lower left Museum purchase, 978-0-102 American artists of the mid-nineteenth century usually went to Europe or the western frontier in order to expand their repertoire. Frederic Church went first to the tropics and volcanoes of South America. His reasons make a fascinating chapter in the history of American art and thought. Church was the best known pupil of Thomas Cole, who recognized the singularity of American wilderness landscape and was the first to invest it with heroic grandeur. Church, like other painters of his generation, John Kensett, Sanford R. Gifford, and Jasper Cropsey, sketched and painted the Catskills and mountains of New England. In his early pictures he gave to water a reflective, burnished surface, to sunset clouds dramatic color and substance, and painted distant detail so clearly that his picture space seems filled with transparent radiance. By the early Church was not only painting views of specific American places with topographical exactitude, he was also combining separate elements of meticulously detailed scenery into landscapes of heroic breadth and depth.
