http://www.md.huji.ac.il/special/chagall/chagall.html
The Synagogue of the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center was dedicated on February 6th, 1962, as part of Hadassah's Golden Anniversary celebration. The floors and interior walls are made of Jerusalem Stone, and the Synagogue is illuminated by a hanging lantern and by sunlight which streams through the magnificent Chagall Windows. Marc Chagall, who was present at the dedication, spoke of the joy he felt in bringing "my modest gift to the Jewish people, who have always dreamt of biblical love, of friendship and peace among all people; to that people who lived here, thousands of years ago, among other Semitic people. My hope is that I hereby extend my hand to seekers of culture, to poets and to artists among the neighboring people." The creation of the Windows was a labor of love to Chagall and his assistant, Charles Marq, both of whom worked on the project for two years. Marq developed a special process of veneering pigment on glass which allowed Chagall to use as many as three colors on a single uninterrupted pane, rather than being confined to the traditional technique of separating each color pane by lean strips. To ensure that each window receives the proper light, Marq came to Jerusalem and made tests on the spot where each of the windows was to be placed.

Introduction
The great Russian artist, Marc Chagall (1887-1985), created a genre virtually his own with his lively renderings of Russian village life, as filtered through the prism of Yiddish folklore, and his illustrations of folk tales and Bible stories. Chagall's Jewish heritage and his reliance on the culture of an East European Jewish village for his inspiration and subject matter provide a link between two otherwise separate careers.
Chagall's highly imaginative and very personal style took shape after he moved to Paris in 1920. The popular success of his designs for the dome of the Paris Opera in 1964 led to a commission (1966) for two enormous murals in the foyer of New York's metropolitan opera house. At the suggestion of New York's Modern Museum of Art, Chagall spent World War II in the United States. Chagall's later work, infused with strong religious overtones, includes stained-glass windows (1960-61) for the

http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/tl/20th/emigres.html
Artistic Emigres
As the center of artistic interest, Paris attracted many foreign painters in the early 20th century, and within a few years of each other three Jewish émigrés, Chaim Soutine, Marc Chagall, and Amedeo Modigliani , had all arrived in the city. Though they became friends and gained inspiration from the recent innovations in art, they were each highly original artists and their paintings stand alone, defying categorization and imitation. The three painters that we look at here were all born outside France, and they remained outsiders to the Parisian art scene for more than merely cultural reasons (Soutine and Chagall were both Russian, and Modigliani was Italian). These painters shared the isolation of being ``other'', never truly belonging to any group or adhering to a single manifesto.
Chaim Soutine, a passionate Expressionist
Chaim Soutine (1894-1943) came to Paris in 1913. He was the only painter in the city who was in the least like Georges Rouault, and as a Parisian Expressionist, he belonged to the ``School of Paris''. Soutine's style of applying thickly encrusted paint was quite different from Rouault's, but his wild, chaotic spirit, sorrowful and vehement, is like that of the Frenchman. Just as Rouault, despite his Fauvist connections, is seen as inherently Expressionist, so Soutine was a natural, though singular, Expressionist. Soutine's religion was the earth. He painted the sacredness of the country with a passion that makes his art hard to read.

Marc Chagall 1887-1985

Marc Chagall
Russian born French painter and designer. Chagall was born in Visyebsk, Russia (Now Belarus), the oldest of nine sons. Later in Paris Marc found everything he needed for his new career in art. The Russian (expressionism) and French (cubism) styles of painting gave Chagall his vivid colors. He is famous for his Self Portrait with Seven Fingers and his Me and My Village . Chagall lived in France for much of his life. Chagall explored stained glass in the late fifties and early sixties and designed windows for the Cathedral in Metz and for the Hadassah Hebrew University Medical Center in Jerusalem. He also designed windows for the Cathedral at Reims, and for Saint Etienne Church at Mayence. He died in St. Paul de Vence, France, 1985.
