A (French, 1839-1906) His early works were often pictures of violent and melodramatic subjects made with thick, dark paint . Exposed to the work of the Impressionists , his palette lightened, but he reacted to the lack of structure in the Impressionists' paintings by developing a way of using color to render his images as compositions of planes , or, as he described it in a letter to Emile Bernard in 1904, in a kind of empirical geometry of " cylinders spheres , and cones ." Because his efforts established the foundation of the modernist trend toward abstraction , Cézanne is widely known as the "Father of Modern Art."

Paul Cezanne: a biography....
(b. Jan. 19, 1839, Aix-en-Provence d. Oct. 22, 1906, Aix-en-Provence) P aul Cézanne, the son of a wealthy banker, grew up with Emile Zola, the famous novelist. Cezanne, a highly nervous and inhibited boy, developed artistic interests at an early age, much to the dismay of his father. In 1862, after a number of family disputes, he was given a small allowance and sent to study art in Paris, where Zola had already gone. There he was introduced to the famed circle of artists who met at the Café Guerbois, which included Manet Degas and Pisarro, but his shyness prevented him from becoming an intimate. The group was the 'new wave' in art, and produced realistic work whose style and subject matter shocked many of their contemporaries. Cezanne especially admired the romantic painter Delacroix and, among the younger masters, Courbet and Manet Many of Cezanne's early works were darkly tonal, but he gradually came to portray contemporary life. He was greatly influenced by Camille Pisarro, who befriended him and introduced him to the new impressionist technique of portraying light. Pisarro, like

PAUL SOLMAN: "With an a Paul Cezanne once said, "I want to astonish Paris." And astonish Paris he did a hundred years ago, the same way great artists usually do, by painting the world differently than it had ever been painted before. For Paul Cezanne, that meant abandoning the imitation of reality to create his own peculiar sense of what he saw. In the process, he led the 20th century to what we now call Modern Art. The Grand Boulevard, not of Paris, but Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where until September 1st, the Museum of Art is hosting the first major retrospective of Cezanne’s work in 60 years. (music in background) For viewers, probably the chance of a lifetime to see at a shot 200 plus oil paintings, water colors, and drawings by the master who inspired so much of modern art. For Cezanne expert Joseph Rishel, the exhibit’s co-curator, the chance of a lifetime, to showcase a subtle revolutionary. JOSEPH RISHEL, Philadelphia Museum of Art: He helps us to see things in a different light. I mean, the greatest gift art can do for anybody is to reinvent the obvious, and that very happy feeling once you get it, and there will be that little click, and then you’ll love it because it will seem so obvious. And you won’t feel dumb; you’ll feel very happy, and then you’ll find something else to get.

Paul CEZANNE
Cezanne was the most revolutionary French painter of his age.His artistic impulses began with the Impressionists and then went beyond them and ultimately reversed their values by excluding atmoshere and transitory effects, in favour of a firm stucture. In this he was a precursor of Cubism and other movements that liberated art from pure naturalism. In his early works Cezanne fell under the spell of Eugene Delacroix's work. This was unfortunate, since his early oil paintings followed the worst aspects of Delacriox's technique and exagerated them, using black too freely. At this stage he was also influenced by Gustave Courbet, Honore Daumier as well as Manet. Cezanne became an impressionist, in the early 1870's when he met and stayed with Dr.Gachet, an admirer of modern paintings. This was a critical phase in his career; his palette became lighter and he absorbed the Impressionist doctrines on light and landscape. His interest in colour coupled with his painstaking slowness and acute self-criticism, led Cezanne more and more to still life as a subject. This was a field of painting in which Cezanne excelled, illustrating his sense of form and colour. In his last years Cezanne became friendly with the Paris art dealer, Ambriose Vollard, who put on a one-man show of his paintings in 1895. Cezanne was at last recognized, not only in France but also in Europe.

Paul Cezanne (French, 1839-1906)
Cezanne was one of the greatest of the Post-Impressionists and a key figures in the development of Modernism. Although Cezanne particiapeted in several of the Impressionist group exhibitions, his goal was to return French art to a classical art based upon nature, and his exhaustive studies of nature and his portraits and still lives attempt to penetrate to the structure of things beneath their surface appearances. Less concerned with the truth to be found in the appearances of things, his efforts to burst through into the underlying reality made him a revered figure to modernists such as Bonnard, Matisse, and Picasso. Cezanne only made five prints during his lifetime, 5 etchings (of which this is one) and four lithographs. All of the etchings date from July 1873 when he was experimenting with his friend, the painter Armand Guillaumin, who is portrayed in the etching entitled "At the sign of the hanged man." According to Michel Melot, The Impressionist Print (Yale University Press, 1996), the artists made their prints at the studio of Dr. Gachet, who had an etching press and made a number of etchings. Melot describes Cezanne's etchings as characterized by the "extraordinary violence" with which Cezanne attacked the plate, experimenting at a technique in which he had never been trained.
