Mary Cassatt
by Eleanor Tufts Mary Cassatt, b. Allegheny City, Pa., May 22, 1847 [1844?], d. June 14, 1926, was the first American artist to associate with the impressionists and the only American ever to exhibit with them (1877, 1879, 1880, 1881, 1886). She was also the first to promote the impressionists in the United States and is responsible for the appearance of many impressionist paintings in American collections. Cassatt trained (1861-65) at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts . In 1872 she studied graphic techniques at the Academy of Parma in Italy. She settled in Paris and submitted works to the 1872 and 1873 Salons. Her submission to the 1874 Salon, Portrait of Mme. Cortier (Maxwell Galleries, San Francisco), attracted the attention of Edgar Degas, who remarked, "There is someone who feels as I do." In 1875 she studied briefly with the academic painter Charles Chaplin; two years later she met and began a close association with Degas, who invited her to join the impressionist group. When Cassatt exhibited A Woman in Black at the Opera (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston) in the impressionist show of 1880, the influence of Degas and of their mutual study of Japanese prints was clearly evident: the subject of a woman seated in a balcony, peering through opera glasses; the asymmetry of composition, reinforced by vertical and diagonal bands in the background; the development of distant figures with loose, sketchy brushstrokesall are quotations from Degas's many theater scenes.

Mary Cassatt Biography 1844-1926
After the Bath, 1901, Pastel Mary Cassatt is well known in North America. But when Europeans talk or write about Impressionism, names like Monet, Manet, Renoir, Sisley or Pissarro are mentioned. But few know the American woman artist Mary Cassatt. Is it because she was a woman and an American? Her beautiful art work has earned her a place in the pantheon of the great Impressionist artists.
Born in Pennsylvania
Mary Cassatt was born in 1844 in Pennsylvania, USA as the daughter of a wealthy merchant. At the age of seven her family left for Paris in France. After a few years of life in Paris, the family went back to the USA. Mary, impressed by all the art she had seen in Europe, surprised her parents by the wish to become an artist. Becoming an artist in the 19th century was as difficult for a woman as becoming a doctor. Society then had a different understanding of the role of women.

She copied the old masters in the Louvre and other museums. White House Dream Team: Mary Cassatt
Mary Cassatt Mary Cassatt is one of the first great female American painters. She followed her dreams and became an artist. At age 16, Mary attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Four years later she moved to France to begin her career. This young American received the chance of a lifetime in 1877 when notable French painter, Edgar Degas, asked her to join a group of painters. This group included now-famous painters, such as Manet and Renoir. Their style or type of painting is called Impressionism. They used primary colors and short brush strokes in their work. Mary's work largely depicts mothers and children doing everyday tasks. She painted "Young Mother and Two Children" in 1908. The painting was given to the White House by an anonymous donor in 1954. Mary painted until 1914, when her eyesight weakened. She died in 1926.

The Cassatt family was affluent and cultured: Mary's father was a stockbroker, while her mother, who came from an old established Pennsylvania family, was an accomplished woman who spoke French and read widely, and provided Mary with an excellent example to follow. It is, perhaps, no accident that so many of the women in Mary Cassatt's paintings are engaged in simple, self-contained tasks like reading or sewing, since these were the everyday activities of the Cassatt household.

Figure 1.This engraving was made during Mary's first trip abroad in 1854. Interestingly, she and her younger brother Gardner seem more interested in the artist than the chess game between brother Robbie and her father. Gardner was abot 5 years old and Robbie abour 12. Note Gardner's Scottish outfit. Robbie died only a year after this engraving was made. Click on the image for a fuller discussion. Perhaps the artist most associated with wonderful images of childhood is the American impressionist artist Mary Cassatt. Mary was the daughter of an affluent Pittsburgh businessman, whose French ancestry had inspired him with a passion for his ancestrial home. It was natural therefore that Mary, with her interest in art, would be drawn to France. As much as we admire Cassatt's work, we have not given her great attention in HBC. This is primarily because she primarily focused on very young children in non descript clothing or infants being bathed. As a result, they often do not include depictions of period clothing in which we are primarily interested. There are, however, a few interesting images of older children in period clothes.
Parents
Mary's father was an affluent Pittsburgh businessman from a respectable, conservative family. His ancestors were French and he had a passionate attraction for the land of his ancestors.

Mary Cassatt (1884-1926)
Mary Cassatt is one of America's most famous women artists. Against her father's wishes, Cassatt moved to Paris, France to paint, study and exhibit with other Impressionists. She is most famous for her paintings of women doing everyday activities such as bathing a child, writing letters or drinking tea. In this painting, The Bath, Cassatt shows a mother bathing her child. Like fellow artists, Edgar Degas and Berthe Morisot , Cassatt liked to surprise us with an unexpected viewpoint. In this painting, you can imagine you are standing looking down at the mother and child.
