Portal Universia S.A. Contacte con nosotros

«She was a great practical support to the movement as a whole, both by providing direct financial help and by promoting the works of Impressionists in the USA, largely through her brother Alexander. By persuading him to buy works by Manet, Monet, Morisot, Renoir, Degas and Pissarro, she made him the first important collector of such works in America. She also advised and encouraged her friends the Havemeyers to build up their important collection of works by Impressionists and other contemporary French artists.» Portal Universia S.A. Cassatt, Mary Stevenson
(1844-1926), painter Born on May 22, 1844, in Allegheny City (now part of Pittsburgh), Pennsylvania, Mary Cassatt lived in Europe for five years as a young girl. She was tutored privately in art in Philadelphia and attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1861-65, but she preferred learning on her own and in 1866 traveled to Europe to study. Her first major showing was at the Paris Salon of 1872; four more annual Salon exhibitions followed. In 1874 Cassatt chose Paris as her permanent residence and established her studio there. She shared with the Impressionists an interest in experiment and in using bright colors inspired by the out-of-doors. Edgar Degas became her friend; his style and that of Gustave Courbet inspired her own. Degas was known to admire her drawing especially, and at his request she exhibited with the Impressionists in 1879 and joined them in shows in 1880, 1881, and 1886. Like Degas, Cassatt showed great mastery of drawing, and both artists preferred unposed asymmetrical compositions. Cassatt also was innovative and inventive in exploiting the medium of pastels. Initially Cassatt was a figure painter whose subjects were groups of women drinking tea or on outings with friends. After the great exhibition of Japanese prints held in Paris in 1890, she brought out her series of 10 colored prints

Mary Cassatt, american impressionist
Mary Cassatt was the one of the few female Impressionistic painters and one of the few Americans to break into this group.
Impressionism was the art form favored by an elite group consisting mostly of Frenchmen. Names like Renoir, Degas, and Monet are recognized as some of history's greatest artists. The fraternity of French Impressionism was invaded by a lone American woman Mary Cassatt. Mary Stevenson Cassatt was born on May 22, 1845 in what is today called Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. When she was fifteen, Mary entered the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. (By this time, her family had moved across the state and lived in the Philadelphia area.) At the academy, Mary focused on drawing human figures. bodyOffer(26121) Having studied under artists who were themselves taught in France and otherwise influenced by the frequent French art exhibits held in Philadelphia, Mary decided to go to Europe to further her studies in Paris. In 1867, Mary submitted some of her work to be juried by the Paris Salon, a very important art exhibit at that time. She was turned down in this first attempt, but a year later, her painting, "La Mandoline," was accepted. Her first appearance in the Paris Salon coincided with the first appearance of the controversial Impressionists. This was her first connection with this art group. Despite her first major success, Mary returned to Pennsylvania when she was 26 years old, with the intention of settling down and perhaps opening her own art studio. However, Philadelphia lacked the ingredients that Cassatt felt necessary for serious art making outstanding collections to study, exciting modern art, picturesque models. When her family moved to rural Hollidaysburg in the western part of Pennsylvania, she was forced to close her Philadelphia gallery. Living in a small town, away from the art world, frustrated Mary, and she longed to return to Europe.

Harriet Tubman Although MARY CASSETT lived most of her life in France, she was born in Pennsylvania in 1844. Determined to be a professional artist, she studied abroad and was enriched by her association with Edgar Degas. Cassatt was the only American to exhibit with the French Impressionists, gaining respect and success in France much sooner than in her native land. In her mid-forties, Cassatt's work focused more on the mother and child theme, for which she is best known. She also branched out from painting into printmaking and other graphic arts. Cassatt is viewed as the first great American woman artist.

Art Institute of Chicago Chicago, Illinois www.artic.edu Mary Cassatt: Modern Woman T he Art Institute of Chicago is proud to present Mary Cassatt: Modern Woman , the first retrospective in 30 years of the work of one of the greatest artists this country has produced. On view in the Art Institute's Regenstein Hall, the Daniel F. and Ada L. Rice Building, October 13, 1998, through January 10, 1999, the exhibition brings together approximately 100 of the Cassatt's most beautiful and compelling paintings, pastels, drawings, and prints, from public and private collections worldwide. Mary Cassatt has been organized by the Art Institute in collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (to be shown there February 14-May 9, 1999), and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., where it will be seen June 6 -September 6, 1999. Mary Cassatt (1844-1926) is an artist of surprisesmostly small, but often subtle and profound. Known to this day as a "painter of mothers and children," a sobriquet given in her lifetime, she approached this, her favorite subject, with the surprisingly unsentimental but sympathetic clarity she used to address all her subjects. Born into a well-to-do, fairly conventional American family, Cassatt became a genteel rebel, traveling and living alone, partaking of the bohemian life in Paris while developing a magnificent painter's eye and businesswoman's head. She was the only American (and one of only three women) to exhibit with the Impressionists in Parisbecoming close friends with some of thembut moved very much in her own direction after that group splintered, coming to draw on such disparate inspirations as Symbolism and Japanese prints.

National Gallery of Art Washington, D.C. http://www.nga.gov Mary Cassatt at National Gallery of Art T he most comprehensive survey in more than twenty-five years of the work of Mary Cassatt (1844-1926), one of the leading painters of the late nineteenth century, will be on view in the Gallery's East Building through September 6, 1999. Mary Cassatt brings together fifty-five of the artist's most beautiful and compelling paintings and color prints and illustrates many facets of her long and productive career. The Gallery's exhibition will include important works from the Chester Dale Collection, which by the terms of Dale's bequest, cannot be shown elsewhere. It travels to Washington, its final venue, after showings at The Art Institute of Chicago (October 13, 1998 - January 10, 1999) and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (February 14 - May 9, 1999). "Mary Cassatt represents the first comprehensive survey of the artist's work to be shown since the National Gallery's 1970 exhibition," said Earl A. Powell III, director, National Gallery of Art. "We are proud to draw upon our own rich collection of Cassatt's works to illuminate this celebrated and inspirational American artist. We are thankful to Aetna whose generous support has made this exhibition possible." "As an American and a woman, Mary Cassatt is unique among the impressionists who exhibited their works in Paris in the late nineteenth century," said Aetna Chairman and CEO Richard L. Huber. "It is the enduring appeal of her work and its reflection of women in contemporary life that makes all of us at Aetna very pleased to sponsor this exhibition at the National Gallery. Her focus on mothers and children makes her art especially beloved. Certainly, many visitors to our nation's capital this summer will have their stay in Washington enriched by viewing these works by Mary Cassatt."
