Overview
Known for her perceptive depictions of women and children, Mary Cassatt was one of the few American artists active in the nineteenth-century French avant-garde. Born to a prominent Pittsburgh family, she traveled extensively through Europe with her parents and siblings while a child. Between 1860 and 1864 she attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. At the age of twenty-two Cassatt went abroad, studying old master paintings in European museums. In Paris, she studied with prominent academic painters and independently at the Louvre. Returning to the United States for a short period, Cassatt went back to Europe in 1871, spending her time painting and copying the old masters in museums in Italy, Spain, and Belgium. (continue)

Naturalism and sensuality of a pure, elemental, and nonsexual sort are the hallmarks of Cassatt's portrayals of childhood during the 1880s and 1890s. An example is Children on the Shore , which she showed at the last Impressionist exhibition, in 1886. While this seaside subject is unique in her oeuvre, the close-up focus on the pair of toddlers and the firm draftsmanship are typical of the artist's style in the 1880s. In his review of the exhibition, Gustave Geffroy commented on this painting: "[It] has the sharp outline that things and people have on the sand with the background of water and sky. The short arms and the dollish faces let you guess the flesh under a thick laver of suntan." In the same review, Geffroy also responded to the sensuousness of Cassatt's rendering of youngsters in Children in a Garden , likening them to "flowers in the heat."

Mary Cassatt
American painter, born Pittsburgh (1844-1926). Mary Cassatt lived most of her professional career in Europe, like many of her contemporaries among American artists and literary figures. Cassatt began studying painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia (1861-1865), then studied in Paris. Her first painting was accepted for the Salon in 1872. She was introduced to Edgar Degas in 1874, and she first exhibited in an Impressionist show in 1879. From then until 1886 she was an active member of the Impressionist circle. After 1914 she was compelled to stop painting by failing eyesight. 25,000 of the greatest lives
Born on May 22, 1844, in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, Mary Stevenson Cassatt defied the social conventions of her day to become one of America's foremost artists. Growing up in Philadelphia, she was the fifth child of Katherine Kelso Johnston and Robert Simpson Cassatt, a well-to-do real estate and investment broker. Her upbringing was fairly typical for the era and her social class; at school, she prepared for life as a wife and mother, which included lessons in how to run a home as well as in such genteel pastimes as embroidery, music, sketching, and painting. To broaden their children's education, the Cassatts took them to live in Europe for several years during the early 1850s. In 1860, 16-year-old Mary enrolled in the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Despite the fact that women, especially those of the upper class, were discouraged from pursuing careers, she wanted to be a professional artist. By 1862, however, she had grown frustrated with the program's slow pace and inadequate course offerings. She also resented the patronizing attitude of the male teachers and most of her fellow students. She concluded that the best way for her to learn about art would be to go to Europe and study the works of the Old Masters on her own.

Explore the life, times, and works of art of the female American Impressionist mary cassatt through her biography and a guide to her works of art.
http://www.metmuseum.org/explore/cassatt/html/index.html
M ary Cassatt (1844-1926) was a unique artist because she was a woman who succeeded in what was in the nineteenth century a predominantly male profession, because she was the only American invited to exhibit with a group of independent artists later known as the Impressionists, and because she responded in a very distinctive way to their mandate to portray modern life. In regard to Degas's invitation to exhibit with the Impressionists, she told her biographer, Achille Ségard: I accepted with joy. At last, I could work with absolute independence without considering the opinion of a jury. I had already recognized who were my true masters. I admired Manet, Courbet, and Degas. I hated conventional art. Explore the life times , and work of the artist Mary Cassatt. Life

, painter and printmaker. Cassatt, born in Pittsburgh and raised in Philadelphia, was the first American woman artist to achieve eminence comparable with that of her male contemporaries, in her case, Winslow Homer, John Sargent, and Thomas Eakins. During her lifetime, educational and professional options hitherto closed to women gradually opened. Female students attended art schools and a few, like Cecelia Beaux, enjoyed careers. But Cassatt pushed her opportunities further by moving to Paris, then the center of avant-garde experiment, and enthusiastically accepting the influence of Edgar Degas and other impressionists. A five-year family sojourn in Europe during her childhood prepared her for expatriate life. After studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, she returned to Paris in 1866, determined, she wrote, to make herself "a professional." Excluded by gender from the traditionalist École des Beaux Arts, she took lessons where her eye led: at the Louvre, in private studios, and in the plein air.
