23. Emily Carr House
Virtual tour of the childhood home of emily carr, Canadian author and artist, now a museum. Her father Richard carr had this house built of Canadian Redwood in 1864.
http://www.heritage.gov.bc.ca/emily/emily.htm
With an architecture described as both "San Francisco Victorian" and "English Gingerbread," all agree that Emily Carr House is on the must-see list of Victoria's attractions. Centrally located only four blocks from the Inner Harbour and the Provincial Legislature, the house offers its visitors a chance to gain an insight into Canada's first and best known independent artist and writer. Emily was born here in 1871, a scant six months after British Columbia moved from British colonial status to becoming a province of the world's newest nation. She used her brushes and pens to proclaim her pride in this part of Canada for the rest of her life. In the restored rooms of the house, built in 1864, you'll enter into the same Victorian ambiance the Carr family would have known in the 1870's, and upstairs are several of their actual possessions, including some of Emily's pottery and sculpture. One room is now used as the "People's Gallery" to present the work of Canadian artists, and at the rear of the house a small gift shop offers a remarkably varied selection of items produced by Victoria artists and potters.

Canadian Composer Jean Coulthard and Artist Emily Carr: Spiritual Encounters With Nature
    by Glenn D. Colton
as published in the IAWM Journal , Winter 1998, pp. 4-9.
The art of Emily Carr (1871-1945) has exerted a profound and enduring influence upon Coulthard's creative output. After first meeting the artist at Carr's home in Victoria, Canada, in 1936, Coulthard became increasingly absorbed with the concept of capturing in musical terms the varied moods of the West Coast as Carr had done in her landscape paintings.1
The Relationship Between Carr and Coulthard
In studying the relationship between Carr and Coulthard, one cannot help but be struck by the remarkable parallels between the two artists throughout their creative lives. Collectively, the works of Carr and Coulthard constitute some of the greatest achievements in the fields of Canadian music, art, and literature of the twentieth century. For both women, the pursuit of artistic careers represented a transgression of the prevailing ideology of early twentieth-century society towards women-"woman as wife, mother, and homemaker"4-revealing both a strength of character and a deeply felt artistic commitment on the part of both artists.
Both were heavily indebted stylistically to French models-Coulthard to the impressionistic idioms of Debussy and Ravel, Carr to the Post-Impressionist and Fauve Schools-and both experienced a marked stylistic transformation in their late period works. For Carr, this change comprised a shift in the 1930s from emphasis on solid, formalized pictures to those in which "the paint itself is broken in rhythmic swirls and sweeps with a more dashing and seemingly careless handling."5 Coulthard, similarly, has adopted an increasingly eclectic approach since the late 1960s, introducing elements of serial technique, aleatory writing, and electronic music into her stylistic vocabulary.

She returned to France to plead her husband's case in court, then defied the King of France and rejoined her husband in Acadia with ships she obtained in Boston. In 1645, Marie valiantly but unsuccessfully defended Fort La Tour from enemy attack. She mysteriously died in enemy hands three weeks later. Another possible source:

She escaped from the Crees and made her way to York Factory, a Hudson's Bay trading post. On behalf of the Hudson's Bay Company she made a long and dangerous journey through the "Barren Lands" and negotiated a peace treaty between the Chipewyans and the Cree. After the sudden death of this courageous and intelligent woman, the Hudson's Bay post governor wrote "I am almost ready to break my heart." Another possible source:

    Odds and Ends
    Painting
Odds and Ends , by Emily Carr
"I think that one's art is a growth inside one. I do not think one can explain growth. It is silent and subtle. One does not keep digging up a plant to see how it grows." (Carr, Hundreds and Thousands, p. 268) Emily Carr always celebrated her independence and difference from the world around her. This is apparent in all facets of her life, her art and her writing. Dressed in her usual attire, with a net cap covering her hair and wearing a loose-fitting smock, her lifestyle and appearance gained her the reputation of a lonely and struggling artist. Carr changed the way Canadians view the rugged grandness of the forest landscapes of the British Columbia coast. Although her art was not fully esteemed in Canada until her later years, it remains a classic example of the splendor and distinctiveness of Canadian art. Born in 1871, in Victoria, British Columbia, to British parents, Emily was the eighth of nine children. Her parents died when she was young, leaving her strict, oldest sister Edith to care for the family. Emily, who began drawing lessons at the age of eight, asked her financial guardian for permission and monetary support to attend art school in San Francisco, at the California School of Design. She stayed in San Francisco for three years. She also studied in London and the English countryside, for five years, under many different teachers. Then, after a brief period of teaching children and the Ladies Art Club classes in Vancouver, she travelled to France to study under Harry Gibb and Douglas Ferguson.
