HERE HAS BEEN A LOT OF NEAR-NONSENSE written over the past few years by art historians and modern artists, neither of whom have any background in the practical aspects of realistic figure painting, about the incised lines in Caravaggio's paintings. The main idea seems to be that Caravaggio, instead of sketching his placements with a charcoal or a brush, used a sharp stick to gouge the placement lines into the plaster.
But why on earth would he have done that? It is true that he had emotional problems; he was a homicidal maniac, but he was not a mental deficient.
A second idea is that these gouges are reference marks for the placement of the models, while the artist used some kind of projection device to throw an image onto the canvas. But again, why would he do that, rather than use a charcoal or a brush, as everybody else did?
These incisions appear from time to time, when one is transferring the full-sized drawings, the cartoons - particularly in areas where the plaster, the gesso gesso is Italian for plaster), is thick and fresh. These gouges are, in fact, a nuisance and most painters try to avoid them. Recent studies - for instance on Caravaggio's

EXHIBITORS: click here for promotional material In re-release, sixteen years after it was made, and eight years after Derek Jarman 's untimely death, Caravaggio is perhaps the closest Jarman ever came to making a mainstream film. Starring Nigel Terry (Edward II) , Sean Bean ( The Lord of the Rings ), and Tilda Swinton ( The Deep End ), this beautiful film reveals the seventeenth-century painter 's complex lifehis brilliant, nearly blasphemous paintings and flirtations with the underworldwhile also delving into Jarman's major concerns: violence, history, homosexuality, and the relationship between film and painting. Caravaggio incorporates the painter's precise aesthetic into the movie's own visuals and uses the style and mood of his paintings to reflect his life. The result is Jarman's most profound, unsettling and astonishing reflection on art, sexuality and identity. SYNOPSIS ABOUT CARAVAGGIO ABOUT DEREK JARMAN ABOUT THE CAST ...

    http://www.greenmanreview.com/film/film_caravaggio.html
Caravaggio (Zeitgeist, 1986) The legendary painter Michaelangelo da Caravaggio was renowned for the use of theatrical light, chiaroscuro, and for painting saints with the grubby faces and dirty hands of peasants. So it's no surprise that the legendary British filmmaker Derek Jarman memorialized him not in a traditional costume drama but in an historical fantasy film filled with anachronistic objects and dreamlike imagery that bars the viewer from ever believing in Caravaggio as a biography of a 16th century artist. Visually striking and emotionally wrenching, Caravaggio takes liberties with history and plays games with the interpretation of art, making Jarman's movie as difficult to interpret as the work of his titular character. Told in flashbacks from the artist's deathbed, Caravaggio finds the painter in exile after having committed a crime that forced him to leave his home. He recalls his youth selling his paintings and himself on the streets before being discovered in Rome by a Cardinal, who hoped to encourage the boy to paint saints while indulging his private sins. Prominent statesmen and Catholic officials recognize Caravaggio's genius, though his work is often controversial; he paints himself as a debauched young god, and employs whores and street fighters to pose for his saints. While looking for a model for John the Baptist, Caravaggio meets Ranuccio, a laborer and fighter who is only too willing to sell himself for gold coins. Michele (as Caravaggio is called) quickly becomes infatuated with the beautiful young man, and Ranuccio responds to him enough to arouse the envy of his lover, Lena, though the Ranuccio insists that he's only in love with Michele's money. The three have a strange, twisted erotic relationship in which Michele flirts with Lena to make Ranuccio jealous but ends up becoming fond of her, taking pleasure in dressing her up and passing her off as an aristocrat. A violent and tragic chain of events is set in motion when Lena, pregnant with Ranuccio's child, abandons him for the wealthy Scipione Borghese.

    Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio
Renaissance paintings The importance of Caravaggio in 17th century painting is undeniable. He has been described as the greatest Italian painter of his time. His innovative departure from the idealised style of the 16th century, when painting religious themes, brought much criticism, but was influencial in the development of many artists to come. Many of Caravaggio's early works are disturbingly erotic, revealing a tempestuous and volatile character. His life was indeed as much a drama as the images he portrayed in his paintings. Caravaggio had a violent temper and was uncompromising with many who crossed his path. The real life plot of his life drew to a tragic climax when his passionate behaviour led to a charge of murder. It is said that he fought over the score of a court tennis match, killed his opponent and fled. With his art Caravaggio was just as uncompromising. He approached all he painted with an extreme conviction. He once said that only an artist that could "paint well and imitate well" deserved to be called a man. His paintings reflect the drama in his life with intense chiaroscuro effects - light often flows into dark shadowy scenes, at a dramatic angle from an unknown source, illuminating the focal point which as can be seen in one of his most famous works
