http://www.terramuseum.org/about/d_terra_1.html
About Daniel J. Terra Terra's personal collection was first exhibited at the Palmer Museum of Art on the campus of his alma mater, Pennsylvania State University in 1977. When Terra Museum of American Art officially opened in Evanston, the uniquely American theme of a prized painting, George Caleb Bingham's The Jolly Flatboatmen , 1877-78, represented the founder's idea of art as an expression of national identity. After relocating the museum to Chicago, Terra unabashedly stated, "We read so much about our industrial and economic development over the last 150 years, but I think our cultural development is just as great." Bolstered by this belief, Terra founded a second museum of American art, . Giverny is famous as the rural home of the nineteenth-century French artist Claude Monet and the location of an artists' colony where many American Impressionists, such as Theodore Robinson, Lilla Cabot Perry and Theodore Earl Butler, found inspiration. Terra's celebratory vision of America's artistic heritage is also a complement to his neighbors. He congratulated the French for their influence on American art. Yet, Terra subtly insisted that the American painters, whom he honored in the museum, offered something new to the international art scene.

The French Experience: American Artists at Giverny
July 27 - October 20, 2002 In examining the breadth and depth of the Terra Foundation for the Arts collection during Terra Museum's fifteenth anniversary in Chicago, it is appropriate to feature the artists who traveled to France and participated in the American artists colony in Giverny. Attracted by both the picturesque countryside and the close proximity of French Impressionist Claude Monet, the first generation of American artists encouraged others to follow them and to enjoy the summer pleasures of the local community. Artists such as John Leslie Breck, Theodore Earl Butler and Lilla Cabot Perry shared the artistic camaraderie that was beneficial to their artistic development.

    In Monet's Garden"
Seven-year-old Melanie was in a hurry. Not even the crowds of tourists, dismal weather or her older sister's indifference could slow her down.
She raced through the historic house in record time and wouldn't stop until she found exactly what she'd come to see. Finally, amid the trees and blooming flowers, she spotted the small, wooden footbridge. Melanie was as excited as if she'd been handed (ital) carte blanche (unital) at her favorite toy store. She ran back and forth over the little bridge, dodging the crowds of Japanese and German tourists, a big grin plastered on her face.
Of course, this wasn't just any footbridge, but the curved Japanese bridge overlooking the lily ponds Claude Monet immortalized in so many of his paintings.
We were in Monet's garden behind his big vine-covered house in the small village of Giverny, about an hour's train ride from Paris, walking amid the rows of riotously colored flowers bluebells and pink peonies, roses, nasturtiums, poppies and hibiscus that had given the great artist such inspiration and pleasure. After Monet's death, the gardens were left to ruin and were only restored in the late 1970s. Today, they draw hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.
Melanie ignored the crowds. She got out her colored pencils and papers to sketch, ``just like Monet,'' she said seriously.

    • Winter Landscape (AAR Volume 6, Number 6, page 4)
John F. Carlson's archetypal landscapes shows trees with a brook running through them. The trees are not too thickly planted, and behind them one can see a more open patch of ground, that serves as a lighter background for the trees. The landscape is made up of a number of deeply contrasting colors: the black of the trees, the white of the background, the gold of a brook. These make up a distinctive color harmony, one involving violent contrasts from section to section of the painting. Primary colors are sparingly - there will be a little red in trees' leaves, a little yellow in light on water, but mainly the picture is in black and white and reddish brown and gold.

Stokes carefully chose the chapel's furniture. He preferred moveable chairs to pews, and commissioned the intricately inlaid pulpit, choir stalls, and other chancel and apse furnishings from the Florentine craftsmen Mariano and Figli Coppedé. Around the walls are memorial tablets, also designed by Stokes. The tablets commemorate important figures in Columbia's history, including presidents Seth Low and Nicholas Murray Butler. St. Paul's Chapel also contains one of New York City's finest organs, a 94 rank Edward M. Skinner instrument that replaced the smaller original organ in 1938. The organ has 5,348 pipes located in chambers in the choir and below the dome. Organ builder Robert M. Turner constructed the organ console. It matches the shade and style of the existing Italian inlaid woodwork of the choir. The chapel has extraordinary acoustics that highlight the majestic sound of this historic organ. St. Paul’s also has a beautifully voiced bronze bell, donated in 1918 by the Class of 1893. The bell, still rung manually, calls the University community to many of its most significant gatherings.
