In a picture entitled Fish Weirs at Veules-les- Roses he captured an interesting atmospheric quality, but sacrificed his usual virtuoso brush technique and color range to achieve the softened tones of moisture-laden sea air. This was a contrast to works that had been done around Giverny. Similar in style and mood, La Mer a Quiberville has that same sense of moisture laden air as the foam rises from the waves breaking along the stone jetty that juts out, from left to right, along the bottom third of the painting. A sailboat is being tossed about by the waves and there are people standing on the jetty viewing the scene before them. 132 South 17th Street Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19103

Oshkosh, WI http://www.paineartcenter.com/ The Frigon Collection American Images from the Turn of the Century Theodore Robinson, Vermont Valley P aintings associated with the Impressionist movement are currently the most popularly-known, best loved and most widely-assimilated pictures in the history of art, and Impressionism was arguably just as popular a century ago. American Images from the Turn of the Century: The Frigon Collection is a celebration of the American interest in the Impressionist aesthetic both one hundred years ago and today. The movement of Impressionism emerged in France in 1874, when artists like Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir were rejected by the academic Salon. The scorned artists staged their own exhibition in the former studio of the photographer Nadar. Profoundly influenced by photography, the Impressionists' goal, as art historian Frederick Hartt writes, "was to beat photography at its own game, and supply the essentials that the camera missed" the elusive appearance of nature and the psychology of color, light and motion. The term Impressionism was derived from the title of Monet's 1872 port scene ImpressionSunrise The Frigon Collection reveals the extent of artistic expression inspired in American artists by the French Impressionist movement. More than twenty significant paintings celebrate the impressionist theories which American artists including Theodore Earl Butler, Childe Hassam, Louis Ritman and Theodore Robinson encountered during trips to Europe and through their exposure to the work of Impressionist masters.

Sacramento, California http://www.sacto.org/crocker/ Decisive Moments: American Impressionist Painting from West Coast Collections O pening at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, California on August 27, 1999 will be an exquisite selection of forty-six American Impressionist paintings from private collections throughout the West coast. A number of the paintings in this exhibition have not been exhibited publicly in this area before. Decisive Moments offers a rare opportunity to compare the interests and styles of West Coast American Impressionist artists with their counterparts who specialized in depicting scenes of New York City, New England artist colonies, or France. After its development in France during the early 1870s, Impressionism was adapted and transformed by painters throughout Europe and, later, in the United States as well. Responding to the influence of the French artists, particularly to the leadership of Claude Monet after he settled in Giverny, American painters introduced the high key colors, broken brushstroke, and everyday subjects characteristic of Impressionism into their work. Likewise, they looked to many common sources, including photography and Japanese prints, which stimulated their use of pictorial devices such as cropping and asymmetrical compositions. Practiced in this country from as early as 1885 and continuing to flourish into the 1930s, American
