GEORGE BRAQUE

Pablo Picasso Georges Braque Picasso and Braque : Similarities and Differences ... Annotated Bibliography What is Cubism Cubism is a highly influential visual arts style of the 20th century that was created principally by the painters Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque in Paris between 1907 and 1914. The Cubist style emphasized the flat, two-dimensional surface of the picture plane, rejecting the traditional techniques of perspective, foreshortening, modeling, and chiaroscuro and refuting time-honoured theories of art as the imitation of nature. Cubist painters were not bound to copying form, texture, colour, and space; instead, they presented a new reality in paintings that depicted radically fragmented objects, whose several sides were seen simultaneously. Cubism derived its name from remarks that were made by the painter Henri Matisse and the critic Louis Vauxcelles, who derisively described Braque's 1908 work House at L'Ebstaque Les Demoiselles d'Avignon The period from 1910 to 1912 often is referred to as that of Analytical Cubism. In an analytical cubist painting, the object was "taken apart" and reshaped with the use of flat intersecting planes. Paintings frequently combine representational motifs with letters, the latter emphasizing the painter's concern with abstraction; favourite motifs are musical instruments, bottles, pitchers, glasses, newspapers, still lifes, and the human face and figure.

69. Braque 1
Georges braque (1882 1963).
http://www.mcs.csuhayward.edu/~malek/Braque.html
Georges Braque (1882 - 1963) French painter, who, with Pablo Picasso, originated cubism and the cubist style, to become one of the major figures of 20th-century art.
Braque was born May 13, 1882, in Argenteuil-sur-Seine, near Paris; he grew up there and in the port city of Le Havre. In 1899, following in his father's occupation, he apprenticed himself as a house painter. By 1902, however, he had settled in Paris to pursue the study of painting as a fine art; he was deeply impressed by the bold style of works exhibited in 1905 by the Fauves (French for the wild beasts). The Fauves included Henri Matisse and Andre Derain, who painted with brilliant colors and a loose structure of forms to capture the most intense emotional response. Braque adopted Fauvism from 1906 to 1907.
By 1908, however, Braque had shifted his attention to the paintings of Paul Cezanne, who was reputed to have restored order and discipline to the extremes of artistic expression. Braque's interest in Cézanne's strangely distorted forms and unconventional perspective led him to paint in the manner that came to be called cubist. In his works of 1908 to 1913 Braque conducted an intense study of the effects of light and perspective and the technical means that painters use to represent these effects. He seemed to question most standard artistic conventions. In his village scenes, for example, Braque frequently reduced an architectural structure to a geometric form approximating a cube—or, more precisely, a rectangular prism—yet rendered its shading so that its volume seemed to be contradicted—that is, it looked both flat and three-dimensional. In this way Braque called attention to the very nature of visual illusion and artistic representation.

He grew up in Le Havre and studied evenings at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts there from about 1897 to 1899. He left for Paris to study under a master decorator to receive his craftsman certificate in 1901. From 1902 to 1904 he painted at the Académie Humbert in Paris, where he met Marie Laurencin and Francis Picabia By 1906 Braque's work was no longer Impressionist but Fauve in style; after spending that summer in Antwerp with Othon Friesz, he showed his Fauve work the following year in the Salon des Indépendants in Paris. His first solo show was at D.-H. Kahnweiler's gallery in 1908. From 1909 Pablo Picasso and Braque worked together in developing Cubism; by 1911 their styles were extremely similar. In 1912 they started to incorporate collage elements into their paintings and to experiment with the papier collé (pasted paper) technique. Their artistic collaboration lasted until 1914. Braque was wounded during World War I; upon his recovery in 1917 he began a close friendship with Juan Gris. After World War I his work became freer and less schematic. His fame grew in 1922 as a result of a major exhibition at the Salon d'Automne in Paris. In the mid 1920s Braque designed the decor for two Sergei Diaghilev ballets. By the end of the decade he had returned to a more realistic interpretation of nature, although certain aspects of Cubism always remained present in his work. In 1931 Braque made his first engraved plasters and began to portray mythological subjects. His first important retrospective took place in 1933 at the Kunsthalle Basel. He won First Prize at the Carnegie International in Pittsburgh in 1937.

Sorgues, early September 1912 (160 Kb); Charcoal and pasted paper, 62 x 44.5 cm (24 3/8 x 17 1/2 in); Private collection; M.-F./C. 1 In Fruitdish and Glass , Braque used wood grain wallpaper in a literal manner, to represent the texture and color of wood. Two strips of wallpaper placed in the upper part of the papier colle denote the wood paneling (or perhaps faux bois wallpaper?) on the wall of the cafe, while a third strip placed horizontally at the lower edge signifies the cafe table or, more specifically, the drawer of the table. Yet the pieces of paper that suggest the paneling of the back wall refuse to remain in the distance, since they are plainly visible as flat elements lying on top of the paper support and on the same forward plane as the drawer. For Braque, the wood grain paper undermines spatial relations, can be both figure and ground at once, and is conceived as a sign for material substance independently of its location in space. © 18 Sep 1995

In seguito studiò all'Accademia di belle arti, dove conobbe Othon Friesz e Raoul Duffy.
