He moved to Paris in 1900 to study where he was drawn to the work of the Fauve artists, including Matisse Derain and Dufy , as well as the late landscapes of . Meeting Picasso marked a huge turning point in Braque's development and together they evolved as leaders of Cubism . After a brief interlude in which he was called up to fight in the First World War, Braque's style developed in the direction he was to follow for the rest of his life. In establishing the principle that a work of art should be autonomous and not merely imitate nature, Cubism redefined art in the twentieth century. Braque's large compositions incorporated the Cubist aim of representing the world as seen from a number of different viewpoints. Omdat zijn vader huisschilder was volgde ook Georges in eerste instantie een opleiding tot huisschilder, maar later ging hij toch naar de Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Parijs . In 1908 vond Braque aansluitng bij de kunstenaarsbeweging Les Fauves . In Antwerpen schilderde Braque scènes van de haven. Het werk van Braque inspireerde Vauxelles om de term kubisme te gebruiken. Met het kubisme wordt bedoeld dat de vorm niet meer direct in verhouding staat tot de werkelijkheid. Het kubisme is daardoor een stap in de richting van de abstracte schilderkunst. In het werk van Braque worden tegelijkertijd de kleuren minder sterk; hij gebruikt voornamelijk witte, bruine, en grijze tinten, met hoogstens wat olijfgroen of geel. Braque werkte ook met collage achtige afbeeldingen, net of bijvoorbeeld een stuk krantenpapier op het doek is geplakt, met teksten en al. Braque schilderde graag stillevens met vruchten, muziekinstrumenten en flessen, waarbij hij ook letters en cijfers toevoegde.

Life then becomes a perpetual revelation. That is true poetry." George Braque. George Braque was born in Argenteuil, a Seine-side village near Paris. Both his father and grandfather were skilled artists. In 1890 the family moved to Le Havre where Braque led quite a solitary childhood. He went to the local Ecole des Beaux-Arts but failed his exams in 1899, leaving his parents to apprentice their son to a local painter-decorator. In Paris Braque gained a craftsman's diploma and through a friendship with Raoul Dufy and Othon Friesz became involved in the Fauvist movement. The work that Braque produced in collaboration with Picasso is varied in quality though impressive in the radical experiments with technique. Despite working closely together, their approaches were quite different with Braque proving more considered and Picasso more spontaneous. Braque was also concerned with representing a subject in his own way, conveying more than just the image before him. He constantly struggled with the use of colour in regard to form, and it was only after designing a series of stained-glass windows in 1953 that he finally reconciled the two as can be seen in 'The Studio VIII' (1954-1955). He was a quiet man but his reputation was such that he received many accolades during his lifetime and was accorded the greatest honour of all in a state funeral.

Heel zijn omgeving helpt hem om schilder te worden. Moving to Paris from his family home in Le Havre in 1900, he met artists such as Henri Matisse, André Derain and Raoul Dufy. During the winter of 1906-07, Braque went to the south of France, where he immersed himself with the landscapes of Paul Cézanne and the colors of the Fauves. Shedding the emphasis on bright, disharmonious Fauve color by 1908, Braque became more interested in volume and structure, strongly influenced by Cézanne . He met Pablo Picasso at this time, and together they developed Cubism, a revolution in painting that redefined art in the 20th century. In fact, the term ´Cubism´ was applied by a critic to a painting by Braque exhibited in 1909 at the Salon d´Automne. Braque entered the army, went to fight in the First World War, and was wounded. When he returned, he began painting in a new style that reflected Cubism but with a new sense of volumetric form and a distinctive brown-black palette. He followed this basic style for the rest of his life, primarily applied to the tabletop. Towards the end of his life, Braque created a series of monumental paintings based on scenes of his studio. George Braque George Braque nepatøí k umìlcùm, o jejichž životì by se dal napsat román. Jeho životní i umìlecké osudy jsou právì ve srovnání s Picassem nedramatické a prosté. Byl vysoký, štíhlý, pøitom ramenatý, ponìkud zamlklý a pøemýšlivý. Malování poznal doma, u svého otce a dìdeèka, kteøí byli nedìlními malíøi. Sám studoval krátce v Le Havru a v Paøíži a ve svých dvaadvaceti letech nastupuje dráhu svobodného umìlce. V Paøíži se seznamuje s malbou impresionistù a postimpresionistù, je okouzlen fauvisty, s jejichž výtvarným projevem se na nìjaký èas ztotožní. K návštìvì Picassova ateliéru a seznámení s proslulým obrazem Avignonské sleèny dochází v r.1907, oba umìlci se brzy nato sbližují lidsky i umìlecky, aby po nìkolik let pracovali v tìsném spoleèenství a vzájemném ovlivòování. V této plodné spolupráci prochází jejich kubismus analytickým a syntetickým obdobím. Ve tøicátých letech prochází Braquova malba obdobím neoklasicismu, tehdy taká ilustruje Hésidovu Theogonii V pozdních letech se vždy znovu vrací k námìtu zátiší, èasto v prostøedí svého ateliéru, lyrické nostalgické atmosféry, kultivovaného malíøského pøednesu a proèištìné barevnosti.
