AN INTRODUCTION TO WILLIAM BLAKE by Alfred Kazin The real man, the imagination. I n 1827 there died, undoubtedly unknown to each other, two plebeian Europeans of supreme originality: Ludwig van Beethoven and William Blake. Had they known of each other, they could still not have known how much of the future they contained and how alike they were in the quality of their personal force, their defiance of the age, and the fierce demands each had made on the human imagination. It is part of the story of Blake's isolation from the European culture of his time that he could have known of Beethoven, who enjoyed a reputation in the London of the early 1800's. The Ninth Symphony was in fact commissioned by the London Philharmonic, who made Beethoven's last days a little easier. The artistic society of the day was appreciative of Beethoven. It ignored the laborious little engraver, shut off by his work and reputed madness, who was known mainly to a few painters, and held by most of them to be a charming crank. Beethoven's isolation was different. He was separated from society by his deafness, his pride, his awkward relations with women, relatives, patrons, inadequate musicians. He was isolated, as all original minds are, by the need to develop absolutely in his own way. The isolation was made tragic, against his will, by his deafness and social pride. At the same time he was one of the famous virtuosos of Europe, the heir of Mozart and the pupil of Haydn, and the occasional grumpy favorite of the musical princes of Vienna. His isolation was an involuntary personal tragedy, as it was by necessity a social fact. He did not resign himself to it, and only with the greatest courage learned to submit to it. If he was solitary, it was in a great tradition. As he was influenced by his predecessors, so he became the fountainhead of the principal musical thought that came after him.

Back to Home Page or Contents Page or People or Index Blake, William (1757-1827) A s one of the most curious and significant figures in the history od English literature, Blake is renown as a poet, mystic , painter and engraver. With these talents he influenced both literature and graphic arts. His mystical abilities appeared in childhood when he began experiencing visions of angels and spiritual monks, later on these visions included the Angel Gabriel, the Virgin Mary, and other historical figures. It might be thought, as so often happens, that his parents would have discouraged him from these thoughts, but they did not. His parents and relatives were of humble people. Although Blake is a common Irish name, the family's ancestry is dubious. Later the poet W. B. Yeats , an ardent devotee of Blake and editor of his literary works, would have it believed that Blake came directly from Irish ancestry, but this is contradicted by Martin J. Blake in his genealogical work, Blake Family Records Blake, born in London, spent most of his life there. Since his parents knew of his early visions they offered to help him to become a painter. Blake was attracted to the position but generously pointer out that such an apprenticeship would be costly, and such an expense would not be fair to his other brothers and sisters, since his father's income as a hosier was not a large one. He entered the apprenticeship as an engraver, not just that the training was less expensive, but also because the profession was likely to yield a faster return.

Glossary entry for Blake, William The following extract is taken from the William Blake home page William Blake (b. Nov. 28, 1757, London d. Aug. 12, 1827, London) was the first of the great English Romantic poets, as well as a painter, engraver and printer. Blake is frequently referred to as a mystic, but this is not really acurate. He deliberately wrote in the style of the Hebrew prophets and envisioned his works as expressions of prophecy, following in the footsteps (or, more precisely strapping on the sandles) of Elijah and Milton. The image shown here is one of Blake's most famous, titled "The Ancient of Days", which also happens to be the title of a Van Morrison song. The relief etching with watercolour appeared as the frontispiece to Blake's Europe: A Prophecy of 1794. Blake did not give the image a title; as Martin Butler ( The Paintings and Drawings of William Blake , 1981) writes It was J.T. Snow [ Nollekens and his Times , 1828] who first called this design "The Ancient of Days", relating it to Proverbs, viii, 27, but Blake's meaning is closer to that of this own Urizen , 1794, where, on plate 20, Urizen 'formed golden compasses And began to explore the Abyss'. The Creator is equated with Urizen, whose rational and materialist creation of the world excludes imagination.

The William Blake Art Archive A short biography about William Blake and his art works. Blake held an exihibit or two during this time, but unfortunately, he attracted very little interest from the public at large. In fact, for a large portion of his life he lived just barely above poverty. Blake's fame and public recognition, ironically, were to come at the very end of and after his life when he obtained the support of the painter John Linnell who commissioned a seris of watercolor designs to be published in engraving form from Dante's Divine Comedy as well as the famous Illustrations for the book of Job. Sadly, at the time of his death very few of these works were actually engraved in final form. Blake died August 12, 1987 in London England.
