Oswald Birley (1880-1952)
The following information comes from the pages of the Charleston Manor collection of Birley's works. Sir Oswald Birley was born in New Zealand on the 31st March 1880 son of Hugh Francis and Elizabeth Birley, a Lancashire family of the Mount, St. Asaph, North Wales. He later attended a traditional education at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge. He turned to painting whilst studying the Old Masters in Dresden and Florence and enrolled in the Academie Julien in Paris where he studied under the Beaux Arts trained master Marcel Basschet In Paris he came under the influence of such painters as Bourguereau and his example and the proficiency which academic artists achieved in the late 19th century show in his earliest exhibited work, the superlative full-length nude which earned it's young painter an honourable mention in the Paris Salon of 1903. After Paris Birley travelled in Spain and like many others fell under the influence of Velasquez and the golden age of Spanish painting. His "Rag Sorter" exhibited in 1905 and portraits of Mabel Beardsley as an Elizabethan page exhibited in 1915 exemplify this and also show the close affinity to Sargent which most of Birley's pre-work demonstrates. On his return to London we find him at the St. John's Wood School of Art in the company of such artists as William Orpen and James Pride: Birley's tour-de-force "Interior of James Pride's Studio" is particularly reminiscent of Orpen's compositions. Glyn Philpot was another painter strongly influenced by Sargent, and working during this period in a similar vein to Birley.

Annual Sir Robert Birley Memorial Lecture - 2002
In 2002 the lecture was given by Frances Cairncross, Chair, Economic and Social Research Council , titled Social Sciences: What Future? The lecture was featured in Podium in the Independent on Friday 15 March 2002. I met Sir Robert Birley, in whose honour this lecture is named, only once, at the very end of his long life. He was a tall, gaunt figure, who looked like a cross between God and Ghandi. He must have been an awe-inspiring headmaster of Eton. Several of my colleagues on The Economist were there during his time, and one remembers how, as a young teenager, he would watch Birley’s enormous shoes stride up the aisle in chapel every day. But Birley’s interests were even more impressive than his mighty feet. He was a historian, of course, and interested in education; he worked mightily for South Africa, using his practical skills as a teacher to combat the evil of apartheid; and he was the first head of department in social sciences and humanities here at City University. So I hope he would have been interested in what I propose to talk about tonight. However, he might have shared the view of A.H.Halsey, that shrewd historian of social policy. When I described the title of my speech tonight to him, he said briskly, "I wouldn’t undertake it, if I were you." He’s quite right, of course. I wish I’d called it something more modest, such as "A user’s perspective". But my rash choice has at least given me the chance to think about where the social sciences are at the moment, and in particular, how well they serve users.

Of particular interest in this room is the bed housed here. It was in this very bed that George II died. King George V and Queen Mary stayed here in 1933.
The ceiling in this bedroom, like many others was painted by Louis Laguerre
The room also houses two paintings by Sir Peter Lely (1618-80): The Rape of Europa and Portrait of Eleanor Needham, Lady Byron. There are also paintings by Luca Giordano: Flight into Egypt, pictured below and Venus and Adonis attributed to Simon Vouet partially visible in the same image.

    Collections and their connections!
The First Lord Fairhaven (1869 -1966) was primarily responsible for all one sees today at Anglesey. He was actively collecting for; and improving the site, between 1930 and the time of his death in 1966. As a result the National Trust now cares for a site that is of great interest to many people on a variety of levels. The gardens for example are the site of one of the largest collections of statuary and sculpture in the country, comprising of 104 individual pieces. Lord Fairhavens' almost fanatical collecting habits are well represented inside the house as well. In fact as one traces some of the themes that run through what can only be described as an 'eclectic' collection, you can start to build up an image of the man himself…. The contents of Anglesey span 9 Centuries of history. The earliest items being those form the original occupants of the site, the Augustinian monks of the 12 th Century, these include a 'quern' . This is a small hand operated grinding machine used for milling flour. Although being functional, it is decorated around the top in the form of a sleeping fox. The collection contains numerous examples of 20 th Century art. The above Painting of the 'First Lord Fairhaven in full military dress' by Sir Oswald Birley (1925) is a prime example. In additon, when the house was extensively re-furbished under Lord Fairhaven, the most up to date soft furnishings, fixtures and fittings were used. Consequently Anglesey is good place to view interior design of the English

This magnificent building overlooks the River Dart and the sea, and is set in 126 ares of landscaped grounds. It is now the principal facility in the UK for the training young naval officers for not only the Royal Navy but also many other nations. The stunning Edwardian architecture, internal and external, designed by Sir George Aston Webb, contain numerous beautiful features linking it to both Royalty and Admiralty. The Quarterdeck with its high vaulted ceiling, is surrounded by the-finest wrought ironwork of the Poop Deck gallery which leads to the Commodore's Flat containing a unique and complete collection of Second World War naval portraits by Sir Oswald Birley. The Main Corridor, the second longest in Europe, takes you from the beautiful Chapel and its memorial side chapels at one end to the splendour of the Senior Gunroom (SGR) at the other. The hand-painted and gold leaf bosses of the SGR ceiling took seven months to complete and compliment the finest portraits of Admirals that line its oak-paneled walls. From the Lobby, the great doors open with views across the Bridge, Parade Ground, past the Flagstaff and to the mouth of the river with its castles and beyond to the open sea. 2000 also saw the opening of a new Museum by Prince Philip whilst celebrating the 60th anniversary of his time at Dartmouth; a time when he met, the then, Princess Elizabeth for the first occasion in the gardens of the Commodore's residence. This small yet fine Museum has collected together many pictures and artifacts showing the history of BRNC from its beginnings in 1863 as two vessels moored in the River Dart, through the opening in 1905 of today's College. It gives an insight into the ever-evolving way of life and training of naval officers to meet the defence requirements of the time.
