He returned to New Bedford the following summer. In April 1859 Bierstadt was one of several artists and photographers who joined Colonel Frederick Lander's expedition to find a suitable rail route from the Mississippi to the Pacific Coast. An unforgettable experience for him, it would be the first of many such treks the artist would take to the then vast, largely uncharted, and sparsely settled American West. That first-hand witness to the frontier provided a principal source of subject matter for the remainder of Bierstadt's life. In fact it was 1864, the year following his second western journey, that he painted the Hunter Museum's fine oil, Across the Prairie , which depicts an autumn scene on the Great Plains. To the left of the picture, cottonwood trees rise above the bank of a tranquil stream that winds forward from the center rear depth . A warm light pervades the entire vista as a setting sun near the middle of the composition glows golden through the diffusion of clouds. The sky seems particularly large and the distances great owing in part to the low horizon line. Delicate touches of paint dot the foreground and represent grasses and flowers.

Artistic Resources for the art lover ALBERT BIERSTADT From the vast vistas of California's Sierra Nevada Mountains to that of Colorado's Rockies, landscape painter Albert Bierstadt had the abilty to bring forth the peaceful beauty of nature to every canvas he covered. Born in Germany in 1830, Bierstadt came to the United States at the age of two. As a young man, he returned to Germany, where he studied painting for three years at the prestigious Dusseldorf Akademie. When he returned finally in 1857, he began painting landscapes of the northeastern United States. Upon hearing of the beauty of the west, in 1858 Bierstadt was able to join a surveying expedition to make the first of several trips to the west. Returning with many sketches and oil studies, he set to work in his New York studio to create the first of the huge carefully detailed oil panoramas he became famous for. His sweeping portrayals of western natural scenery became the standard of his day for how many viewed the beauty of the west. He approached his subject in an almost exaggerated look that romaticized the grandeur of the rugged mountains, waterfalls, and pristine lakes emphasizing the atmospheric effects of fog and clouds to enhance the overall work. A very good example of this can be seen in his dramatic portrayal Mountains in the Mist (1863; Metropolitan Museum, New York). Even in his day, Bierstadt became one of the premiere and most respected painters of the mid 1800's.

Two of these works, Sunset in the Yosemite Valley and Looking up the Yosemite Valley are frequently reproduced in books and magazines Two other Yosemite scenes entitled Yosemite Valley and In the Yosemite Valley join these popular works. Lionberger Davis A Ithough it is a small sketch, this work should be recognized as one of the talismanic paintings of the West. It probably records the shocking spatial disorientation triggered by seeing the endless plains and mountain ranges of the West for the first time. The wagon, the horses, and the rider are suspended in space somewhere in the open-ended plains. Except for the continuous mountains, there are no markers by which to measure anythingno wagon tracks, hoofprints, bushes, compositional diagonals, or zigzags. The travelers move through a land without leaving a trace and are unable to measure easily the miles they have traversed. There is no possibility of determining the yardage to the grazing animals except by means of atmospheric color; proximity and distance are based on clarity of contour and color alone. Ironically, this, too, is disorienting, since one can see both more and farther in the clear air of wilderness than in the polluted air of towns and cities. For Bierstadt, the plains were probably impossible to organize into compositional units, a factor that might explain his preference for mountain-valley themes. A generation ago, this type of landscape might have been termed "alienated," since the artist refused to organize and control it. Today we are more interested in process and mechanistic explanations and might call it a "nonstructured" or "nonspatialized" space. This kind of open composition was used later, in the late 1860s and after, in western paintings by Worthington Whittredge and John Kensett; Whittredge traveled west in 1866 and 1870, and Kensett in about 1856-57, 1868, and 1870.
