See also: Hudson River School VIEW IMAGE LIST "Albert Bierstadt was among the most energetic, industrious, and internationally honored American artists of the nineteenth century. Born in humble circumstances in Solingen, Germany, he emigrated at age two to America with his parents and his two brothers. The family settled in New Bedford, Massachusetts, where his father became established as a barrelmaker. Little is known about Bierstadt's rearing or early artistic training, but he was advertising himself as an instructor in monochromatic painting in New Bedford in 1850, the same year he exhibited thirteen of those works and one drawing in Boston. His collaboration during the next three years with a daguerreotypist who produced theatrical presentations of American scenery laid the foundation for his lifelong interests in photography and North American topography. Albert Bierstadt American, born Germany, 1830-1902 Storm on the Matterhorn oil on canvas 53 3/4 x 82 1/2 inches Gift of Mrs. Ben Gallagher, 1966.620 (click for enlarged image - 25k) Lander to survey a wagon road from Fort Laramie, Wyoming, to the Pacific. In 1860 he exhibited the first of his Rocky Mountain landscapes at the National Academy of Design in New York, winning immediate election to that body. Thus encouraged, he made subsequent trips into the American West in 1863, 1866, and 1872, laying the foundations for large-scale canvases that proved to be enormously popular with the public and brought record prices. Bierstadt traveled widely in Europe and received numerous awards from several foreign governments. By the early 1880s, however, styles in art began to change and galleries in Europe and America exhibited fewer of Bierstadt's panoramic views. Based on sketches he made during one of his trips abroad, Storm on the Matterhorn was completed in 1886 in New York and amply demonstrates the artist's love of the sublime as well as the technical skill and imaginative power that so greatly appealed to the viewers of his day.

Albert Bierstadt Yosemite Valley - 1866 Dialogue by Mark: Reptiles live in nearly every natural habitat in the world, from deserts to jungles to the open ocean. You would be able to find rock-hopping lizards in the landscape shown in today's Masters' Gallery...probably basking in the sun on the rocks by the river. Kim Solga, our biologist of art history, found us this beautiful painting by the American artist Albert Bierstadt at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Along with the gold rush, trappers and explorers, and settlers moving west in covered wagons, it was also popular for artists to travel out into the frontier to paint the spectacular scenery of the American west. Albert Bierstadt is one of the most fameous of these artists. He journeyed into the mountains and the wilderness, carrying his paints and canvases by horseback. He even came north to paint Mount Shasta, the huge volcano in northern California where KidsAret and Kim, our resident art hsitorian, live. This painting is titled Yosemite Valley, created by Bierstadt on location when he visited this incredible valley in the high Sierras. The towering cliffs make the two people and their horse appear tiny. Then the towering clouds make the cliffs themselves seem small. Notice how Bierstadt painted the clouds, with light streaming down between the huge thunderheads. The light falls in patches on the landscape, lighting up some areas brightly and leaving other parts in shadow.

Albert Bierstadt Albert Bierstadt was born near Dusseldorf and brought to America when he was two years old. The family settled in the Massachusetts whaling town of New Bedford. Very early on, the young Albert showed a talent for drawing, and by the time he was twenty, had decided firmly on an artistic career. Although his parents were poor, they honored his determination and sent him to his native Dusseldorf for an extended training period. During his four years abroad, he kept a sketchbook and did innumerable drawings of soaring mountains which held such a fascination for him and which were particularly spectacular in the area of his travels. ALBERT BIERSTADT Albert Bierstadt, a German landscape artist, migrated to the United States in 1832 with his parents. He took as his subject matter the vast mountains of North America. His work was exhibited in Boston, and shortly after that he returned to Germany in 1853 to study at the Dusseldorf Akademie. He returned to the United States in 1857 and began traveling the West in 1858. He created his paintingsi in his New York studio from sketches and oil studies that he completed during his trips to the West. Albert Bierstadt Near Salt Lake City, Utah, This view of the Salt Lake Valley was painted from a vantage point similar to Bierstadt's southeast view but looks west toward the Oquirrh Mountains. Albert Bierstadt is credited with helping to formulate the Rocky Mountain School of painting, described as the Hudson River School gone west. In Near Salt Lake City, Utah, elements of the Hudson River School are evident in the more tightly painted foreground, which then gives way to a distant vista. However, the Rocky Mountain landscape tradition is apparent in the boundless panoramic view, void of enframing trees. As with the painting Salt Lake City, Wasatch Mountains, Uinta Range, several of the artist's biographers have suggested this work was done during his second trip west in 1863. Certain aspects of this painting make this unlikely, specifically the mature trees in the foreground and poplar trees in the middle distance, which were not evident in the valley before the 1870s. One attempt by a scholar to substantiate the date of 1863 for this painting included the use of a quotation from John Erasmus Lester's book of 1873, From the Atlantic to the Pacific.
