The book contains 180 illustrations with 100 in color but this book really is more a biography and less an exhibition of his work. Having said that, the story is not just his but also very much the story of the earliest American Impressionists. A careful study of Benson's paintings in this book shows elements of his colleagues Whistler, Sargent, and Cassatt. But I also see works like "Hunter in a Boat" and watercolors like "Salmon River in Canada" that strongly suggest Winslow Homer. William Gerdts in the introduction to the book wrote, "Frank Benson painted some of the most beautiful pictures ever executed by an American artist." Studying this book and relishing the exquisite paintings in it helps one to understand those highly complimentary words. Although Bedford's title, "Frank W. Benson, American Impressionist" suggests an emphasis on his impressionist work, the book also shows other painting styles. During his lifetime Benson won most of the awards any artist could. Reading the book enables one to understand clearly why.

Frank W. Benson A member of the Ten American Painters and an important figure in the Boston School, Frank W. Benson was one of the first American artists to combine the figure with the Impressionist landscape. His images of women and children in sunlit meadows and hillsides established Impressionism as a major style of painting in America. These works are among the most beloved American Impressionist canvases today. Benson is also known for his indoor figural depictions which convey the quiet contemplative spirit of the genteel age and for paintings, etchings, and watercolors of sporting subjects, especially of fishing and hunting, which he rendered in the later portion of his career. Benson's fame and financial success lasted throughout his professional life. He was one of the most popular artists of his era, and today his paintings are widely reproduced and considered among the most beautiful works in American public and private collections. Born in Salem, Massachusetts, Benson was a descendant of a family that had settled in Salem during the Revolutionary era and had prospered in the maritime trade. He grew up in privileged circumstances, engaging in sporting activities of tennis, fishing, and hunting, which he enjoyed for the rest of his life. On his return home in 1885, Benson rented a studio in Salem, Massachusetts and began to exhibit at the Boston Art Club and the National Academy of Design in New York. In spring or fall of 1887, he taught at the Portland School of Art in Maine. In the next year, he moved his studio to Boston and was married to Ellen Peirson, a childhood friend. Although the couple settled in Salem, much of Benson's life revolved around the Boston art world after he became an instructor at the Museum of Fine Arts School in Boston in 1889. Along with Tarbell, who began to teach there at the same time, Benson helped to establish the school as one of the outstanding art instruction facilities in the United States.

This volume is identified at the Kansas State Historical Society as microfilm LM195. It is a two-part volume 3. Joseph Benson Prose farmer resident of Vinton county, Ohio; Benjamin H., born in September, 1853, is a prominent farmer and stockman in Vinton county, Ohio; Joseph Benson is the next in order of birth; and Ottomar, born in 1866, is a live-stockman at Circleville, Ohio. Joseph Benson Prose was educated at Ohio University, Athens, Ohio. Deciding to make the legal profession his line of endeavor he began to read law in 1882. In 1885 he came to Kansas and located first at Great Bend. He had earned his own way through the university by teaching and continued in that profession six years after coming to Kansas. He was admitted to the bar at Larned, Kan., in 1887, and in 1891 took up the active practice of law at Hoisington, Kan., at which time he entered upon a career of intrepid endeavor which has been well rewarded with success. The same strength of determination and force of character which enabled him persistently to pursue the desired education and to fit himself for the profession of his choice, in spite of untoward circumstances, have also been valuable concomitants of his subsequent legal career. He has been admitted to practice in all the courts, both state and federal.

Frank W. Benson American Benson was born in Salem, Massachusetts and studied at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School and the Academie Julien, Paris. He is one of the supreme beings in the etching of waterfowl, whether in tidal flats, marshes, ponds, or flight. No other artist has approached him in the ability to capture wild fowl with etching needle and the copper plate. Benson took up etching when he was 50 years old and designed the second Duck Stamp for the United States Department of Interior when he was 73 years old. He had almost immediate financial success as an etcher. His personal profit from the sale of etchings had averaged about $80,000. a year, before the economic depression. Affectionately known as the "Dean of American Etchers," he needled over 300 plates and was a member of the National Academy and Society of American Etchers.
