Frank W. Benson Benson's most impressionistic work was done between 1895 and 1910. The sun-filled plein air paintings of his daughters in their gauzy summer frocks depict idealized young creatures in a carefree world. In 1897, Benson, Tarbell, and fellow Bostonian Joseph de Camp left the increasingly conservative Society of American Painters and helped found the Ten American Painters. The Ten was a stylistically heterogeneous group, but all were to some degree touched by the impressionism of the age and moved to exhibit in a more intimate environment than the Salon system offered. They continued to exhibit together for more than twenty years, and eight of their number are represented in the current show. After 1915, Benson began to devote much of his attention to printmaking. An avid sportsman, he created etchings of waterfowl and duck hunting which were influenced by the bold asymmetry of Japanese paints. Still Life is a late work (about 1926) strongly designed and richly painted. It is a large canvas with a complex but strongly unified arrangement of objects, which as the catalogue remarks, "recall the grandeur of old-master paintings."

He hunted grouse and woodcock and fished for salmon and trout in New England and eastern Canada. He painted and etched what he observed first-hand. so his renderings vividly capture the action. This is a gorgeous book that features full color oil and watercolor sporting paintings showing waterfowl and upland bird scenes, along with salmon and trout fishing paintings. Benson was also famous for his etchings and dry points. This book contains reproductions of many of them. Benson '31 Provenance the artist private collection Note FRANK WESTON BENSON (1862-1951) Benson made his first trip to Dublin at the urging of his friend Joseph Lindon Smith, a Boston-based painter who had been coming to the area since the late 1880s. However, he was also friendly with the aforementioned Thayer, a well-known painter of portraits, landscapes, and idealized female figures who began making seasonal visits to Dublin in 1888 and moved there permanently in 1901. In addition to sharing a love of art, both men were avid outdoorsmen, with Thayer, in particular, possessing a special reverence for nature; extant correspondence between the two artists revealed that they went on hiking, fishing, and hunting expeditions together, during which time they would also set their camp stools up next to one another and commence painting, usually portraying the same view.
