Bellini, Giovanni Bellini, Giovanni (1430?-1516). The founder of the Venetian school of painting, Giovanni Bellini raised Venice to a center of Renaissance art that rivaled Florence and Rome. He brought to painting a new degree of realism, a new wealth of subject matter, and a new sensuousness in form and color. Giovanni Bellini was born in Venice, Italy, in about 1430. Little is known about his family. His father, a painter, was a pupil of one of the leading 15th-century Gothic revival artists. Giovanni and his brother probably began their careers as assistants in their father's workshop. In his early pictures, Bellini worked with tempera, combining a severe and rigid style with a depth of religious feeling and gentle humanity. From the beginning he was a painter of natural light. In his earliest pictures the sky is often reflected behind human figures in streaks of water that make horizontal lines in narrow strips of landscape. The Agony in the Garden was the first of a series of Venetian landscape scenes that continued to develop for the next century. FICHA Nacionalidad: Italia (1429) - Venecia (1516) Estilo: Renacimiento Italiano Discípulo de su propio padre, según la usanza del arte de la época, fue a su vez el maestro de dos grandes genios: Giorgione y Tiziano . Giovanni fue apodado el Giambellino, en referencia a la belleza y sensibilidad con la que trabajaba sus pinturas. Actuó frecuentemente con su hermano Gentile , también magnífico pintor; ambos forman parte de la Escuela renacentista veneciana , en la cual tomó una importante parte la ola de renovación espiritual que trataba de contrarrestar el supuesto paganismo del Renacimiento . Es por esta razón que Giovanni se decantó con frecuencia por la temática religiosa en vez de la mitología clásica. Junto a Gentile, trabajó en la decoración al fresco de las Scuolas venecianas. Pero además de su hermano y de su padre, Jacopo, recibió otras influencias. La más crucial vino por parte de su cuñado, que era nada menos que Mantegna . De él aprendió el dominio del dibujo y la rotundidad del volumen, aunque en cualquier caso el Giambellino hacía honor a su apodo, realizando pinturas de mayor lirismo que las de su cuñado. También Antonello da Messina , que estuvo en Venecia, le proporcionó modelos de referencia que él aprovechó con grandes resultados: la técnica del óleo , la linealidad de raíz flamenca frente al colorismo veneciano, nuevas iconografías que renovaron su repertorio... Giacomo Bellini had worked under Gentile da Fabriano in his native city and at Florence. He had also been employed at other places, especially at Padua, where he came under the influence of the classic and plastic tendencies of Squarcione. Giovanni Bellini Bernini was the pre-eminent baroque artist, who worked chiefly in Rome. Eminently a sculptor, he was also an architect, painter, draftsman, designer of stage sets, fireworks displays, and funeral trappings. His father Pietro was a well known Mannerist sculptor himself, but Gian Lorenzo soon showed a particular attitude. He soon went to Rome, where his career was run. His first works were inspired by Hellenistic Michelangelo in which the character is preparing for action. The twisted torso and furrowed brow of Bernini's "David" is symptomatic of the baroque's interest in dynamic movement over high Renaissance stasis. Also adept at architecture, he designed the piazza (great square) and colonnade of St Peter's in the Vatican (most famous work). He planned several famous palaces: Palazzo Ludovisi (now Palazzo Montecitorio, 1650) and Palazzo Chigi (1664), in Rome, and made an unexecuted design for the Louvre (presented to Louis XIV in 1665, when Bernini was in Paris). Or he designed some churches, like in Castelgandolfo and in Ariccia (near Rome). One of the small baroque churches in Rome presents an ensemble of Bernini's work: Bernini was responsible not only for the architecture at Sant'Andrea al Quirinale but also the enormous statue of St. Andrew the Apostle over the high altar. The spectacular Fountain of the Four Rivers (1648-51) in the Piazza Navona, Rome, is also a source of anecdotes about his rivalry with Borromini (whose St.Agnes church faces the fountain).
