Aubrey Beardsley - a tribute Online exhibition developed from the exhibition "Aubrey Beardsley and the 1890s - a tribute" curated by Ann Galbally (Reader and Associate Professor, School of Fine Arts, Classical Studies and Archaeology ) and Merete Smith (Rare Books Curator, the University Library This exhibition, using the resources of our Rare Books and Prints collections, seeks to reveal the extraordinary creativity of Aubrey Beardsley and the "Decadents" in terms of book production and illustration. From the perspective of 100 years how can we now view the avant-garde book production of England in the 1890s which claimed the black and white illustrations of Aubrey Beardsley at its apex? Set against a background of the de-stabilising gender politics of the 1890s, it was a decade that produced the so-called "Decadent" writers and artists, whose work combined sexual experimentation with spiritual questing in an intensely creative harness. Each expressed an impulse of the as-yet unborn modernism and much of the creative endeavour of these artists and writers can be interpreted as expressing pre-Freudian archetypes. The challenge of Decadent art Because of the fundamental challenges it posed to accepted standards of the period, much "Decadent" art and literature received a hostile press at the time as can be seen from the pages of

Return to Main Menu of The Camelot Project at the University of Rochester TRISTAN and ISOLT Tristan and Isolt are second only to Lancelot and Guinevere as the great lovers of the Arthurian legends. The story of their tragic love has been the subject of numerous medieval and modern retellings. The medieval versions of the story are sometimes divided into two branches, called the courtly and the common versions. The former is represented by the Tristan of the Anglo-Norman poet Thomas, which was written in the latter part of the twelfth century. His version in turn influenced Gottfried von Strassburg, whose Tristan , written in the first decade of the thirteenth century, is one of the great romances of the Middle Ages, and the Old Norse Tristrams saga Roman de Tristran , which like Eilhart von Oberge's Middle High German Tristrant , also written in the late twelfth century, has some elements considered less than courtly. For example, the love potion in these versions is of limited duration; and Isolt is turned over by Mark to a colony of lepers as punishment for her infidelity. I was polite, well-spoken, listened to classical music, read everything I could find by H. P. Lovecraft, could make a perfect hollandaise, did some calligraphy and dabbled in art. Encouraged by an indulgent family that believed I had real talent (and overlooked my strangeness in gratitude that I wasn't an obvious druggie, impregnator or other bad teen stereotype) I spent endless hours in my room trying to imitate the beautiful illuminated manuscripts of medieval Europe...and later, in an artistic "180" (or was it?), the spare, black-and-white arabesques of the great Art Nouveau artist, Aubrey Beardsley. His lines sometimes suggest much more than they literally depict, hinting at secret things. He plays with horizons and perspectives, flattening 3D imagery into haunting and gracefully off-kilter 2D. His book illustrations often have no relation to the text, being more his flights of fancy than the author's intent (he valued his own opinion very highly). His worlds are populated with unhappy people, satyrs, dwarfs, fetuses, other vague or explicit living aberrations...no one and nothing appears to smile, except cruelly. There is sinuous, beautiful wickedness in his art...he was controversial in his day and more than a century later, much of his work still has the power to shock the Prim and Proper set. His friend Arthur Symons wrote of his work:
