orn to middle-class parents in 1872, Aubrey Beardsley grew up beneath the looming shadow of tuberculosis. Perhaps it was that threat of early demise which created from a frail and awkward young man a manically prolific artist who, despite his brief 26 years, managed to carve out for himself not only a place amidst the artistic bohemian elite of the time but a permanent niche amidst the revolutionaries of art.
Although he received what amounted to almost no training in art, Beardsley's first assignment came early in life with Malory's Le Morte D'Arthur, a popular version of the Arthurian legends. The young artist was still enamored with his Pre-Raphaelite idols and heavily applied to the illustrations Burne-Jones' medieval thoughtfulness, delicate profiles, and intricate scroll-work. Yet already his chapter headings were populated with dumb-founding cameo appearances from satyrs, nymphs, and other woodland creatures most certainly not of Arthurian origin. Further, his idea of an adventurous knight was not that of a bearded, burly male but of a slender, effeminate youth.
The illustrations, despite their caprices, were well-received and young Aubrey's portfolio didn't go unnoticed by critics and peers alike. His Parisian connection with Oscar Wilde's circle of acquaintances lead to the creation of a series of drawings for Salome, Wilde's only play written in French. Already dismissive of his early English mentors and taken by the delicate art of Japan so popularized by James McNeill Whistler, Beardsley fled the medieval wood for flat and nearly abstract arrangements of sensuous figures: all this much to the annoyance of the play's author, who requested "Byzantine" drawings and was probably equally unimpressed with Aubrey's caricatures of Wilde (among them the round face of the full moon and Herod's court jester with a copy of the play in hand).

Biographical Sketch
Aubrey Vincent Beardsley was born in Brighton on 21 August 1872 and early showed artistic ability, acting and playing in concerts with his sister Mabel and producing drawings of recognized merit. The Beardsley family's means were modest, and by 1888 Aubrey had quit school to work as a clerk. At the age of nineteen Aubrey Beardsley embarked on a career as an illustrator, and with the encouragement of Pierre Puvis de Chavannes in France and Joseph Pennell in England he quickly made a name for himself. His fame was ensured with the publication of the Dent edition of Malory's LE MORTE DARTHUR in 1892, and by the following year the "Beardsley boom" was in full flower. During 1897 Aubrey Beardsley's health continued to decline as serious work became increasingly difficult and his creative output dwindled. His death occurred at Menton, France, on 16 March 1898. Adolphe Gladstone Millott Severn was a British physician as well as a student and collector of Beardsley.

The Art of Aubrey Beardsley
A Gallery of his Drawings
Aubrey Beardsley's art has gone in and out of fashion many times over the last century. But there is no doubt he has had a lasting impression on many artists who followed him. His life was a brief one. Born in 1872, he achieved fame early, but was dead by age tewntyfive. His drawings were not mere illustrations, but formed an integral part of the English Aesthetic Movement and are best understood in this context. "The Dancer's Reward"
( 570 x 671 / 14 k / gif) This drawing was one of Beardsley's illustrations for the English translation of Oscar Wilde's Salome , published by Elkin Mathews and John Lane, London, 1894. Wilde's work was originally published in a French edition to circumvent English prudishness. The Yellow Book , cover art, Vol. I, April 1894.
( 384 x 511 x 256 / 10 k / gif) The Yellow Book has been referred to as the quintessential periodical of the 1890's in England. Beardsley served as art editor of this avant-garde literary journal from its inception in April 1894, until he was dismissed a year later. This was the time of Oscar Wilde's arrest and conviction for homosexual practices and Beardsley, quite unfairly, was seen as having to close a link with Wilde. "Mrs. Patrick Campbell"

Visitors Since 8/26/97 Aubrey Beardsley was the most controversial artist of the Art Nouveau era, renowned for his dark and perverse images and the grotesque erotic themes which he explored in his later work. Beardsley was a close friend of Oscar Wilde and did illustrations and stage designs for Wilde's play Salome . He also did extensive illustrations for books and magazines, including William Morris' edition of Le Morte Arthur and magazines like The Savoy and The Studio . Beardsley's most famous erotic illustrations were on themes of history and mythology, including his illustrations for Lysistrata and Salome . Beardsley was also a characiturist and even did some political cartoons, mirroring Wilde's irreverant wit in art. Beardsley's work reflected the decadence of his era and his influence was enormous, clearly visible in the work of the French Symbolists, the Poster Art Movement of the 1890s and the work of many later-period Art Nouveau artists like Pape, Mucha and Clarke. Some of Beardsley's images are a bit too bizarre to just show on our page - but for those who are interested in something a bit stranger, click here for a particularly odd image in a higher resolution:

Art Nouveau
"An international style of decoration and architecture which developed in the 1880s and 1890s. The name derives from the Maison de l'Art Nouveau , an interior design gallery opened in Paris in 1896, but in fact the movement had different names throughout Europe. In Germany it was known as 'Jugendstil', from the magazine Diejugend (Youth) published from 1896; in Italy 'Stile Liberty' (after the London store, Liberty Style) or 'Floreale'; in Spain 'Modernista', in Austria 'Sezessionstil' and, paradoxically, in France the English term 'Modern Style' was often used, emphasizing the English origins of the movement. "In design Art Nouveau was characterized by writhing plant forms and an opposition to the historicism which had plagued the 19th century. There was a tension implicit throughout the movement between the decorative and the modern which can be seen in the work of individual designers as well as in the chronology of the whole. Its emphasis on decoration and artistic unity links the movement to contemporary Symbolist ideas in art, as seen in the work of the Vienna Secessionists, but the movement was also associated with Arts and Crafts ideas and, as such, Art Nouveau forms a bridge between Morris and Gropius (recognized by Pevsner in his book

"I seldom or never advise anyone to take up art as a profession, but in your case I can do nothing else," another artist told Aubrey Beardsley upon seeing his work in 1891. From a young age, Beardsley displayed a natural aptitude for drawing. Despite little formal training, he devoted his energies to art and produced drawings that revealed broad influences including Greek vase-painting, Japanese prints, French Rococo decoration, and the paintings of Andrea Mantegna. Embarking upon a brief yet brilliant career, Beardsley received a commission to illustrate a new edition of the King Arthur legend in 1893. The following year he became the art editor and illustrator of a new quarterly journal, The Yellow Book . Beardsley's illustrations for Oscar Wilde's celebrated play Salomé earned him his greatest professional acclaim, but his professional association with the flamboyant Wilde led to dismissal from the journal. Beardsley quickly rebounded, however, and became principal illustrator of another new magazine. During this period he also illustrated numerous books and composed poetry and prose. Aware that he was dying of tuberculosis, Beardsley pushed himself to explore new psychological and erotic realms. Ill from the age of seven, he died in Paris at twenty-five.

Beardsley, Aubrey Vincent Beardsley, Aubrey Vincent (1872-1898), English artist, whose sensitive, highly imaginative style and hedonistic, occasionally macabre subject matter place him within the European fin-de-si¨cle artistic movement. In his short life (his productive career spanned only six years), Beardsley achieved a reputation as one of England's most innovative illustrators. Beardsley, born in Brighton, briefly attended the Westminster School of Art in London. Other than this short stint of formal training, he was self-taught. By the age of 20 he was executing art commissions. Characteristic of his work are large areas of black and white, hard, curving lines, rich ornamentation, and disregard of conventional perspective and proportion. Recognizable influences include the great Japanese printmakers and the pre-Raphaelite painters. The fantastic and occasionally erotic nature of his illustrations aroused great controversy. Beardsley was art editor of the celebrated periodical The Yellow Book (1894-1895) and of The Savoy (1896); both of these publications featured his work. He illustrated editions of

Beardsley exemplifies the aesthetic movement in English art of the 1890s (see decadents ).
