See also: Art Nouveau Symbolism VIEW IMAGE LIST Burne-Jones in turn attracted the veneration of Aubrey Beardsley, probably the most remarkable English illustrator of the industrial age. He too was a precocious talent: at the age of fifteen he had illustrated his favourite books (Madame Bovary, Manon Lescaut). By the time of his death at the age of twenty-six (he died of tuberculosis, in Menton, where he had gone in search of a favourable climate), he had made a lasting impact on the art of illustration. It was a field in which a number of outstanding artists were then working, including Walter Crane, co-founder with William Morris of the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society. "It was through Burne-Jones that, in 1891, Beardsley, then aged eighteen, met Oscar Wilde. Wilde was writing his Salome in French (Arthur Douglas subsequently translated it into English), and asked Beardsley to illustrate it. "Beardsley's drawings are admirably suited to the technical possibilities of industrial reproduction. Ambitious and supremely gifted, the young artist developed a perverse and playfully theatrical style partly inspired by Greek vase painting. The venomous elegance of his drawings has an ornamental rhythm akin to the abstract decorations of Islamic palaces. For

by Sir William Rothenstein (1872-1945) As an artist given to satirical drawings, Aubrey Beardsley was well aware of the potential for caricature in his own physical features. Tall and fine-boned, with a slenderness attributable in part to tuberculosis, he chose to exaggerate the eccentricity of his appearance with bohemian styles of dress and haircuts that emphasized the sharp angularity of his face. His published self-portraits made fun simultaneously of the insignificance of his own body, conventional stereotypes of "manliness," his public reputation as a "monstrous" decadent, bourgeois notions of propriety, and contemporary journalism's obsession with images of celebrities as supposed revelations of the "truth" about their personalities. In the most famous of these comic drawings, "Portrait of Himself" for the October 1894 issue of the Yellow Book , Beardsley depicted his tiny, mob-cap-covered head peeking out slyly from bedclothes that looked like a gigantic woman's parted skirt. But in the hands of his friend, the artist William Rothenstein, Beardsley became quite a different sort of subjectbrooding, vulnerable, and melancholyas indeed he often was toward the premature end of his short life.

Raffinierter Jugendstil (1872 - 1898)
März 1898 in Menton. Home Kunstarchiv

Aubrey Beardsley
Aubrey Vincent Beardsley August 21 Brighton England March 16 ... France ) was an influential English artist illustrator , and author. Beardsley was aligned with the Yellow Book coterie of artists and writers, and produced many illustrations for that magazine. He was also aligned closely with Aestheticism , the British counterpart to Decadence and Symbolism . Beardsley's images are usually done in ink, and feature large dark areas contrasted with large blank ones, and areas of fine detail contrasted with areas with none at all. Beardsley illustrated Oscar Wilde 's and produced illustrations for a deluxe edition of Sir Thomas Malory 's Le Morte d'Arthur . Beardsley also wrote Under the Hill , an unfinished erotic tale based loosely on the legend of Beardsley was a public character as well as a private eccentric. He said, "I have one aimthe grotesque. If I am not grotesque I am nothing." Wilde said he had "a face like a silver hatchet, and grass green hair." Beardsley died of tuberculosis at the age of 25, working right up to the end.

The Art of Aubrey Beardsley
A Gallery of his Drawings
Aubrey Beardsley's art has gone in and out of fashion many times over the last century. But there is no doubt he has had a lasting impression on many artists who followed him. His life was a brief one. Born in 1872, he achieved fame early, but was dead by age tewntyfive. His drawings were not mere illustrations, but formed an integral part of the English Aesthetic Movement and are best understood in this context. "The Dancer's Reward"
( 570 x 671 / 14 k / gif) This drawing was one of Beardsley's illustrations for the English translation of Oscar Wilde's Salome , published by Elkin Mathews and John Lane, London, 1894. Wilde's work was originally published in a French edition to circumvent English prudishness. The Yellow Book , cover art, Vol. I, April 1894.
( 384 x 511 x 256 / 10 k / gif) The Yellow Book has been referred to as the quintessential periodical of the 1890's in England. Beardsley served as art editor of this avant-garde literary journal from its inception in April 1894, until he was dismissed a year later. This was the time of Oscar Wilde's arrest and conviction for homosexual practices and Beardsley, quite unfairly, was seen as having to close a link with Wilde. "Mrs. Patrick Campbell"

Aubrey Beardsley
English artist, born at Brighton, 1872; died at Mentone, France, 16 March, 1898. It has been cleverly said that Beardsley was "a boy who never grew up", and the statement has a considerable amount of truth in it. He was a wonderfully precocious boy all his life, with the frank merriment, enthusiasm, and exuberance of a lad. He was unable to withstand the desire to do clever, mischievous things and to shock people of narrow opinions, and his ignoble and vicious works were more the result of his Puck-like mischief and eccentricity of habit than of any evil disposition. His earliest published work was a programme for an entertainment in 1888 at Brighton Grammar School, where he was a pupil, and his next in the "Bee Magazine", Blackburn, 1891. Beardsley had a marvellous knowledge of the quality of line, a real and powerful sense of beauty, coupled with a constant desire to be quaint, fanciful, or bizarre. He possessed a vigour, inventiveness, and daintiness almost unapproachable in the work of any other man. Hammerton speaks of the "serene surety of his drawing", of his "superb sense of style"' but Beardsley's love of mischief, which he deeply regretted, led him into serious faults and caused him to be often misunderstood. By those who knew him he was regarded as the most original, brilliant, witty, and lovable man they ever met. His illustrations of "Salome", "The Rape of the Lock", "Mademoiselle de Maupin" and "Volpone" are amongst his greatest works. From boyhood he had bad health and suffered from frequent attacks of haemorrhage. He was always a man of deep religious feeling and became a Catholic at the close of his life (31 March, 1895).

Beardsley, Aubrey (1872-1898) English decadent artist Aubrey Beardsley was a precocious talent who made a lasting contribution to the art of illustration. One of the greatest of the Symbolists and a master of pen and ink, Beardsley developed a highly original, formally elegant style, inspired in part by Greek vase painting, in which ornamental rhythm of line combines with a perverse and wickedly satiric imagination to create unforgettable images, often hilarious, frequently erotic, and sometimes deeply moving. Beardsley was born on August 21, 1872 in Brighton, England into a genteel family, but one rendered nearly destitute by the incompetence of his businessman father. He was a musical and artistic prodigy, so his talent was obvious very early, but so was his ill health. He had his first attack of tuberculosis, the disease that would eventually kill him, at the age of nine. For the rest of his brief life, he was plagued by numerous illnesses and relapses.
