Realeza, Heroísmo e as Ruas: A Arte de Jean-Michel Basquiat
Por Robert Farris Thompson
"Meu fogo pode fazer-me atravessar a água gélida."

JEAN MICHEL BASQUIAT
(1960-88) Born to middle-class Haitian-American parents, Basquiat was a cardboard box inhabiting graffiti artist of '70s, '80s New York. He was 'discovered' by the influential journalist/poet/critic Rene Ricard, and the Pop Art genius Andy Warhol, who both loved Basquiat's scribbly, colourful, street style. By the time he was 24 years of age, Basquiat had had 23 one-man shows, 43 group shows and had been the subject of over 50 articles in the press. His high-speed rise to fame only fuelled his drug-habit, and in 1988, a year after Andy Warhol died, Basquiat overdosed on heroin. In 1996, Julian Schnabel directed an engaging film about the artist's life in Manhattan in the money-driven eighties.

69. Jean-Michel Basquiat, By Louis Armand
(c) Louis Armand, 2001 reprinted from Litteraria Pragensia 11.21 (2001) 94106. LOUIS ARMAND jean-michel basquiat© IDENTITY AND THE ART OF (DIS)EMPOWERMENT.

his role in the larger world, and within the urban multi-ethnic culture of New York.
I have quoted this passage here for a number of reasons. Firstly because it rightfully points to the virtuosity of Basquiat’s performance of as an artist, but also because it qualifies this virtuosity, however naively it may seem, as the virtuosity of an African-American New York artist, whose urban multi-ethnicity is the mark of a chic ‘80s neo-primitivism. In a similar vein, Phoebe Hoban, in her recent and widely distorted biography of Basquiat, A Quick Killing in Art , has described him as “the Jimmi Hendrix of the art world.“ While others, like art dealer Larry Gagosian, have exhibited a condescension and less subtle racism that characterised Basquiat’s relationship with many of those in the white-dominated New York art scene. Gagosian’s memory of first meeting Basquiat is quoted in Hoban’s biography: “I was surprised to see a black artist and particularly one that was—you know—with the hair. I was taken back by it, and kind of put off.“
In his preface to the catalogue for the 1999 Basquiat retrospective at the Museo Revoltella, in Trieste, Bruno Bischofberger (Basquiat’s Swiss dealer), echoing these ideas, wrote:

Profile
Since 1977 Jean-Michel Basquiat starts to establish himself in the New York underground and covers the subway and Soho's walls with tags and graffiti signed SAMO. From 1980 on he starts to work on all types of supports, from classical canvases to palisades. He draws his inspiration from Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art and Leonard de Vinci. Very marked by the Beat Generation and Burroughs' " cut-up ", he adds words and poems to this concept. Skulls, skeletons, anatomical boards, voodoo totems, as well as American consumer society symbols fill his works. In 1984, he works together with Francesco Clemente and Andy Warhol who said about him: "Jean-Michel made me paint differently". From 1981 on, being the year of his first solo exhibition, he becomes the first Afro-American artist with an international recognition. He dies from an overdose in 1988 in New York.

BASQUIAT and SAMO© BIOGRAPHY:
Jean Michel Basquiat was an artist who was born on December 22, 1960 to a Haitian father ( Gerard Basquiat ) and a Brooklyn born Puerto Rican mother ( Matild ). Even as a young child Basquiat displayed an excellent talent for art which is mother strongly encouraged. Unlike the average graffiti artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat came to personify the art scene of the 80s, with its merging of youth culture, money, hype, excess, and self-destruction. And then there was the work, which the public image tended to overshadow: paintings and drawings that conjured up marginal urban black culture and black history, as well as the artist's own conflicted sense of identity. In 1977, along with a friend Al Diaz Basquiat started to spray painting cryptic sayings on subway trains and around lower Manhattan and signing them with the name SAMO© Same Old Shit Basquiat always said that " SAMO© as an end to mindwash religion, nowhere politics, and bogus philosophy," " SAMO© saves idiots," "Plush safe he think; SAMO©” Basquiat's ploy was to write anti-materialism messages in plain view of some of the worst materialists around.

the weblog of an art person
From: the Diaries of Andy Warhol , edited by Pat Hackett Monday, October 4, 1982 Down to meet Bruno Bischofberger (cab $7.50). He brought Jean Michel Basquiat with him. He’s the one who used the name “Samo” when he used to sit on the sidewalk in Greenwich Village and paint T-shirts, and I’d give him $10.00 here and there and send him up to Serendipity to try to sell the T-shirts there. He was just one of those kids who drove me crazy. He’s black but some people say he Puerto Rican so I don’t know. And then Bruno discovered him and now he’s on Easy Street. He’s got a great loft on Christie Street. He was a middle-class Brooklyn kid – I mean he went to college and things – and he was trying to like that painting in the Greenwich Village.
And so had lunch for them and then I took a Polaroid and he went home and within two hou8rs a painting was back, still wet, of him and me together. And I mean, just getting to Christie Street must have taken an hour. He told me his assistant painted it. From the Life and Death of Andy Warhol , by Victor Bockris
In the last years of his, the person who helped free him from his “Andy suit” more than anyone else was Jean-Michel Basquiat, the wild child of the neo-expressionism. The son of a Puerto Rican mother and a Haitian father, he was raised in a middle-class neighborhood of Brooklyn. This precocious, fiercely energetic young man was, as Andy had been, a prot©g© of Henry Gildzahler, who had been impressed with his work in a New York/New Wave group show at P.S.1 Gallery in Long Island city. (Andy, in fact, had met Basquiat in 1979 while having lunch with Geldzahler in a Soho restaurant. The young man, then nineteen and a street huckster, was selling postcard reproductions of his paintings. And had bought one for a dollar.)
