Jean-Michel Basquiat
was born on December 22, 1960 in Brooklyn, New York. His father, Gerard Basquiat was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and his mother, Matilde was born in Brooklyn of Puerto Rican parents. Jean-Michel Basquiat's productive career spanned just one short decade, yet he is considered one of the best-known artists of his generation and one of only a small number of Hispanic-African-American artists to have achieved international recognition. Graduating from subway walls to canvas and from the streets of New York to the galleries of SoHo, the artist and his work will forever remain a mystery to those who seek explanation. Jean-Michel's early years were spent with his middle class Haitian father, Gerard, who was unable to fulfill his son's need for nurturing and recognition. To fill the void, Jean-Michel hit the streets of New York at a young age where art became an outlet for his anger and empty childhood. Also known by the tag "SAMO," Jean-Michel's unique brand of graffiti was found throughout Manhattan as early as 1976. "His work from the first consisted of conceptual, enigmatic combinations of words and symbols, executed with the curt simplicity of a late Roman inscription", according to Henry Geldzahler, longtime curator of twentieth-century art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Jean-Michel was 18 when he approached Geldzahler and Andy Warhol in a SoHo restaurant. He sold Andy a postcard for one dollar but was dismissed by Geldzahler as "too young." Less than three years later (1981) he was invited by artist and filmmaker, Diego Cortez, to participate in the P.S. 1 show, (Institute for Art and Urban Resources), alongside more than twenty artists including Keith Haring, Robert Mapplethorpe, Kenny Sharf and Andy Warhol.

Jean-Michel Basquiat
In early 1982 Jean-Michel took the art world by storm with his rampageous one-man show at Annina Nosei's gallery. This momentum propelled him to the forefront of the Neo-Expressionist movement. Jean-Michel, accustomed to pushing the envelope in all aspects of his life, had something special to offer the neo-expressionist admirer: "I cross out words so you will see them more - the fact that they are obscured makes you want to read them."

And then there was the work, which the public image tended to overshadow: paintings and drawings that conjured up marginal urban black culture and black history, as well as the artist's own conflicted sense of identity. He was, all at once it seemed, the ultimate party animal, a wannabe streetkid and grafittist hiding his black Brooklyn middle class roots, an advocate and interpreter of the marginal and dispossessed at the court of the mainstream, an angry black aspirant to the all-white art canon, a precocious talent, a creature of cynical marketing and a fraud, a proto-muIticulturalist, an American original. As I came across the abundant contradictions, the public perceptions, mythifications and self-inventions that went into the shaping of Basquiat's life and work, the more I wanted to understand how these had all attached to the same person. I set out to create my own picture of Basquiat.

Jean-Michel Basquiat
Jean-Michel Basquiat is known throughout the art world for his paintings that commented on racism, capitalism, urban street life, and popular culture.
Basquiat was born in Brooklyn in 1960. He began drawing cartoons at age 5 on scraps of paper that his father brought home from his job as an accountant. When he was 8, his mother gave him a copy of Gray's Anatomy, which prompted a lifelong interest in the human figure.
At the age of 17, Basquiat left home. While living in abandoned houses or with friends, he then began to do graffiti work, collaborating with fellow artist and friend, Al Diaz In 1980, Basquiat first displayed his work in The Times Square Show, an exhibition of underground artists. He received positive reviews for his work, and began to sell his paintings.
In 1981 he was invited to show his work in a group of artists that included Andy Warhol and Keith Haring. In 1985, at the age of 24, he appeared on the cover of New York Times Magazine.
Basquiat worked with everything from oil to acrylic paint, to crayon, to color Xerox. He often created collages of words, figures, and symbols drawn from American history and culture. Some of his best known paintings are Self Portrait as a Heel #3, Hollywood Africans, and CPRKR.

It has some very intelligent writings by Keith Haring, Francesco Clemente and others. Also, it contains some informative interviews with the late artist that contain some of his famous quotes. One thing that is most exciting about this book is that it shows almost all of the Basquiat/Warhol and Basquiat/Warhol/Clemente collaborations! Also, the photographs and art reproductions are amazingly done. If you love Basquiat, or even mildly admire him (or Haring, Clemente, or Warhol for that matter) you NEED this book.

57. Jean-Michel Basquiat And Critique - An Article @ Cavant-garde.com

http://www.cavant-garde.com/articles/basquiat.shtml
march 2004 the world according to art Jean-Michel Basquiat and Critique by cavan wee "If Cy Twombly and Jean Dubuffet had a baby and gave it up for adoption, it would be Jean-Michel" The above quote by poet and critic Rene Ricard conveys a certain arrogance on the part of the critic. This arrogance, although not a new element of modern Western criticism and periodisation, clearly influenced the euphoric art market of the eighties and one emerging black/hispanic artist, namely Jean-Michel Basquiat. The combination of capitalist greed, presumption and a less than innocent 'minority' artist - " I wanted to be a star not a gallery mascot " led to a series of hiccups in the modern Western art continuum. Was Basquiat a postmodern genius, a victim of critic-presumed identity ( read: Clement Greenberg and followers, you have finally met your match ), or both? Considering that these two concepts share an intrinsic love-hate relationship - there can be no fame without critic and no critic without fame, this is a question that cannot and should not be examined. What should be examined however is the extent of misinformed critique, and how it has an impact on the reputation of the artist. Figure 1 : Pork, 1981

Jean-Michel Basquiat watches Graffiti Art, Abstract Expressionism, poetry. One searches for words to describe the art of Jean-Michel Basquiat which is currently on view at the Marcel Sitcoske Gallery, the first solo exhibition of his work in San Francisco. Basquiat's style is deeply rooted in graffiti art. He was closely associated with Andy Warhol and Keith Haring who, in turn, drew inspiration from some of Basquiat's work. The exhibit focuses on works from 1981 to 1985. In addition to paintings and decoupage, the show has a number of works in oil-stick on paper from 1981. The pieces combine words and line drawing in a poetic way that brings to mind haiku. They are thought provoking vignettes, simply presented. The themes explored in this collection are powerful - class struggle, jails, oppression, pop culture. Yet, even in the most desolate images, the artist's sense of humor asserts itself, allowing the viewer to step in and appreciate his perspective.
