French version G R E A T M A S T E R S february 2000 Barye Antoine-Louis Nationality: French Activity: sculptor Average price rate Between US $ 1,000 and 70,000 The son of a goldsmith Barye started to work at 13 as an apprentice to an engraver and then for Bicunais, a goldsmith. Such apprenticeship enabled him to discover the secrets of metals, notably foundry and chiselling methods. Barye then worked in 1816 with Bosio, a sculptor, and studied at the school of Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1818 until 1824. In 1820 he was awarded a second prize medal with a sculpture entitled “Cain cursed by God” and started to earn a living working for Fauconnier, a goldsmith for whom he produced small-size animals. Barye however found his main source of inspiration in the gardens of the Paris Natural Museum (Jardin des Plantes) where he studied captive animals and took a keen interest in anatomy.

Barbedienne, Fondeur A French green/reddish brown-patinated bronze grop entitled "La Force", signed Barye, F. Barbedienne, Fondeur Barye started to exhibit his works in 1827 at the Paris Salon and obtained a second prize in 1831 with his Tiger devouring a Gavial. Still art critics snubbed him and considered his representations of wild animals as mere paper-weights. As a result his Lion at Rest was refused at the 1836 Salon and Barye waited 14 years before being allowed to show his works there. He eventually met success with his Theseus fighting against the Centaur Bienor and took part in the 1855 Universal Exhibition where his Jaguar devouring a hare earned him a first prize. During his career this artist however benefited from the support of the Duke of Orleans in 1834 and produced some monumental pieces for the French State. Explore Art Home Artists Antoine- Louis Barye Born 1796, Died 1875 Sculptor French Antoine-Louis Barye was initially trained in goldsmithing, his father's occupation. After serving in Napoleon's army, he studied sculpture and painting and entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1818. Like the painters Théodore Géricault and Eugène Delacroix , with whom he studied the animals at the Paris zoo, Barye exemplified the Romantic predilection for exotic and violent subjects; many of his bronzes depict wild beasts in combat. At the Salon of 1831, he won a medal for Tiger Devouring a Gavail , a crocodile-like creature. This large-scale sculpture's subject was a radical choice, departing from the Académie's strict hierarchy, which ranked the human figure as art's noblest subject and animals as one of the lowliest. With the success of this work, Barye began working independently as a sculptor and painter. He continued submitting his animal bronzes to the Salons , where they competed on equal terms with sculptures of more traditional human subjects.

New Acquisitions Antoine-Louis Barye Nadar French, 1855 - 1859 Salt print Irregular: 8 x 6 in. 84.XM.436.12 Referred to as the "Michelangelo of the menagerie" by critic Théophile Gautier, Antoine-Louis Barye was about sixty when he posed for Nadar. The son of a Parisian jeweler, he studied animal anatomy thoroughly in books, in laboratories, and at the zoo. When a lion died, he and Eugène Delacroix dissected it. Here his stern visage reflects the notably taciturn man who, although he taught drawing, rarely spoke to his students, correcting their work simply by retouching. The overall effect of self-contained if melancholy dignity, of a man who has survived adversity and is beholden to no one, accords well with contemporary descriptions of Barye. His connection with Nadar was probably established through the painters who were friends of both.
