Born in Dronryp, his art training began at the Antwerp Academy, and was completed with Baron Leys, an historical painter whose careful reconstructions of life in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries made him the ideal teacher for a painter like Alma-Tadema, whose choice of subject-matter had always been similar. But it was left to Ernst Gambert, the Belgian international art dealer to realise that in Alma-Tadema he had found himself a first-class artist. After seeing his work, Gambert immediately commissioned forty-four paintings which were eventually shown in England, where they caused an instant sensation. The Victorians had already been conditioned to accept nudes as an art form after Lord Leighton had exhibited his paintings in the 1860s. But Alma-Tadema's paintings went a step further. After painting a number of subjects in which his semi-nude females were merely decorative adjuncts to his vivid reconstructions of classical history, he overreached himself with his painting

When he settled in England in the 1870s, his mature style had already evolved, and connoisseurs eagerly embraced the work of this talented artist. Responding to the serene beauty of paintings such as Coign of Vantage and Silver Favourites , Victorian audiences clearly appreciated how Alma-Tadema captured the era's sense of nostalgic longing for a lost Golden Age. Laurens Alma-Tadema was born in the Dutch village of Dronrijp in 1836. His early works contain subtle but compelling similarities to the art of the Dutch masters. In the 1860s, however, the artist traveled to Italy, and it was a trip that literally changed his life. For it was during this expedition that Alma-Tadema encountered the ruins of the ancient Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Fascinated by this civilization, and especially by the details of daily life, the painter began his fruitful study of ancient Rome. And indeed, Roman (and to a lesser extent, Greek) archaeology, art, and culture became Alma-Tadema's lifelong passions. This interest in all things Roman is evident in many of Alma-Tadema's works. From his early so-called "Pompeian period", when he tended to favor depictions of interiors with Pompeian red walls, to his later more sentimental works, Alma-Tadema has left us a legacy of beautiful and evocative paintings.

Explore Art Home Artists Lawrence Alma- Tadema Born 1836, Died 1912 Painter, Draftsman Dutch Dutch by birth, Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema initially specialized in Merovingian and Egyptian scenes, but after visiting Pompeii in 1863 he turned to archaeologically exact genre paintings of classical Greece and Rome. The British publication Punch called him a "marbellous artist" because of his skill at painting marble. Alma-Tadema moved to London in 1870 after his wife's death, and soon became a British citizen. His paintings are marked by clarity of color, exactness, and smooth finish; he imagined a Rome of splendor, sunlight, and gentle sentiment. Alma-Tadema inspired many followers and imitators, including Hollywood, which has consistently reproduced his vision of the ancient world on film. Alma-Tadema's paintings offer no moral lessons, and his critics called them lewd and spiritually vacuous, but the public loved them, enabling him to enjoy a sumptuous lifestyle in a house modeled on a Pompeian villa. His second wife, painter Laura Epps, appeared in many paintings. Alma-Tadema became a Royal Academy member in 1879 and received the Order of Merit in 1905. Queen Victoria knighted him in 1899. Lawrence ALMA TADEMA Laurens Alma-Tadema was born the son of a notary in 1836. He entered the Antwerp Academy in 1852 where he studied art until 1858. Married in 1863, on honeymoon in Italy where he discovered the ancient Roman ruins. The Roman culture became the subject of many paintings. After the death of his wife in 1869, Alma-Tedema settled in London to continue his work. His theatrical manner of painting the ancient world earned him a good deal of money in both England and America. He died at the age of 76 in 1912. He was in many ways a man of his time who just happened to prefer to paint his pretty Victorian ladies dressed in togas and Greek garments.
