April 26, 2004 "If I were president, we would not be in Iraq today, we would not be at war."
John F. Kerry on the campaign trail.
Amid all the 20/20 hindsight and politically motivated finger-pointing from a few shameless partisans on the 9/11 Commission (and you know who you are ... Richie, Bobby, Jamie), an exceedingly high-stakes contest is emerging. It's a contest about how the United States will classify and respond to terrorist threats in the future.
In an effort to undermine President George Bush's doctrine of preemption a dramatic doctrinal departure from the Clinton administration's doctrine of, well, actually the Clinton administration had no coherent doctrine whatsoever John Kerry's high-profile minions on the "bipartisan" commission are spinning furiously. Indeed, they're suggesting that when state-supported Jihadi terrorists do things like slam commercial airliners into skyscrapers killing thousands of our fellow countrymen, these actions constitute "criminal acts" rather than "acts of war."
Such assertions about the nature of terrorism sound antiquated yet tragically familiar. You'll recall that treating terrorism as a "criminal act" was the Clinton administration's policy an approach that left our nation all but naked on that fateful September morn. In a very real way, then, such assertions serve to remind us of the ultimate Clinton legacy the legacy of its failure to grasp the wicked and ruthless nature of our Jihadi adversary. These Jihadis know they are serving an agenda that is far more ambitious than "criminal conspiracy."

Sketchbooks from the Archives of American Art
JOHN WHITE ALEXANDER'S (1856-1915) sketchbook is devoted to value studies of single figures. On each page he experimented with the arrangement of shapes and patterns of light and shadow in shallow space. His sitters are engaged in quiet, composed, interior activities, much in the way that Alexander withdrew into the private world of his sketchbook to meditate on the formal elements of light and composition. Art Gallery About John White Alexander A lexander, John White during the last quarter of the nineteenth century, American art's internationalism and cosmopolitanism, perhaps its most characteristic features, were fostered by a generation of artists who sought foreign training, self-consciously reveling in their art's very lack of "Americanness." Their increased attention to formal issues, with little regard to subject matter, realism, or national expression, contrasted with ante-bellum concerns grounded in native subject matter and narrative. McHenry, Newport, Rhode Island, c. 1930, until the present John White Alexander began his career in New York at the age of eighteen at Harper's Weekly as an illustrator. In 1877, he went to Munich and attended classes at the Royal Academy. The academy was too rigid for him, and he moved to Polling, Upper Bavaria, where a group of American students were studying under Frank Duveneck. A year later, he traveled with "Duveneck's Boys" to Florence and Venice. Alexander did admire Duveneck's work, shared a studio with him in Florence, and taught some of Duveneck's art classes. While Alexander was in Venice, he met James Abbott McNeill Whistler, who was most influential in the development of Alexander's painting. In 1881, Alexander returned to New York and became a successful portraitist while continuing his work at Harper's Weekly and teaching drawing at Princeton University. In 1890, he went with his wife and child to Paris, where they socialized with Whistler, Henry James, Stéphane Mallarmé, Auguste Rodin, Oscar Wilde, and Mrs. Jack Gardner. It was here that Alexander came into contact with the Symbolist and Art Nouveau movements, which influenced his characteristic style. His paintings of attenuated women, seen close up in serpentine poses became the hallmark of his work. He traveled back and forth between Paris and America and in 1901 returned to New York, where he was in great demand as a portrait painter. In 1905, he was commissioned to paint forty-eight murals for the new Carnegie Institute, a singular and highly profitable distinction. He was president of the National Academy of Design from 1909 until his death in 1915.
