Final Consensus Report of the Keystone International Dialogue Series on Plant Genetic Resources: Madr as Plenary Session, February 1990 [Report # 27] To Order Report USFDA/ EPA/ USDA Proceedings of the Transgenic Plan t Confer ence, September 1988 [Report # 32] To Order Report
T his report presents the proceedings from the Conference on the Scientific Issues Associated with Transgenic Plants which was held in Annapolis, Maryland, September 7-9, 1988. The Conference was jointly planned and sponsored by the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The purpose of the Conference was to discuss the scientific issues concerning the development and commercialization of transgenic plants. The goal of the Conference was not to reach consensus, but rather to provide an opportunity for a thorough, interactive examination of the scientific issues. The Conference participants included representatives from all of the sectors involved and concerned with the development of transgenic plants: federal and state agencies, industry, environmental and consumer groups, and academia. The Conference was designed to provide opportunities for both formal panel presentations and small facilitated discussion groups so that the participants could both hear from those actively involved in the scientific issues and have an opportunity to discuss the issues in-depth with people from similar perspectives and those from diverse interests.

Admissions Plant Genetics and Breeding Plant Genetics and Breeding is one of seven specializations that students may choose from within the Plant Sciences major.
  • Plant Genetics and Breeding is the application of genetics and related sciences to improve cultivated plant species. It is used to improve new varieties of agronomic, vegetable, horticultural, and ornamental crops that better meet the needs of modern living. At Cornell and other institutions, research is conducted to increase quality and productivity of food and ornamental products economically and efficiently. Some examples of improvements that will likely occur through plant breeding and biotechnology research follow.
  • Crops will be bred with increased tolerance to environmental stresses such as heat, cold, salt, drought, excess moisture, and soil acidity. Food value of crops will improve because of a larger concentration of high-quality proteins, vitamins, and minerals and improved storage capability. Plants will have increased resistance to nematodes and to diseases caused by bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Insect predation will be controlled by removing chemical signals from plants that attract insects or by giving plants the ability to produce their own natural repellents or chemicals to entrap insects. Food productivity of plants will increase because of improved efficiency of physiological processes.

By a decision of the Presidium of Slovak Academy of Sciences, the Association has been transformed since July 1, 1990 into Institute of Plant Genetics SAS headed by Dr. Anna Pretova, PhD. On the basis of the same kind of decision, the name of the Institute was extended since April 1, 1998 on Institute of Plant Genetics and Biotechnology SAS to characterise more exactly the nature of the performed research in its two departments. The Institute as a carrier of the PHARE project under Foundation for Development of Human Resources named ”The higher forms of education in plant biotechnology” has obtained a certificate of Ministry of Education of the Slovak Republic which endorse the Institute to perform a requalification courses in the field of plant biotechnology. The associates of the Institute provide consultations and guidence services in the respective field contributing to the erection on the concept of the national programme of biotechnology development.
