    Botany 429. Plant Genetics
    About this class
Botany 429 is an advanced course in plant genetics. It covers a range of topics many of which are specific to plants. Students taking this class are usually interested in learning more genetics and, at the same time, in becoming more familiar with plant biology. In previous years, the enrollment has been between 10 and 40 students, mostly junior and seniors, but also some graduate students. About one third were Botany majors, while the rest were in other biological majors, most commonly Molecular and Cellular Biology. A few students were from Forestry. In the past, this course has got very good evaluations, although most students agreed that it was quite challenging.

    http://www.mpiz-koeln.mpg.de/saedler/
Transition from vegetative to generative growth in response to exogenous and endogenous signals is a vital process for plant propagation. Phase transition is investigated in our department in Antirrhinum majus and in Arabidopsis thaliana . This process is controlled by a number of genes, some encoding transcription factors like MADS-Box- and SBP-Box-Proteins. Floral development commences with the formation of floral meristems. Transcription factors determine flower organ primordium identity and assure organ development. The factors involved as well as the detailed networking of these factors and their targets is of prime interest within the department. The knowledge accumulated can be applied to design crop plants with respect to their inflorescence or floral architecture. MADS-Box genes controlling architectural features are also well suited for evolutionary studies, i. e. concerning the origin of flowers. Taxa examined include mosses, ferns, gnetophytes and angiosperms. In addition, a system of "Reverse Genetics" has been established in Arabidopsis thaliana GABI ) using the En Spm transposon from Zea mays . This element was used to isolate and characterize genes involved in differentiation of epidermal cells initiating a new field of research dealing with cell signaling.

    Plant Breeding versus Plant Genetics
    Jamie Pighin
Graphics: Jiang Long The cultivation of plants is an important aspect of today's society in many ways. Not only do plants supply us with a major food resource and flow of nutrition but they are also an important source of chemicals and other non-food products such as drugs, oils, latex, pigments, and resins . Because of the high value of plants, farmers are constantly trying to increase the yield and quality of their products by using more effective production techniques. The physical appearance of plants is determined by genetic factors that are inherited from parental crops. The natural transfer of genes can be altered using many genetic techniques such as selection or genetic engineering. One of the important goals of plant breeding is maintaining genetic diversity. This can be achieved through selection and hybridization. More recently, new techniques have evolved to allow us to grow crops artificially in culture from plant parts to produce whole plants (for more information see this article Modern science has allowed us to get away from the traditional method of plant breeding to more artificial asexual methods. This allows plants to be produced using individual, or groups of cells, which grow into full plants. Genetics has also allowed us to modify our crops in a more scientific way to select for traits that are more desired by society. In this article we will be discussing the differences between the more traditional techniques of plant breeding and the modern advances of plant genetics.
