Currants and Gooseberries in the Home Garden
Doug S. Foulk and Emily E. Hoover
Currants and gooseberries are closely related berry-producing shrubs well suited to home gardens throughout most of the Upper Midwest. Hardy and productive, they provide fruit useful in jams and desserts. Red and white currants are both classified as members of the same species, Ribes sativum, while the less common European black currant is known as Ribes nigrum. Gooseberries of American origin are Ribes hirtellum or hybrids derived from this species, while the European type is Ribes uva-crispa. Gooseberries and currants, although closely related, can easily be identified by examining the canes and fruit color; gooseberry canes normally produce a spine at each leaf node and bear roughly grape-sized berries singly or in groups of 2 or 3, while currant canes lack spines or prickles and bear 8 to 30 smaller fruit in clusters (figure 1). A mature gooseberry or currant shrub can produce up to four quarts of fruit annually. Figure 1. Cane and fruit of

    156. Iowa State Horticultural Society
Affiliated organizations representing and promoting specific sectors of horticulture.
    http://www.iowahort.org
iowahort, Currently, the Iowa State Horticultural Society consists of 23 affiliated organizations that all represent and promote a specific sector of horticulture. A listing of the organizations that are currently members of the ISHS, along with the name of the President for each group, can be found on the back of this informational sheet.
The Society does not offer individual memberships to the general public. A person who is a member of any one of the 23 affiliate associations is automatically a member of the ISHS. They may participate in any Society function and have full voting privileges at the annual meeting.
A Board of Directors governs the activities and functions of the Society. Each affiliate appoints two representatives to the Board. In addition, there are several at-large and ex-officio positions on the Board. The general membership elects the Board's executive officers every two years during the Society's annual meeting and awards ceremony.
The ISHS is involved in promoting the horticultural industry as a means of diversifying agriculture in Iowa. The Society also supports the many noncommercial, avocational interest groups throughout the state. The ISHS acts as a liaison between its affiliate membership, the legislative branch, state and federal government agencies and Iowa State University. In recent years, members of the Society have become increasingly active in the public policy arena where horticultural interests are of concern.
