Kindergarten Gardeners
This spring, a kindergarten class at Loyal Heights Elementary School had a lesson in garden planning and planting with a deadline. The project was supported by a visit from one student's mother, a Miller Library staff member bearing an armload of books. With only six weeks to watch their garden grow before school let out, the search was on for a quick-growing crop that would be ready for harvest by the end of the term. With Laura Blumhagen's help, the class consulted The Gardener's Table (by Richard Merrill and Joe Ortiz, 2000), and learned radishes would be ready to pick within 24 to 28 days. The kids also had watched potatoes sprout in class and hoped they could leave a crop of potatoes for next year's kindergarteners to harvest. Sharon Lovejoy's Roots, Shoots, Buckets, and Boots (1999) gave detailed instructions on planting potatoes. In addition, the kids learned that marigolds would make a pretty border around their garden plot and discourage plant-eating insects.
Each child planted a seed potato, radish seeds and marigold seeds. They've been watching with eager interest as first heart-shaped radish leaves, then slender marigold seedlings and finally sturdy potato plants sprouted from the soil. The end of May, they will proudly harvest their first radishes.

    58. Horticulture Therapy Goals
Why is horticulture a Good Medium for Work With People With Special Needs? horticulture is a `normal and accepted activity in society.
    http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Jane_Stoneham/jmcd.htm
Why is Horticulture a Good Medium for Work With People With Special Needs?
Horticulture offers many advantages for structuring training, leisure pursuits, remedial treatments and even therapy. Some of the main points to consider are reviewed here by Joanna McDonald, Vice-Chair of Horticulture for All.
    Familiarity
In all but the most deprived and sterile environments plants, trees, flowers, fruits and vegetables are familiar and readily recognisable things. A person can relate to them as real and reassuring parts of the normal world. Providing that a concept of them has been formed correctly to begin with, they are likely to still be recognised when perception or memory are impaired in later life. For people who are born with perceptual difficulties, this familiarity can still exist, purely due to constant exposure to such objects, and therefore more ready recognition. If an object is taken out of its original, learnt context, however, it may not be recognised. For example, potatoes at dinner may not be equated with potatoes growing in the soil. By following through the growing, cooking and eating process these conceptual gaps may be bridged, and a more complete picture developed by the pupil.
    Relevance and Age Appropriateness
Horticulture is a `normal' and accepted activity in society. This is very important, since so many people with disabilities find themselves on the fringe of society, isolated from participation in everyday activities. The relevance and usefulness of horticulture raises self-esteem of the participant, motivates and brings satisfaction. Horticulture is also an activity that is relevant to any age group. This is, again, a valuable attribute, since so many tasks or resources offered to people with disabilities are demeaning and far from appropriate to their age.
