    Alfalfa
Alfalfa Weevil Tip Feeding is Increasing!
This week I have seen an increase in the tip feeding by alfalfa weevil larvae. This is a good time to check your fields for alfalfa weevil damage. Alfalfa weevil larvae leave a small hole (aka SHOT HOLE) in the leaflets that is called "tip feeding". The percent of stems showing feeding damage is how we determine need for alfalfa weevil treatment.
    • Pick 50 alfalfa stems at random throughout the field. Look for the small "shot holes" in the leaves that indicate that larvae are feeding. Record the percentage of alfalfa stems that show the "shot hole" feeding damage in the top 3 inches of the canopy.

    Abstract
Crop rotation guides; forage, feed and grazing restrictions; conservation tillage information; and spraying safety can all be found in this weed control guide. Excellent crop yields often depend on correct formulation, use, application and timing of agricultural chemicals. This guide discusses each. This book gives guidelines for which herbicides, concentrations, application rates and repetition are best for specific weed problems.

The objectives of the Institute of Field and Garden Crops are to develop and improve (a) the genetic material and the technology for the efficient and safe production of crops and agricultural products; and (b) the management of land, water, vegetation, crops and domestic animals as an ecologically balanced system. Breeding of new improved cultivars, mostly F1 hybrids, is conducted by teams of specialists in genetics, molecular genetics, crop physiology, biochemistry and tissue culture.
Genetic material of important crops, land races, primitive and wild species are collected, maintained and used for the improvement of parent lines and varieties. The main targets for improvement are fruit and product quality, enrichment of the content of desired natural metabolites, adaptation to climatological constraints, and resistance to pests and diseases. Management practices of crops in the open field, in greenhouses, in screenhouses and under various nets and protectant covers are investigated and improved. The behaviour of crops under stress conditions in the field: high temperatures, drought, salinity; and constraints of temperature, humidity and mineral supply in greenhouses, are studied.

    http://www.entm.purdue.edu/Entomology/news/jobs/fieldcrops_just.html
Academics Research Extension Ag School ... Search Field Crops Entomology The School of Agriculture has historically taken the lead in the development and adoption of new technologies for the production of field crops (corn, soybean, small grains and forages) in Indiana. There has been an emphasis, especially in recent years, on the systems approach to enhancing sustainable field crop production. Indiana field crop producers have benefited from Purdue-generated technology improvements in areas such as conservation tillage, efficient nutrient management, crop varieties and integrated approaches to pest management. Field crops entomology has been an essential component of this effort in Indiana and the region for over 50 years, and today the need is as great as ever before. Management of insect pests is an important component of the overall economic production of field crops in Indiana. Field crops in the Midwest are attacked by a wide diversity of insect pests that have shown a remarkable ability to adapt to various management strategies. As an example, the western corn rootworm, the most important Midwest corn insect pest, in recent years has undergone a change in behavior that eliminates crop rotation as an effective management technique. This change in behavior has caused Indiana producers to treat an additional 2.2 million acres of corn annually with insecticides, with a cost of over $37 million. Emerging control tactics, such as transgenic crops, provide new opportunities for insect management, but also result in new challenges for producers to determine appropriate use and preservation of these new technologies.
