Language courses stress oral proficiency and the study of contemporary Germany society. The Department of European Languages and Cultures has its own Resource Centre with satellite TV, audio-visual equipment and a library. Computer-assisted language learning facilities are also available in the Department. Undergraduate exchange programs: with universities in the German Federal Republic. Postgraduate opportunities: MPhil/PhD by research; MA in Modern Languages Research. Assessment: German language courses 100, 290/291 and 211 are assessed by class tests, written exercises and end-of-year examinations. Oral performance is continuously assessed. The Journal of Prisoners on Prisons provides a forum unmatched in its breadth of content and its readership. We had difficulty reaching women in prison and hope that this issue will find wide distribution in order to support, encourage and inspire women in prison over the world to submit articles to the JPP. The voices of the women in this issue are unfettered by academic standards. The form and content speak openly of our struggles to affect the minds and hearts of the readership - to hear our truths. The words are authentic and united in message. This special issue on women in prison is dedicated to all people incarcerated, those dead, and those still struggling for life. It is produced with gratitude for the many thousands of humanitarians who promote the ideal of social justice through their work and their examples. Some are mentioned in this issue but we extend our sincerest gratitude to each and every one - among them that great woman, Claire Culhane of the Prisoners Rights Group of Vancouver, Canada, who teaches us all that survival is the first priority. Thank-you all, in the gentleness of Sisterhood. Typically unnoticed in the din produced by perpetual criminal justice debates, women prisoners suffer extreme isolation. Yet while women constitute approximately 50% of the population, how is it possible that so little can be heard from women prisoners?

About this page More and more tools are appearing, and more and more are already supporting JDK 1.1 and/or JavaBeans which have a page of their own on this site - so have a look there as well!. There is a separate list of CASE tools that support Java (some can generate Java, some can even do round-trip engineering). Then there are true IDEs: integrated development environments that usually include an easy way to build graphical interfaces but do a lot more than that: in general, they have a code editor and include an applet viewer; often they include a class browser and a debugger as well. Class libraries should be self-explanatory: you use these to build applets with , and they can normally be integrated with or used from the IDEs. There are also a few links to straight source code with useful algorithms, including one from James Gosling himself. Finally the Other tools section lists some tools that don't fall in any of the above categories but still can be used somewhere in the development cycle.

The event focused on projects of a non-gallery and non-object based nature, instead concentrating on forms of exchange that are primarily social and personal. Extractions: A tale of two publics - the Joubert Park Project concludes by Kathryn Smith "The Johannesburg Art Gallery is static, it lacks vitality, it is nothing but a richly embellished mausoleum," read a prescient if rather belligerent statement by a journalist for the Johannesburg daily paper The Star in 1965. Prior to that, in 1946, the then JAG director, Anton Hendricks, noted that "[a] modern art gallery ... has an active function to perform as an educational institution in the life of the city. In order to convert the Johannesburg Art Gallery from a static show place to an institution which will fulfil this function as part of the city life, the existing collections, which are merely the foundations of the more representative collections of the future, must be built up and completed according to a general plan, and new exhibits must be shown from time to time". Wise words indeed that sound more likely to have been uttered in the last 10 years, not nearly 60 years ago, with reference to the JAG. Ultimately they go to show that the gallery's problems can't simply be put down to Johannesburg's rapid transition from white city to black city. Given a lot of other commentary and prognoses offered with regards to the museum that American art historian Pam Allara has described as being rather like "a dowager at a rock concert", they hit the spot, and amply articulate the challenges that the Joubert Park Public Art Project team rose to over the last three months.

Extractions: DaimlerChrysler Award for Sculpture 2002 by Kathryn Smith Along with (rare) unanimous agreement on the choice of this year's winner of the DaimlerChrysler Award for Sculpture 2002 - Cape Town-based artist Jane Alexander - other commentary bandying about the smoker-filled foyer of the Indaba Hotel last Thursday went something like "yeah, and the food wasn't bad either - but what is that on the cover of the brochure?" A planar sculptural form bearing resemblance to a disjointed boat propeller (huh?) or perhaps elements used in car construction (more likely), the object seemed thankfully to exist only in the form of a 3D computer graphic. It certainly did not look like anything a self-respecting nominee for this prestigious and career-boosting art prize could muster. This is a prize to be coveted. DaimlerChrysler has invested substantially in South African arts and culture with two visual arts prizes and one prize for jazz having been awarded since 1999. They will extend this to cover drama, literature and dance. As their mandate states, "The DaimlerChrysler Award will enable the winner to pursue his or her artistic endeavors undisturbed and without any concern for material well-being for one year." The award will also finance exhibitions in Germany and South Africa that will be accompanied by a bilingual catalogue. The company will also grant winners a three-month stipend in Germany or the US for further study and research.
