Roggero Istituto di Fitovirologia applicata del C.N.R., Strada delle Cacce 73, I-10135 Torino, Italy Systemic acquired resistance (SAR) to virus infections should be carefully distinguished from such resistance regarding other plant pathogens. In particular: (i) SAR operates against localized virus infection by limiting cell-to-cell spread of virus, through a mechanism involving an accelerated hypersensitive reaction without preventing virus replication; (ii) SAR does not operate against systemic virus infection; it neither limits virus replication nor alleviates symptoms. The center's recently acquired VISX Star S4 eye surgery laser is larger than previous systems used for surgeries such as LASIK and required additional space. The re-modeled area measures 20 feet by 14 feet, compared to its former 12 feet by 11 feet dimensions. The expanded facility provides more storage space and additional room for observers. "We wanted to improve the experience for patients and their families," said John Sutphin, M.D., UI professor (clinical) of ophthalmology and visual sciences and a specialist in refractive corneal surgery "They like the extra room, and I appreciate the increased elbow room during procedures and our enhanced teaching capabilities." The advanced technology enables eye surgeons to automatically align and track the eye in three-dimensions during surgery without having to dilate the pupils of the patient's eyes.

Corporate interest, money and priorities are constantly poured into team sports and sporting heroes, leaving the visual artist alone and struggling in her/his traditional modernist role. I live in a community that represents the detritus of apartheid. The peculiar contradiction of the white liberal madam who rallies against apartheid's ideologies, while in the back of the house a black women is laundering her undies, is still commonplace, here. I live on a continent where amongst all the languages spoken that don't derive from Europe, there is no indigenous direct translation of the term "art" in the western sense of the term, i.e., art as functionless and aesthetic. But given all of this, I live in a place where not a day can go by that there isn't some great and wonderful bash in the name of new, fresh and exciting indigenous culture. Go figure? Africa, or rather South Africa, for the last seven years or so, has slipped into a funny sense of anachronism. On the one hand, it still exists under the shadow of apartheid. On the other, everything's fertile for new things to develop. Gallery spaces are being made of disused power plants. Theatrical productions are taking to community centers rather than the traditional, expensive theatre venues. Artists that are put out on the street through lack of funding are looking in other directions for inspiration and luck. People are learning how to improvise; their talents combined with the raw material that is Africa.

Extractions: This lab was involved in studies of the interaction of light with the photoreceptor cells of the retina. In particular, two lines of research were undertaken: one in which single, living rod and cone cells were examined and one in which the overall effects of light on the animal were studied. The former made use of a high-tech instrument, a microspectrophotometer (MSP), and the latter involved living rats, raised under various lighting conditions. In the studies of single cells, Dr. Williams and his students characterized the complex ways in which light is absorbed in the cells. It is clear from these studies that nonuniform patterns of light absorption occur in rods within living eyes. Furthermore, the intracellular patterns of pigment regeneration (restoration of native spectrum) are also nonuniform throughout the cells. Finally, with this MSP, they successfully determined the rate of lateral diffusion of visual pigments in several photoreceptor types, including red-sensitive cones. Until these measurements there had been no report of the diffusion coefficient for visual pigment in cone cells.
