Extractions: Von VANHAL weiss Gerber zu berichten: "Wanhal (Johann) - Er ist geboren zu Nechanitz in Böhmen und ein Schüler des Hrn. von Dittersdorf. Übrigens lebt und schreibt er zu Wien bis auf diesen Tag noch immer fort. Doch schränkt er sich in den letzten Jahren bloss auf das Bedürfniss der Klavierliebhaber ein, für welche er in seiner leichten und gefälligen Manier Sonaten, Divertissements, mehr aber noch Variationen über beliebte Operngesänge, mit und ohne Begleitung anderer Instrumente, schreibt." Besonders erwähnt Gerber zwei "militärisch heroische Musikstücke", eins über die Schlacht bei Würzburg 1796, das andere über die Befreiung Wiens. Sicher liegt Gerber nicht ganz falsch: das "leicht und gefällig" und die Dittersdorfsche Schülerschaft, in der die Schlachtgemälde stehen, weisen Vanhal als einen Komponisten aus, der Haydns und Mozarts Schritt zur neuen Instrumentalmusik mit vorbereitete, aber selber nicht wirklich vollzog. Dennoch weiss Gerber viel zu wenig: dass Jan Krtitel Vanhal (Johann Baptiste Wanhal) von 1739 bis 1813 lebte, dass er immerhin auch mehr als hundert Sinfonien, zwei Opern, Konzerte, etwa hundert Streichquartette und Kirchenmusik schrieb. - Über das Soloinstrument, welches Vanhal gleich doppelt einsetzt, schreibt Koch: "Der Fagott wird anjetzt nicht nur bey solcher Musik, die bloss aus Blasinstrumenten bestehet, zum Vortrage der Grundstimme, und bey vollen Orchesterstücken zur Ausführung einer Füllstimme, oder auch zur Verstärkung des Basses, sondern auch zum Vortrage einer Solostimme, gebraucht. Als Soloinstrument ist ihm besonders der Charakter des Sanften am angemessensten; er wird daher auch von einigen das Instrument der Liebe genannt." Vanhals Doppelkonzert, dessen Manuskript in der Landesbibliothek Schwerin liegt, schöpft die Möglichkeiten des Instruments, die der Komponist aus seiner langen Erfahrung einzusetzen versteht, voll aus.
