As a youth Tchaikovsky faced the hardship of losing his mother at age 14 and was forced to deal with the cold atmosphere of a military boarding school. As such, he shied away from the harsh and brutal world and found solace in music. It was upon hearing Mozart's Don Giovanni that Tchaikovsky decided to dedicate his life to music. Abandoning his civil service position Tchaikovsky entered the St. Petersburg Conservatory to study under Anton Rubinstein. Fortunately Tchaikovsky's father, who although disapproved of Peter's decision for a musical career, didn't interfere with his son's wishes. He started taking piano lessons at age 5, but he was not encouraged to apply his natural musical talent as a child. It wasn't until he was 21 that he started studying music seriously. Two years later he quit his job as a clerk in the ministry of justice to pursue a full time musical career. Tchaikovsky was a musical genius, a national hero, and a known homosexual. Throughout his life Tchaikovsky tried to conceal his homosexuality, although it was one of the world's worst kept secrets. "I am aware that my inclinations are the greatest and most unconquerable obstacle to happiness; I must fight my nature with all of my strength. I shall do everything possible to marry this year." Tchaikovsky letter to his brother. In an attempt to conceal and repress his homosexuality, Tchaikovsky married Antonina Milyukova in 1877. The wedding was immediately followed by a failed attempt at suicide. He walked into the Moska River in hope of contracting pneumonia. The marriage ended within a year. The survival of the brilliant composer is credited to the financial support of Nadezhda von Meck. Mme. von Meck never met Tchaikovsky but was so impressed by his work that she supported him for 12 years. Without explanation, the support was withdrawn by the wealthy, eccentric widow in 1890.

He started piano studies at five and soon showed remarkable gifts; his childhood was also affected by an abnormal sensitivity. At ten he was sent to the School of Jurisprudence at St. Petersburg, where the family lived for some time. His parting from his mother was painful; further, she died when he was 14 - an event that may have stimulated him to compose. At 19 he took a post at the Ministry of Justice, where he remained for four years despite a long joumey to western Europe and increasing involvement in music. In 1863 he entered the Conservatory, also undertaking private teaching. Three years later he moved to Moscow with a professorship of harmony at the new conservatory. Little of his music so far had pleased the conservative musical establishment or the more nationalist group, but his First Symphony had a good public reception when heard in Moscow in 1868.

He had departed from Russia the previous fall on an extended journey that was part working vacation and part mental health break. The trip had begun with a month in the Swiss resort of Clarens on the shores of Lake Geneva. Excursions to Paris, Italy and Vienna followed, but by the spring of 1878, Tchaikovsky was back in Clarens at work on a new piano sonata. The day after his return, he received a visitor from home, the violinist Yosif Kotek, a former student of Tchaikovsky's at the Moscow Conservatory. The composer was intensely fond of the young man, and immediately set aside the sonata to begin work on a violin concerto that could serve the dual purpose of celebrating Kotek's skill while also giving Tchaikovksy an outlet for his feelings. "The Russian composer Tchaikovsky is surely not an ordinary talent, but rather an inflated one, with a genius-obsession without discrimination or taste. Such is also his latest, long and pretentious Violin Concerto. For a while it moves soberly, musically, and not without spirit. But soon vulgarity gains the upper hand, and asserts itself to the end of the first movement. The violin is no longed played; it is beaten black and blue. The Adagio is again on its best behavior, to pacify and to win us. But it soon breaks off to make way for a finale that transfers us to a brutal and wretched jollity of a Russian holiday. We see plainly the savage vulgar faces, we hear curses, we smell vodka... Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto gives us for the first time the hideous notion that there can be music that stinks to the ear."

Pushkin´s “novel in verse” was too diffuse, too literary, too subtly ironic, above all too well loved by every literate Russian to be subjected to the conventions of opera. Yet pondering the idea alone, after the party at which the singer Elizaveta Lavrovskaya had casually mentioned the poem, Tchaikovsky found his imagination kindling. Operatic conventions were what he was wanting to get away from, he told his friend Konstantin Shilovsky on setting him to work on a libretto, and as he explained to his brother Modest. How pleasant to avoid all the routine Pharaohs, Ethiopian princesses, poisonded cups and all the rest of these tales about automata. What poetry there is in Onegin! I am not blind to its faults. I fully realize that it gives little scope for treatment, and will be poor in stage effect, but the richness of the poetry, the humanity and simplicity of the subject, embodied in Pushkin´s inspired verse, will make up for whatever it lacks in other ways. Shilovsky was handed a draft scenario which Tchaikovsky later outlined in a letter to Modest, who had been among the doubters: its closeness to the eventual course of the action, with only minor details varying, shows how unerringly he had, in a single sleepless night, fastened upon the essentials in the poem that was to provide him with his greatest opera.

These same qualities have also perhaps made it harder for some critics and professionals to fully appreciate Tchaikovsky's originality and accomplishments. With Tchaikovsky, his essence is in many ways the idealized fairy tale world of the classic ballet, and this colorful and dramatic spirit pervades much of his music, including the great symphonies. Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky was born to a middle class family in Votkinsk, Russia in 1840. Like Schumann, a composer who had a strong influence on him, Tchaikovsky dutifully studied law before following his true calling by entering the St. Petersburg Conservatory where he studied from 1863 to 1865. Among his teachers was Anton Rubinstein with whom he studied composition. In 1866 he went to Moscow to become the professor of harmony at the new conservatory headed by Nicholas Rubinstein (Anton's brother). In his first two years, he wrote his first symphony (Winter Daydreams) and first opera (Voyevod).
