Queer History billy strayhorn. Although billy strayhorn was considered by many to be Duke Ellington s musical superior, his refusal to stay in http://www.planetout.com/news/history/aahist/strayhorn.html
Extractions: Week in Review Although Billy Strayhorn was considered by many to be Duke Ellington 's musical superior, his refusal to stay in the closet forced him to take a back seat. Central to the jazz movement, Strayhorn infused his compositions with complex harmonies and plenty of soul. His willful obscurity brought him much pain, but it also served to fuel his creativity and boundless talent. Interact: Strayhorn's recently published biography, Lush Life , fills in many gaps left by previous accounts of his life and work. Born in Pittsburgh in 1915, Strayhorn proved his musical prowess early on in life. Soon after graduating high school he composed his first revue: a precocious effort colored in shades of Gershwin. In 1938 he wowed Ellington with a gifted rendition of Ellington's own Sophisticated Lady . Thus began a collaborative friendship and a career mostly overshadowed by Ellington's fame that lasted almost until Strayhorn's untimely death from cancer in 1967. The shy and unassuming Strayhorn paid dearly for being openly gay, but his genius and integrity are an inspiration to this day. Orchestras still perform classics penned by him, like "Chelsea Bridge" and "Take the 'A' Train." And his contemporaries remember him as anyone would want to be remembered: talented, loving, and brave.

Extractions: During his lifetime, William Strayhorn (1915-1967) was generally regarded of as merely the most prodigious of Duke Ellington's small staff of assistants. However, facts that have come to light since the death of both men reveal that Strayhorn was a full musical partner in every way of the greatest bandleader and composer in all American music. Like Ellington, Strayhorn was a rarity in being an equally outstanding orchestrator, songwriter, and composer of both instrumental "miniatures" and extended suites; as a lyricist, Strayhorn considerably surpassed his mentor. Despite Ellington's enormously productive career both before and after his 30-year collaboration with "Swee'Pea" (as Strayhorn was known), it's now commonplace to refer his output as the "Ellington-Strayhorn" catalogue. "He was not, as he was often referred to by many, my alter ego," Ellington wrote several years after Strayhorn's death (following a long illness, exacerbated by drinking and smoking) at the age of 52. "He was my right arm, my left arm, all the eyes in the back of my head, my brainwaves in his head and his in mine." LISTEN [461K RA 3.0]

Extractions: A Biography of Billy Strayhorn T he creative lives of Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington became inextricably linked in 1938, when the two met in Ellington's dressing room after a performance. Duke was getting his hair conked as Strayhorn, a gay pianist and composer of prodigious talent, was introduced. Ellington invited the young man to sit down at the keyboard. David Hajdu brings this scene alive in "Lush Life," his absorbing new biography of Strayhorn. "Strayhorn lowered himself onto the bench with calibrated grace and turned toward Ellington, who was lying still. 'Mr. Ellington, this is the way you played this number in the show,' Strayhorn announced, before masterfully replicating Ellington's performance of 'Sophisticated Lady.' 'Now this is the way I would play it,' Strayhorn said, changing keys and upping the tempo slightly." Ellington hired Strayhorn on the spot, specifying neither the nature of the job nor the compensation. A couple of weeks later, wanting to impress his new boss, Strayhorn wrote "Take the A Train," based on Duke's subway directions to his Harlem home. "A Train" soon become the signature song of the Ellington band, and Strayhorn spent the remaining 30 years of his life working with Ellington and writing a gorgeous body of music as haunting and intimate as any in the 20th century. Yet, while revered as a genius by musicians, Strayhorn has remained largely unknown to the general public. Bart Schneider Bart Schneider is the editor of The Hungry Mind Review.
