He is known chiefly as a symphonist, having written twenty-seven. Miaskovsky and Prokofiev have always been depicted as close friends, which may seem somewhat surprising, considering how much their personalities seemed to differ. Prokofiev was never described as being introspective or morose in nature, whereas with Miaskovsky, both in his music and in the man himself, introspection seemed predominant. Obscure Composers One essay that is especially close to my heart is the one about NikolaiMiaskovski, a personal favourite, written by Eric Schissel. http://homepage.mac.com/ilja/old/Personal/Obscure.html
Extractions: Obscure composers.... Eh?!? Good question. What exactly is an 'obscure composer'? To answer that, we need to define obscurity. Because in classical music, the situation isn't always clear. Take Grieg, for instance. His piano concerto must be one of the most often played of the entire repertoire. But how many other works of his are widely known apart from the music to Ibsen's Peer Gynt? Not much I think. Of course, Grieg is anything but a 'one hit wonder' like, say, Ippolitov-Ivanov (from whom little else is known beside his 'Procession of Sardar' from the 'Caucasian Sketches') or Feruccio Busoni (Piano Concerto). Don't get me wrong, obscurity or fame does not necessarily say much about the intrinsic quality of music. Also, snobbism is a constant threat. Works are not good because they're unknown, but neither are they necessarily without quality because of that. There is, in my opinion, a lot of music that deserves a second (and third, fourth, fifth, etc.) chance; a lot of music that is of great quality but that became unknown for all sorts of reasons. First of all, let me stress that I am NOT the first one to start a page of this kind; it's just that I feel I could add something to the pages that already exist.
