Extractions: a certain frank ... E-Mail to Ata Tak Lukas Ligeti BETA FOLY This CD, the first of the group Beta Foly, is the documentation of a meeting in which the computer encounters the djembè, the balafon, the bolon, and others to create a fusion of contemporary ideas and ancestral traditions, and thus to give birth to the Afro N`Kuman style of Beta Foly. Beta Foly What began as a music workshop and cultural exchange involving African and Western musicians has developed over three years into a band playing exciting new music built on African styles that interact with concepts from other parts of the world and the latest technologies in innovative ways. Quite a few African-Western collaborations take place these days, but no other has produced the results heard on this recording. Amadou Leye M`Baye, Monimba, Lassiné Koné Composer-drummer Lukas Ligeti and his project partner, seminal German new wave musician Kurt Dahlke, brought the latest MIDI equipment and other computerized and electronic gear, as well as Ligeti`s main instrument, the trap drum set, to see what would happen when traditional African musicians began stirring those electronic spices into the cross-cultural musical stew. The Africans were as eager to explore the new territory as Ligeti and Dahlke were to work with traditional artists. Lukas Ligeti The computers and samplers were used to treat sounds and forms in ways not usually associated with world music, and to facilitate polymetric ensemble interplay. But far more than a product of any technology, the music was the result of all participating artists inspiring each other, with Ligeti`s breakthrough approach to polymetric drumming (listen to "L`Escalier du temps","Langage en dessin", and Village dans 8 pays") serving as a catalyst for musical creativity with his West African partners. He tuned into their styles, with intoducing his own compositional approach, which in itself is based on an openness for the most unusual forms of inspiration.

Extractions: Der Plan ...

Greg Goodman/Henry Kaiser/Lukas Ligeti - "Heavy Meta" Greg Goodman/Henry Kaiser/lukas ligeti Heavy Meta (Ecstatic Yod 2002, e 76/fypc22).From Aural Innovations 22 (January 2003). Now here s a tasty trio. http://www.aural-innovations.com/issues/issue22/heavymet.html
Extractions: (Ecstatic Yod 2002, e#76/fypc22) From Aural Innovations #22 (January 2003) Now here's a tasty trio. Henry Kaiser is, of course, one of the kings of free-improv guitar, having explored numerous avant-garde rock stylings over the years. Drummer Lukas Ligeti I know from the excellent Austrian band, Kombinat M, who released a CD on Cuneiform several years ago. And pianist Greg Goodman is new to my ears but has apparently been around for quite some years. The disc opens with the 14 minute "Logical Types" which showcases Goodman's passionate and intense jazz piano. Ligeti provides the rhythmic base while standing out as a voice of his own. And I wouldn't know Kaiser was playing bass on this track if I hadn't noticed it on the CD credits. He plays the instrument like a guitar in a frenetic off-kilter Beefheartian style. "Iron King" is similar but more rock oriented and features Kaiser on the bass again. Rounding out the set is "Tasurim" which is a duo of electric guitar and drums. Kaiser rips it up on his guitar in a rock style that, given the CD cover artwork, is what I assumed the music would be like prior to listening. "Riddled" sees the trio getting into more abstract free-improv territory, though it's fairly standard stuff for the genre. Goodman does the piano strings manipulation thing with interesting results. "The Green Child" is one of the albums more subdued pieces. It communicates a quiet passion and has some interesting ideas, but it didn't really keep me excited throughout its 11 minute length. Finally, "Blind Site" is the most whimsical and fun track of the set. It opens with a play on the "Three Blind Mice" rhyme, and from there it travels through a series of quirky passages that bring to mind a childrens jazz workshop. Nice.

"The most successful was the Saturday afternoon concert by Diane Labrosse (electronics), Martin Ttreault (turntables etc),Xavier Charles (clarinet and electronics) and French duo Kristoff K.Roll (household objects). The five were place on a platform in the middle of the Colise, and the audience was free to walk around and observe the musicians at close range, which de-mystified the process. The improvisation was powerful and atmospheric, dominated by Labrosse's inventive use of samples taken from around her house. Ttreault was drolly inventive, while Charles and K.K.Roll added splashes of colors" Michael Chamberlain, Signal To Noise Already in stock - Bruce will review both this disc and his memory of the actual performance next week.
